The post The best PSVR2 games | Reviewing the best PlayStation VR2 games so far appeared first on GodisaGeek.com.

]]>

We’ve been lucky enough to be spending the last few weeks in virtual reality, and a list of the best PSVR2 games so far have been on our minds. It’s a massive launch, with some interesting titles that could be described more as experiences, lots of older titles that have been updated with features only the PlayStation VR2 can boast, and even some brand new exclusive titles.

This list, while not exhaustive, is based on what we’ve played here at GodisaGeek. There’s some genuine classics on this list of best PSVR2 games already, with two of my personal favourite titles being re-upped for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation VR2, so without further ado, let’s get to the list. Oh and since we know that people love review scores, while these aren’t our traditional full scored reviews, we’ve slapped a score at the end of each game, just to make people happy. Aren’t we nice?

Best PSVR2 games: Moss & Moss: Book II

Moss: Book II Review

While there was nothing “wrong” with Moss or Moss: Book II (grouped together for obvious reasons) to begin with, whether you played on the original PSVR, or Meta Quest, etc, they’ve been given a fresh lick of paint and some extra features that, while not “game-changing”, really add to the overall immersion. For example, the extra fidelity gained from the 4K headset (and be prepared to hear that a lot in this list) really do just make the clarity so much better.

You can lean in and see your little mouse friend Quill up close, and it’s a beautiful game, full stop. Moreover, the haptic feedback is used early and often in the actual headset, so when an eagle swoops over the top of you, it’s felt physically. It might be argued, in fact, the headset vibration is overdone, as it will shake you whenever you let Quill die, but it’s a reminder of a cool feature, and it’s just a lovely game full stop. It may not be Astro Bot, but it’s as close to a VR platformer as we’re getting for now. (Moss 8.5/10, Moss: Book II: 9/10)

Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge – Enhanced Edition

Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy's Edge

Whether you love Star Wars or not, Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge is just a damn good VR game. It’s not the longest (at around four hours), and it may not quite have as much “Jedi stuff” as you’d want, but again, it looks stunning, has fantastic feedback throughout, and even if you aren’t au-fait with the universe, you can be impressed by the attention to detail. Also, it’s a fun shooter with some cool ideas, like the ability to throw out droids that will support you from the air. If it weren’t for the fact that the controls are slightly out of sync with the standardized fare I was used to in VR, it’d be a contender for best launch title. (8/10)

Best PSVR2 games: Horizon Call of the Mountain

As the major first party launch title, you’d expect this to be here. But it’s perhaps on the list for reasons you wouldn’t expect. Truth be told, the use of the new features is a little underwhelming when compared to other games on the list, but the visuals are out of this world. Seeing a Tallneck tower over you in detail, or sneaking around caverns away from Watchers is something you will never quite get used to.

Detail is everywhere, from the character’s faces if you try to break the VR and reach out to them, or the skylines that are as beautiful as they are daunting. The climbing isn’t quite right in this one, and feels as though it’s a bit “baby’s first VR steps”, but with accessibility options galore, it genuinely is an impressive first step into VR for Horizon, and hopefully we get more of this. (Read our full review here)

Puzzling Places

The best PSVR2 games | Ranking and reviewing the best PlayStation VR2 games so far

It may seem an odd choice, but Puzzling Places offers something few of the best PSVR2 launch titles do: a zen moment of calm. Rather than putting the user in peril, this game is about picking a 3D picture and being in the moment, relaxing, and putting together a 3D jigsaw puzzle. Whether it’s a snooker hall or a place out in the wider world somewhere, Puzzling Places is just… nice. Couple this with the fact they add new puzzles each month and you’ve a nice place to relax whenever you need it. It’s simple, but relaxing, and an easy recommendation. (7/10)

Kayak VR: Mirage

The best PSVR2 games | Ranking and reviewing the best PlayStation VR2 games so far

Matching up to Puzzling Places and its feeling of Zen is Kayak VR. A startlingly realistic rendition of Kayaking that matches the reality of being in a small boat out at sea. If you know how to move, it’ll surprise you how well it reacts, and there are even rocks you can physically push off to get moving. With interesting locations, pretty scenery, and weather that can be turned up or down, this is both a good workout if you want it, and a nice serene place to relax. (7/10)

Best PSVR2 games: What the Bat?

What the Bat? review

From the makers of What the Golf? I knew this would be pretty ridiculous. It’s closer to a title like WarioWare than anything else, as you go through increasingly madcap and bizarre mini moments playing as a person with baseball bats for hands. Whether it’s brushing your teeth or trying to play shapes as a baby, you’ll quickly realise having bats for hands is a bad thing, and would make life very hard. I particularly enjoyed the nods to What the Golf? Within What the Bat? Which genuinely made me laugh. While you’ll need a bit of room to move in order to fully appreciate this one, it’s worth it for the laughs alone. (7/10)

Rez Infinite & Tetris Effect: Connected

Rez Infinite & Tetris Effect: Connected

I’ve grouped these together because, quite simply, if you like one you’ll love the other. With the immersive nature of the haptic feedback on the headset, both Rez Infinite and Tetris Effect come to life like never before. With Rez, the PSVR2 controllers will vibrate in time to the music, and after each level the headset will pulse and vibrate as you transition through digital space. Likewise, Tetris Effect reacts to every movement of a Tetromino as you move them faster and faster, all the while the music and environment merging to make a truly magical experience.

Both of these games feel like a reason to play in virtual reality. Both are exquisitely designed, offering replayability, incredible music, and fast, responsive motion. And, of course, both benefit from the 4K nature of the new headset. If you’ve never played them, buy both. If you have, even having experienced them on the previous generation of Sony’s hardware, still buy both. Rez and Tetris Effect are both among the very best PSVR2 games the platform has to offer. (Rez Infinite 10/10, Tetris Effect: Connected 10/10)

So there you have it, after spending so much time in PlayStation VR2 our heads hurt, that’s the best of the bunch that we’ve played so far. Make sure you read our full PlayStation VR2 review, as well as our Horizon Call of the Mountain review, and check out our YouTube Channel to see these games in video format, and this very article with footage of all the lovely games.

Here’s 20 minutes of uncut Metroid Prime Remastered gameplay https://www.godisageek.com/2023/02/heres-20-minutes-of-uncut-metroid-prime-remastered-gameplay/ Thu, 09 Feb 2023 11:00:30 +0000 https://www.godisageek.com/?p=273503 Because February needed another game.

The post Here’s 20 minutes of uncut Metroid Prime Remastered gameplay appeared first on GodisaGeek.com.

Metroid Prime Remastered was shadow dropped at the February 8th, 2023 Nintendo Direct. Imagine that? So we grabbed it, captured some gameplay and decided “No, let’s not talk over this”, and just let the game speak for itself.

With multiple control methods (and invertible look, thankfully) Metroid Prime Remastered looks like it’s going to capture a whole new audience, and please fans of the original 2002 classic. I was a little worried at first, as I couldn’t find the option to invert controls for the look stick, and it wouldn’t be unheard of for a remaster to do that, but it is in there.

If you want, you can use a hybrid method, or use motion controls, while the original GameCube controls are also an option. Visually, as you can see from the video above, it looks pretty good for a “remaster”. I’m early days into the game but the Metroid Prime Remastered fire effects looked particularly impressive based on the opening, alone.

While it wasn’t the Metroid Prime 4 news that fans would have perhaps preferred, this finally puts to bed the fact that Metroid Prime Remastered did exist and was ready to go all along. Prime 4 might be a bit further off, however, as the development was restarted as Nintendo announced Retro Studios was developing it back in January 2019. Given the length of development for triple-A games these days, it’s not really a shock that it hasn’t been shown again since.

The latest game in the Metroid series is Metroid Dread, which we scored 9/10 saying “Metroid Dread is nearly the perfect return for Samus, and only some difficulty spikes rain on the parade. This is a tight, responsive 2D Metroid experience that constantly impresses and surprises in equal measure and is the perfect way to launch the new Switch model”.

Metroid Prime Remastered is out now, priced £34.99 for Nintendo Switch.

Being a console exclusive for PlayStation 5 has allowed Luminous Productions to make Forspoken load times very impressive indeed.

As you can see in the YouTube Short below, Forspoken load times are up there with the likes of Marvel’s Spider-Man and Miles Morales on PS5, with near instant loads from the main menu into your saved game, and then just as quick between fast travel locations. In the video we show you the load time from the main menu into a saved game, then we zip about the map a bit. Just to show it’s not a fluke, we fast-travel to the furthest location we can, and it’s still nearly instant.

Note: it’s better watching this video on a mobile app, as it’s a YouTube Short, designed for watching vertically on a phone, but we’ve embedded it here if you’re on a PC, below. Click here to go right to the video on your phone.

It’s good to see more games making use of the SSD inside the new generation of consoles, for sure, and Mick enjoyed his time with the game, scoring it a 7.5/10 and saying “It’s difficult to recommend Forspoken as a complete experience. Every positive comes with caveats that can’t be ignored. The world is nice to explore, but soon becomes a little repetitive. Combat is exciting until the game drops a damage sponge on you and you spend ten minutes banging your head against it. The story is intriguing but the writing seems hell-bent on forcing emotional responses instead of earning them. There’s something here to get stuck into for fans of open world adventures, and Forspoken isn’t without its charms, but like Frey herself, it’s often its own worst enemy.”.

Forspoken is out on PC and PS5 on January 24th, 2023.

The post Street Fighter 6 gameplay preview | Video of all the fighters so far appeared first on GodisaGeek.com.

]]>

After spending some time playing it, we’ve got a juicy Street Fighter 6 gameplay video to share with you all that features all the fighters so far announced.

Myself and Sean Smith recently went hands-on with the game, and while we didn’t get to see anything story related, or any online modes, etc, we did get a healthy dose of Street Fighter 6 gameplay, and we both came away despite our aging years feeling like youngsters again. We chatted excitedly all the way home, musing how we’d go back and play it again tomorrow: it was just that good.

Anyway, Chris White quizzed me on the game in our Street Fighter 6 gameplay video, which comes off the back of Ken being announced for the game. It’s perhaps no shock to know that he’s in the game, but Capcom have lifted the lid and allowed us to show you footage of Ken, Guile, Kimberly, and Juri: and it just so happen that Ken and Juri were my mains in Street Fighter IV.

I have to say, picking up Ken for the first time, muscle memory kicked in and I was doing combos I remembered from SF4 (or thereabouts). Likewise, Juri’s moveset felt right, and on point. I didn’t dislike SF5, I just didn’t love it like I did 4. What I didn’t expect from the hands-on session, however, was for both of us to come away talking about Kimberly and Luke as potential new mains when the game actually comes out.

Kimberly looks like she’ll take some learning, with plenty of crowd control options, while Luke has a hugely speedy fireball attack that’s tricky to dodge, and wouldn’t feel out of place in a Mortal Kombat title. Anyway, I’m going to blather on like an excited schoolboy enough in the video, so I won’t do it any more here. Go read Sean’s far more technical preview (he knows more about the FG-genre than most will ever know), watch the footage, and join me in sitting here patiently waiting for that final game to come out.

Street Fighter 6 is coming to PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Seres S|X in 2023.

Disney Dreamlight Valley Steam Deck: how does it run? https://www.godisageek.com/2022/09/disney-dreamlight-valley-steam-deck-how-does-it-run/ Tue, 06 Sep 2022 13:00:28 +0000 https://www.godisageek.com/?p=266996 Perfect for Deck?

Disney Dreamlight Valley is an almost perfect fit for Steam Deck. We’ve put together a little YouTube Short to show you just how well it plays and runs.

As always, a YouTube short is best watched on your phone, due to the portrait nature of the video footage. So make sure you subscribe to our YouTube Channel and you’ll see it there, or click the video below via mobile to load it up in the YouTube App. Otherwise, you can just watch below in widescreen, if that’s your bag.

One of the best things about Disney Dreamlight Valley Steam Deck is how the UI is pretty big in the game, so you’re never struggling to see text or icons. The game itself is very similar to Animal Crossing but with loads of quality of life improvements and, well, Disney characters.

It’s not the most taxing of games, despite the colourful aesthetic, and on Steam Deck I was getting an average of 50 frames per second on the “PC High” graphical preset. This has the game running at 864×486 resolution, with Ultra distance quality, VSync on, and “PC Medium” for the shadow resolution. The FPS counter did fluctuate a lot, but it never dipped under 35fps for me. The pick up and play nature means you can grab your Deck and do a few quests or chores, and put it back down, and Cloud Save means you can carry on playing your save on any other platform as well.

For help with the game, we’ve got a load of guides that will solve the tricky puzzles and help you get the most out of your playtime.

Disney Dreamlight Valley is out now in early access via the founders pack, and will be free to play in 2023.

Rollerdrome Steam Deck: How does it run? https://www.godisageek.com/2022/08/rollerdrome-steam-deck-how-does-it-run/ Tue, 16 Aug 2022 13:00:55 +0000 https://www.godisageek.com/?p=266330 Smooth as a verified baby's... you know...

The post Rollerdrome Steam Deck: How does it run? appeared first on GodisaGeek.com.

]]>

As with many big releases lately, the question that came to mind when playing Rollerdrome is “how will it run on Steam Deck”. And no, that’s not because we’re obsessed with playing PC games on the go on Valve’s latest hardware… honest!

In Chris White’s review he called Rollerdrome a game of the year contender, saying: “It’s a departure from OlliOlli, but it still shares that core attraction of replaying every stage until you’ve done everything you can before moving on to the next bit. People, I adore this game”.

While he played his review copy on PS5, I have been playing on Steam, which means I’ve been up to a lot or Rollerdrome Steam Deck playtime. There’s no question it looks better and more vibrant no the PS5, of course, but on Steam Deck Rollerdrome looks and runs great.

Any special features or tweaks?

I didn’t notice any frame drops just playing on the default setting, and the game was outputting a smooth 60fps frame-rate without any tweaking necessary. Moreover, one complaint you might have is that during the FPS sections where you can explore the world and the lore of the game, sometimes you can pick up things like newspapers and notes, causing the text to be small to read. Developer Roll7 has clearly thought of this, however, and reminds you early on in the game that you can zoom in using the Steam button + L1 to zoom in, then the right joystick to move around to the area you want to see magnified. It’s a lovely touch.

Meanwhile the default control scheme works flawlessly, and while the game itself isn’t Deck Verified as of yet, I’d be quite surprised if it wasn’t very quickly, given that, honestly, this is about as good a game as you could play on Deck to not feel as though you’re playing on lower-end hardware compared to the other versions of the game. That said, due to the magnification of text being, perhaps, a little required, it may end up in the “playable” category, rather than the fully “verified” one.

While Lyle has written a full review of Cult of the Lamb, we know there are some who will just want to know how it runs on Steam Deck. Thankfully, while at the time of writing it’s not “Deck Verified“, we suspect that the performance on Steam Deck was so good, it’ll be verified pretty quickly after launch, if not already by the time you’re reading this.

In the video below, we show off the build we’ve been playing of Cult of the Lamb on steam deck, and as you can see, it’s pretty much the same as on a decent PC.

Click here to watch the video on YouTube.

While you can see some frame drops from the 60fps you’d perhaps like to see for a game of this type, we’re pretty sure that’s not the deck that is at fault, as it’s mostly just very short drops, perhaps even frame pacing issues. Otherwise, it’s one of those games you play and forget you’re even using a handheld gaming PC.

In our review of the game, Lyle said: “Cult of the Lamb combines elements of many fantastic and engaging genres, games and franchises to create a compelling experience unlike anything else. The gameplay loop of upgrading your community then switching it up to traipse through a dangerous jungle is sublime, and the way the village provides upgrades for the dungeon crawling and vice versa is just magical. I can’t remember the last time a game held my attention quite so tightly as Cult of the Lamb, so get yourself indoctrinated and give up all your worldly possessions today.”.

Cult of the Lamb is out on PC, Xbox, PS4, PS5, and Nintendo Switch, on August 11th.

While I have written a full review of Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered, we know there are some who will just want to know how it runs on Steam Deck. Thankfully, this is a game that is already “Deck Verified” for Steam Deck out of the game.

In the video link below, we show off the build we’ve been playing of Spider-Man Remastered on steam deck, and as you can see, it’s pretty much the same as on a decent PC, even down to some of the tremendous lighting effects you can get.

Click here to watch the Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered steam deck video on YouTube via mobile.

We’re playing the game on “High” settings overall, with a few smaller effects turned to low, due to the size of the screen making them less visible anyway. As you can see from the frame-rate staying well over 30fps, even on high, there’s room to get a smoother look if you want it. Most of the time the game runs at 40fps easily, but dropping to medium would easily make it even smoother, with a higher frame rate.

In our review of the game, I said: “What you’ve got here is a fully complete, accessible version of Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered that will run on most systems, is at home on the portable Steam Deck, and feels fresh and brilliant even four years after release. Sony is clearly committed to making its PS4 and PS5 games work well on PC, and it’s great to see so many new people able to play a game that most thought would remain exclusive forever. A triumph, then, and one that, despite getting 100% when it first came out, has me hooked enough to consider doing it all over again on PC”.

Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered is out now for PS4 and PS5, with the PC version coming to Steam and Epic Games Store on August 12th.

Launching today, June 9th, Saints Row Boss Factory allows you to jump in to the character creator for the upcoming Saints Row reboot and design your boss ahead of the August 23 release date.

Using an (almost) full suite of creation tools you can build anyone from Doc Holliday to She Hulk, as our video shows, and then upload them to share with others. Available for free on all platforms, Boss Factory allows you to generate a special Share Code to import your created boss cross-platform when the game launches.

While not everything is unlocked, there’s a huge array of features to adjust and tweak, including hairstyles, outfits, tattoos, tanlines, and scars. You can add prosthetics, piercings and wrinkles til your heart’s content. There’s even asymmetrical facial features, meaning you can create even more realistic – or more incredibly disturbing – bosses.

Saints Row Boss FActory

With no limits on gender or skin-tone, and with massively in-depth facial sliders, you could potentially recreate almost anybody. If anything, more hairstyles and beards wouldn’t go amiss – but there are things gated by progression in-game so we’ll see what’s added later.

Saints Row 2022 is a reboot of the irreverent crime series that began as a Grand Theft Auto clone and developed into something much, much more. While the modernisation of such a previously devil-may-care series has given many fans cause for concern, our recent preview had us excited to play more.

Check out our First Look video and if you like what you see you can head over to the official Saints Row website and download Saints Row Boss Factory for free. We can’t wait to see what kind of beauties and freaks you mad lot create with the tools at hand.

Saints Row is developed by Volition and published by Deep Silver, and will be available on PS4, PS5, PC, and the Xbox family on August 23, 2022.

As part of our early preview thoughts on the opening sections of Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes, we’ve put together a little preview video that shows the game in action. There’s very little to worry about, spoilers-wise, as it’s all from the prologue chapter, which is actually available now as a demo from the Nintendo Switch online store.

Like with Fire Emblem: Three Houses, Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes has lots to it. Plenty of deep RPG mechanics to get stuck into, with relationships, and then the musou hack ‘n’ slash combat. It’s taken me by surprise, as you can see in the video.

In the full written preview, I said: “I’m deliberately not talking too much about the plethora of RPG mechanics brought over from Three Houses because I want to be clear about how enamoured I am with the combat alone. It feels like I have a long way to go and a lot to unlock but not once has this game left my mind. I even missed the final day of the cricket because I spent all Sunday morning pushing one chapter deeper. I keep thinking it’ll wear off, or I’ll wake up, but I just keep doing “one more” battle because I want to level someone up, or push the story on, or just hack and slash through enemies.

Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes has stunned me. It’s captured me in a way I never imagined possible, and while I’m not sitting here claiming perfection, I am here to say don’t ignore this because it’s a musou. Maybe I was wrong about the genre or maybe I just never found the musou for me. Maybe everyone has just one musou in them. I have never been happier to have been wrong about a game in my life”.

Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes is out exclusive for Nintendo Switch on June 24th.

We wanted to bring you “first impressions” of some games we may not get to cover fully with reviews on the site or channel, so here’s Mick Fraser taking a look at Source of Madness, available now. This version is the one from Steam, on PC.

“First Look” will often be the first time we’ve ever played a game, but in some cases it might be the first time a specific team member has played the game. We may do it for a bigger game, as an interesting way to see if the eventual review lines up with first look impressions after hours upon hours with a game. Make sure you subscribe to the YouTube Channel so you never miss a video in the series.

Here’s the official description of the game, directly from Steam (currently at £16.99):

Source of Madness is a side-scrolling dark action roguelite set in the Loam Lands, a twisted Lovecraftian inspired world powered by procedural generation and AI machine learning. Take on the role of a new Acolyte as they embark on a nightmarish odyssey. Uncover the cosmic secrets of the Loam Lands and The Tower of Madness, the moon’s mysterious Citadel.

Source of Madness is out now on PC, via Steam.

How and why does one decide the world needs to see God of War PC gameplay? Picture the scene: it’s December, you’re aware that January is going to be cold, dark, and slow. Then you remember God of War is coming to PC, and it’s one of the best games you’ve ever played. Nice.

All told, while there is no new “content” here for returning fans, this is very much one for the PC gamers out there. The PS4 version has been updated to run better on PS5, too. But frankly, this is one of the best games on PlayStation also becoming one of the best games on PC. As with any title, if you hate the genre, it is what it is, but a mixture of storytelling, direction, graphical and audio splendour, brutal yet brilliant combat combine to make for a game that is likely only to be topped by its own sequel. Still brilliant, and a phenomenal PC port to boot.

Have a look at our God of War PC gameplay video above, where Chris Hyde and Adam Cook chat about the title, and what it means for future Sony ports. Also, the video ends up with Adam realising why PS4 ports of PS5 games aren’t going away any time soon.

God of War is coming to PC on January 14th. Check out our full 2022 release date calendar here.

We’ve got over 15 minutes of Rainbow Six Extraction gameplay here for you to enjoy, along with a chat about our thoughts on the game so far.

Adam got to play 3-4 hours of the title in December, and has had plenty of time to think about it. You can read more formal thoughts on his time, of course, but this is a more informal chat. Chris Hyde is hear to quiz Adam on just what exactly this is, and you can listen to that chat while you watch 15 minutes of Rainbow Six Extraction gameplay captured from Adam’s session.

Make sure you check out the video above and give it a thumbs up. Also, subscribe if you haven’t already! After you’ve done that, check out our 2022 release date calendar, so you can plan what you’re buying, and when!

In his full preview, Adam said: “I’ll be there on release day to see if my initial impressions are right or not. It’s been a while since I’ve felt so conflicted about a game like this. It really is a good, almost hardcore-experience with lots of clever ideas. But it needs some tweaking for people to get the most out of it. Because unless we weren’t given all the information we needed before grabbing the mouse and keyboard and taking on the parasitic Archaean alien threat, this one asks a lot and gives very little in kind. ”

Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Extraction is coming to PC, Xbox, PS4, PS5, and Stadia on January 20th. Check out our full 2022 release date calendar here.

With the recent announcement that GRID Legends is releasing February 28 next year, we decided to put together a gameplay video preview for you to enjoy. Chris was fortunate enough to get to experience Codemasters latest. Although a lot of the modes were under lock and key, the thrill of the race was in full show. He headed to new locations such as London and Strada Alpina; drove the Aston Martin Valkyrie Pro Concept; tested out the Race Creator; and dabbled with various disciplines. One thing noticeable straight away was how responsive the controls are. It goes without saying, but if it doesn’t handle well, you may as well give up.

Adam had a chat with Chris White about his times with the preview version of the game, and you can see how gorgeous it looks in the Grid Legends gameplay video, below. For the full written preview in a less conversational manner, head to GodisaGeek.com.

As Chris said in his written preview: GRID Legends is a beautiful game. The six locations I saw across the globe are so different, but they each have striking landmarks and environments. London is authentic, with Big Ben overlooking the track and other familiar buildings adorning the track. Barcelona is sunny and striking; and Strada Alpina is filled with a breath-taking mountain range and gorgeous green fields. The twelve playable cars on offer were meticulously designed and looked stunning as they blazed across the tracks. The Ginetta G40 GT 5 and Porsche 962C were a couple of my favourites, but it’s hard to pick just a few.

GRID Legends is due out on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox on February 28th, 2022.

Bandai Namco and FromSoftware finally showed off some Elden Ring gameplay footage recently, but we’ve also had the chance to play it ourselves. We’ve spent hours exploring The Lands Between, and we’re very happy with what we’ve experienced so far. But we also know that “some gameplay” is never enough, so we’ve put together our video showing off us playing the game.

First up, a note: there is boss fights in this Elden Ring gameplay footage video. The ones shown are optional, and no story critical things are spoiled here. Essentially this is Chris Hyde questioning me about my time with the early parts of the game.

If you have any questions about what you’ve seen, or want to know anything about our hands-on time, leave a comment on the YouTube video and we’ll get back to you. Of course we can’t answer everything about the game as we haven’t played the final version of it, obviously. Also there will be somethings we cannot go into, and we won’t be doing spoilers either.

Make sure you check out our preview, where I say: “I feel feverish writing this, scared to overhype it and yet also that I might somehow not do it justice. I went in with more cynicism than most, expecting “more Souls”. Instead, I am now left trying to find a way to forget about this game for a few months. Because while three months may not seem a long time to most, to me it now feels like an eternity. This will be one of the best games of 2022. If not, I’ll buy and eat a hat.”

Elden Ring is coming to PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S|X on February 25, 2022.

We’ve been playing through the PC demo of Monster Hunter Rise and have brought you a quick comparison video of both versions in motion.

The PC version is the same as the demo we saw on Switch pre-release, but with a smoother framerate and some improved lighting. You still get to tackle the Great Izuchi, Mizutsune and everyone’s favourite pussycat, Magnamalo, as well as take on the training missions to get you acquainted with the basics.

Let us know on Twitter if you’re planning on grabbing the new version or if the Switch version is enough for you. Demo early access provided by publisher.

We also have a massive, all-encompassing Monster Hunter Rise complete guide, so if you’re getting that PC version, that’s a good way to plan things out.

Way back in March we gave the Switch version a 9.5/10 score. Mick had this to say: “Monster Hunter Rise brings enough quality of life improvements that it’s arguably better than World was at launch. A strong line-up of monsters, loads of stuff to grind through, and the series’ highest level of accessibility to date make Rise one of the Switch’s best games and an absolute must-have for series fans.”

Monster Hunter Rise is out now for Nintendo Switch, but is coming to PC in January 2022.

Knockout City season 2 is upon us, and with it, we got a new ball and a new map. We were fortunate enough to be able to see some of Season 2 ahead of time, and get a handle on it. We also got to speak to the developers and ask some questions about it.

In the video below, you can hear myself and Chris Hyde discussing Knockout City Season 2 in detail.

Speaking with one of the studio founders, and the game designer, we got plenty of new info, too. You can read plenty of that in our interview. Here’s a snippet:

“Your strategy for entering that area changes completely based on which movie preview is being displayed. There’s the Siege of Balthazar, the one with the castle, and there’s only certain entry points there, and you can mask your approach because of the high walls. But that’s totally different than say The Pyramid movie, where it’s almost a little King of the Hill as you have someone standing at the top looking down at the entire arena. They’re entirely exposed but they have a great view of everything. Each time one of these movie previews comes up, the strategy of play inside it, and the strategy of how you want to approach is totally different.”

Myself and Chris White have recently had the chance to play through a decent amount of The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles, and we put together a video for you to show off some gameplay. Originally released in 2015 for 3DS, this a game that never made it to the West. It tells the tale of the ancestors of Phoenix Wright. It’s also, I think, a great point to jump in with the series.

I’ve always enjoyed the Phoenix Wright games. But it’s been a while since I’ve had time to sit down with one. This version of the game is coming to PlayStation, PC, and Switch, so there’s lots of ways to play it. We wanted to show off some gameplay in our video preview for The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles, but it’s a hard game to show.

While it’s not just a visual novel, there are lots of moments where you’ll be sat reading text. There are investigations and gameplay elements on top of that, for sure. Anyway, have a look at what we have for you. I’m really enjoying it so far, it’s like a breath of fresh air. It’s silly, fun, and manages both while you’re solving cases involving murder.

I doubt it’ll change your mind if you don’t like this kind of game, but it’s been great playing it so far. We only captured the first case, which is tutorial heavy. So yeah, no spoilers here! Enjoy, and make sure you subscribe.

The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles is out on July 27 for PC, Switch, and PlayStation consoles.

The Falconeer on PS5 just feels right | Hands-on preview https://www.godisageek.com/2021/06/the-falconeer-on-ps5-just-feels-right-hands-on-preview/ Sun, 20 Jun 2021 12:02:27 +0000 https://www.godisageek.com/?p=251928 A rumble in the clouds

The post The Falconeer on PS5 just feels right | Hands-on preview appeared first on GodisaGeek.com.

]]>

The Falconeer on PS5 reminded me how much I enjoyed it when I played it back in November last year. At the time, it was the main first-party release for the Xbox Series X|S. Very little has changed for Microsoft’s next-gen console. We’re still waiting on Halo Infinite, or any big release at all. The Medium is coming to PS5, making it another exclusive releasing elsewhere. The Falconeer is another game flown over to Sony’s shores, and whilst there’s very little difference so far, the DualSense helps to make it feel that little bit different.

Tomas Sala’s creative baby is a beautiful game. It offers the freedom to explore the world of The Great Ursee. The nooks and crannies of a vast ocean; the mysterious caves and water-based towns; and everything in between. Whilst dogfighting is a necessity, there’s still plenty of time for players to see what is on offer. What gives it the edge over its Xbox counterpart is the way it uses the DualSense. Whilst it isn’t revolutionary, firing your canons at enemies packs a punch. Each shot is felt with the press of a trigger, and gliding through the skies is felt in the palm of your hands.

The Falconeer: As beautiful as ever

The Falconeer on PS5 looks incredible. It makes use of 4K and 60fps just as well as other big games. Sala has created a unique world in the waters that players fly over. The light gleams on the waves, and the winds brush through your wings in glorious detail. When entering more dangerous locations, the grey mist and rough waters make manoeuvring difficult to master, but once broken free from the clutches of death, there’s a welcome sense of relief. It might not give players a real reason to buy this on PS5 as well as their Xbox Series X|S (if lucky to own both), but new players are in for a treat.

You spend most of your time drifting between missions and soaking up the sights. When not engaged in combat, there’s a freedom to be embraced. Secrets are everywhere, and it’s encouraged to go and find them. It has some of the best shooting in games within its genre. Keeping track of enemies can be tricky to master, but once you’ve found the sweet spot, it becomes a lot of fun to do. It runs incredibly well on PS5, with load times pleasantly abandoned. In its place is a satisfying journey to the depths of the sea.

The Falconeer on PS5 is a lovely game. Although this is only a preview, it seems as though it’ll be a hit on the console. It will also be coming to PS4, so there’s little reason for anyone to let this pass them by. The combat is tight and exciting. On top of smooth aerial warfare and cathartic travelling, the story is enjoyable too. It also looks wonderful on PS5, giving players little reason to ignore it. When August rolls in, it would be a shame if The Falconeer on PS5 passes you by.

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart uses the PS5’s DualSense Haptics, as you’d imagine. But nothing prepared us for quite how it works. We’ve already had Returnal, which was next-level in how it used the functionality of the new PS5 controller.

But the thing is, how we spotted the Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart DualSense haptics was a little odd. It was during my second playthrough, and I was capturing footage for the site. I popped the controller down on my desk when a cut-scene played out, because you can’t skip them even second time around. Then the scene finished, and the controller was… making music. I actually held it up to my ear thinking something was playing from the speaker. The DualSense speaker is very active in Rift Apart, so I needed to be sure. But no, this was just haptic vibration and feedback.

Putting the mic up against it, you could almost think someone was playing the bass through a small speaker. So I had to show it off, and that’s what this video is. There’s no fancy production here. Nope, just a bit of footage and a phone camera held by my shaky hands. But I think you’ll agree it’s very impressive.

Headphones recommended to catch the full level of vibration!

We’ll have masses of coverage of Rift Apart on the site, as you’d expect and hope. We’ve got guides to certain awkward trophies. There’s a lengthy discussion about the game on our podcast.

The post Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade Intermission gameplay preview appeared first on GodisaGeek.com.

Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade Intermission gameplay is something we haven’t seen too much of since it was announced. Much was made of how the new Intergrade version on PS5 would look better, sure. And of course we also know the performance mode will target 60fps as well. But as for Yuffie and her adventure? Well, we didn’t know too much more than it was coming.

There’s a debate to be had about the pronunciation of Yuffie, too. Apparently it’s supposed to be said out loud as “you-fee”, but… well… no. I’m going to keep saying “Yuffie” because I’m old and that’s how I always heard it back in the day.

Final Fantasy VII Remake was one of the best games when it came out last April, but the new PS5 version sounds great. In the video below, we’ve got some glorious 4K footage of the game in 60fps performance mode. If you were after the details on Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade Intermission gameplay, then this is the video for you.

Back when the game first came out, we gave it a big 9/10. Mick said, “Final Fantasy VII Remake is simply stunning, and a breath-taking masterclass in recreating something beloved for a new – and old – audience”. It was also on PlayStation Plus recently, though that version isn’t getting the free PS5 upgrade. Also, the DLC is a separate purchase, for those who can’t wait to play as Yuffie.

I personally can’t wait to play the game again with a frame rate. Also, I’m hoping they fixed those 2-3 textures that looked really weird. Let us know in the YouTube comments if you’re excited for the game. Oh and don’t forget to subscribe and hit that bell!

The post Biomutant is out now, so here’s an hour of us showing the gameplay appeared first on GodisaGeek.com.

]]>

Biomutant gameplay is something a lot of people will be interested in, we’re hoping. The game is a brand new IP from a brand new developer, and it’s a fairly big undertaking. We’ve reviewed it and also have some handy guides for you if you get stuck early on. But what if you’re just hearing about it for the first time this week? Well, this video is for you.

A few notes, first of all. Firstly, I don’t like the game as much as Mick does (he reviewed it). Secondly, we have a cockup with our audio setup and the mix is wrong, and wasn’t fixable. Sorry about that, but if you want some pretty extensive Biomutant gameplay, this is still gonna do if for you, we think. If you want a more structured video, check out our video review.

In Mick’s review he said Biomutant is “a game that overreaches early, and spends the rest of its run time trying, mostly successfully, to regain its balance.” I think from this video alone you’ll get the impression I agree with that. He also said “It’s lovely to look at and its world is a joy to explore, boots on the ground, but the combat lacks impact and precision, and technical issues mar the experience.” And to be fair, I agree with that, too!

Biomutant is out now for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. This footage was captured on PS5 via backwards compatibility. There’s some hubbub recently about the “next-gen” version of this one, but it ran really well on PS5, but don’t let that stop the internet being angry, right?!

Often we get things in the post, but this Dying Light 2 news / press pack thing was pretty cool, so we thought we’d share it with you. We have all been worried about Dying Light 2 for a while now. But this lengthy black tube we got sent proves there’s info coming soon.

Inside the pack was a torch, but not just any kind of torch – no. This torch is an infa-red one that reveals a few snippets of information about potential Dying Light 2 news. First up, you need to keep an eye on, or follow Techland at Twitch.tv/Techland. Second of all, the date and time.

9pm CEST (8pm UK/3pm USA) on the 27th of May. The last bit of info that’s intriguing is that there seems to be a new tagline. “Stay Human” is plastered all over the materials we were sent.

Anyway, there are also rumours about a re-release of the original game set for that same date as well. It’d make a nice shadow drop while revealing info about the new game. We’d expect them to say something like “We know you all want Dying Light 2 news”, and then show gameplay. But we’d also expect that it won’t be out until much later this year. Mass Effect Legendary Edition is almost out, and for many, hype levels are through the roof. Whilst our review isn’t quite ready, we decided to show off the first hour of gameplay. Featuring new gunplay, 4K visuals, and smooth 60fps gameplay, it’s good to be back. We were very rusty, and couldn’t even remember how to put the gun away at first, and please pretend the accidental grenade throw in the Normandy never happened, k? All is revealed in this Mass Effect gameplay video.

The original Mass effect came out in 2007. It feels like a lifetime ago since being introduced to Shepherd, Wrex, Garrus, and company. However, it didn’t take long until everything came flooding back. After Saren is accused of bringing back an ancient race of machines known as Reapers, the fate of existence is threatened. In the video below, Shepherd is sent to Eden Prime. Firstly, an alien race known as the Geth come to loggerheads with the Normandy. Then, a strange beacon and the death of an ally spark an adventure of a lifetime.

All the big changes coming to Mass Effect Legendary Edition can be found in our Everything We Know article here. Anyway, please enjoy our Mass Effect Legendary Edition gameplay video. This was captured on a PS5 via backwards compatibility.

Scarlet Nexus isn’t out until next month, but fans should be excited. It blends varied combat with futuristic visuals to make a well-designed ARPG. The combat is consistently great, and the ways to upgrade skills have so many different paths. The story is interesting and layered, and the environments and monsters have been superbly designed. A lot of thought has gone into making the various systems user-friendly and diverse. With Brain Points, the SAS system, and upgrades to weapons and everything in between, it feels like this game is going to make a lot of Action-RPG fans happy.

In our preview of the first three hours of Yuito’s story, we said, ” So far, Scarlet Nexus is going to make a lot of players happy. It was a surprise to see just how nicely Scarlett Nexus was coming along. The way the combat feels has the potential to offer hours of gameplay. Paired with the interesting story, Scarlet Nexus is shaping up nicely. We are happy to show you some footage in our Scarlet Nexus video preview. Chris White and Adam Cook chat about how varied the combat is and just how good it looks. You can watch our Scarlet Nexus video preview below:

We recently got the chance to go hands-on with CI GamesSniper Ghost Warrior Contracts 2. If you’ve read the preview and fancy watching footage of the first level, you can watch our Sniper ghost warrior contracts 2 video preview below. Adam Cook and Chris White talk about what’s new in the series. In addition, there’s also a discussion on how the sniper rifle feels to shoot with, enemy AI, and loads more.

Here’s what we had to say in the written preview:

Sniper Ghost Warrior Contracts 2 is a realistic shooter that yearns for patience and skill over incessant firing. Thoughtless attempts will be punished, and mistakes often incur death. It is a rewarding game that feels much different to typical first-person shooters. Like Hitman, contracts can be completed in numerous ways, as can the way in which you reach them. It looks amazing on PC, especially when watching a bullet travel across the map and cut through an enemy’s head. It offers a realistic approach to the genre whilst continuing to build on the great gameplay seen in the previous entry.

With Hitman 3 releasing earlier in the year, replayability is a big deal right now. There’re challenges to complete as well as taking out targets. Each contract can be completed differently, with some shown in the Sniper Ghost Warrior Contracts 2 video preview. In the preview, there were multiple opportunities to replay the level, and each one was thoroughly enjoyable. As a result, it offered rewards for playing over and over. There wasn’t a lot of the game on offer, however, our excitement levels are now through the roof.

Sniper ghost Warrior Contracts 2 releases on June 4 for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S|X, and PC.

Returnal is out on April 30th exclusively for PlayStation 5, and we’re allowed to show you some of the gameplay, with some early thoughts as well.

Clicking the link above will take you to Mick’s preview, where he says:

“Like a multitude of games before it, the latest video game to not only feature death and respawns but to actively weave that theme into its very fabric is Returnal, the new third-person roguelike from Housemarque. The studio isn’t an outfit often associated with third-person action – but they will be after Returnal. Of that, I have no doubt.

Having spent time in its stunning world, as long as it continues like this, it has insane potential. At this early point, the greatest praise I’ll bestow upon Returnal is that I’m utterly enamoured. I’ve only come across a few mini-bosses so far; one was a huge tentacle beast that reminded me of the Mimics in Edge of Tomorrow (perhaps intentionally).

It destroyed me in seconds and made me realise that I need to get much tougher before facing it again. I was hooked in the first 20 minutes. And the moment I turned off the PS5 I wanted to go back.

Returnal is shaping up to be an excellent addition to the PS5’s fledgling library of exclusives. It’s dark and stormy and immensely challenging, but so far it’s also satisfying, intriguing, and incredibly promising.”

Enjoy our Returnal gameplay video, and make sure you subscribe to never miss a video!

Lost Words: Beyond the Page has blown my socks off. Have you ever taken a chance on a game because of a recommendation? Given you’re reading a site where we tell you what we think of games and you base purchase decisions on them, I’m willing to guess the answer is “yes”. Well, running this site gives me precious little time to do something I used to do a lot of, try out games I haven’t heard of, or ones that hadn’t gotten a load of buzz: most games are known quantities these days, even the big ones you are dying to play like a Resident Evil Village, for example, is a game that’ll surely have some story surprises, but gameplay wise, you roughly know what to expect.

But Lost Words: Beyond the Page… err… is something that left me borderline speechless. Watch the video below and you’ll see that in action. It started off slowly, as the game slowly reveals itself, then it shocked me with more mechanics and suddenly changed from what I imagined to be a few hours of a walking simulator with a twist, to… something else. The video ends abruptly because, well, I didn’t want to show any more of it. It’s out now on PC (where I played it), Switch, PS4, Xbox One, and even Google Stadia. Oh and just in case you needed more, it’s written by Rhianna Pratchett. I didn’t know before playing it, and now I want to play more of it even more desperately.

Subscribe to our channel so you don’t miss another video. But for now: get watching, see why I’m blown away, then buy it!

Note from the editors: If you watched the stream earlier, Chris has been told about the miss-naming of the game. He claimed he was listening to a lot of John Mayer beforehand.

In the build up to the release of It Takes Two, Adam Cook and Chris White played a good chunk of the game in a preview hosted by EA. We thought it would be cool to show you just what to expect, and because its so bloody fantastic. For those who may not know, it is the follow up title from Hazelight and Josef Fares, the team behind A Way Out.

In It Takes Two, you play as Cody and May, a married couple on the brink of divorce. After their daughter creates toy models of her parents out of wood and clay, they come to life, and you are navigated through the dangers of their household by a mysterious book named Dr. Hakim. Sound crazy? That’s because it is, but it’s well worth watching our Let’s Play to see if it’s something you’d like to play. This is part one of our series playing the game, and it covers the opening section of It Takes Two. Please be aware that the preview features the game in an unfinished state, so there may be some glitches or bugs.

]]>

The Balan Wonderworld demo is hitting every major console this week, and it’s intended to give people a chance to play Yuji Naka (the guy behind those Sonic games and Square Enix’s brand new IP. It contains some action from the first act as well as a boss fight, and some other chapters, too. I’ve had a chance to play it ahead of the demo release, and Chris Hyde quizzed me about it.

The Balan Wonderworld demo has some good moments and also some things which raised concerns for me, such as the camera, and speed at which you can change between costumes. Most importantly, however, I’d love to know what YOU think of the demo when you get a chance to play it, so hit up those YouTube comments. It’s got a feeling of Sonic Adventure with the whimsical visuals of Nights into Dreams, and I’m dead keen to hear what people think of this one.

Despite some of the concerns I mentioned to Chris in the video, there’s definitely the potential for this game to be good come March, and I want to commend Square-Enix for putting demos out for new IP like this. They’re also doing a demo for Outriders, another new IP that is developed by Bulletstorm’s developer, People Can Fly.

Balan Wonderworld is out on Xbox Series X, S, One, PS4, PS5, PC, and Nintendo Switch this March – the demo is out on January 28th.

The post Assassin’s Creed Valhalla could be the best in the series appeared first on GodisaGeek.com.

]]>

Since Assassin’s Creed reinvented itself with AC: Origins, Ubisoft’s historical open world franchise has become a deeper and more fulfilling experience. It now incorporates loot and leveling up your gear, a satisfying combat system, and a plethora of options to build not only your assassin up, but the army around them. Regardless of these changes, the core feature that has always made the series fun to play is its attention to the history of our world, and the realism in these time periods it portrays. Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla is out in a month, and while it’s sublime to play, it is the attention to detail that really took my breath away.

I recently spent a good seven hours exploring Mercia in the ninth century, meeting historical figures from the times of the Vikings whilst trying to remove a king from his throne so my people could gain a foothold in the region. During this time in British history, England was split into different kingdoms, with Mercia being one of the most powerful in Anglo-Saxon England. If I had been around back then, Mercia would have been my kingdom, given it encompassed much of middle England, including my hometown of Derby. During the Great Heathen Army’s reign in England, much of its Danelaw took over Mercia, with the Vikings using not only their brute strength, but their brains to secure an albeit short future within the kingdom.

Assassin's Creed Valhalla could be the best in the series

During my time with Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla, I travelled through Repton and Tamworth, two places very close to where I live, trying to cement a new king as the leader of Mercia, known as Ceolwulf. As Eivor, I worked alongside three of Ragnar Lothbrok’s sons, Sigurd, Ubba, and Ivar. The attention to detail and of the three sons is superb, however, there is a lot of free reign when it comes to what they looked like and how they acted. Because the vikings were illiterate, much of what we known from these times was taken from a mix of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicles (a document kept by the British to detail their raids and journeys to our land), burial sites and archaeological discoveries, and Sagas: stories written by the likes of historians such as Snorri Sturluson decades later.

Due to having a passion for their history, I was fascinated by how Ubisoft has stuck to their source material and tried to create a living and breathing world that centres around the Norsemen. From the weapons they used to the way they fought, Valhalla provides an authentic experience and a fascinating insight into them. The seven hours I played allowed me to see how the new ration mechanic worked, as well as the new dual-wielding mechanic. Health is replenished by collected food stuffs throughout rural England, and by pressing a direction on the D-pad, you can use this supply of food to fill up your health bar. You can upgrade your supplies so that you can store more food, and this definitely improves your chances as you fight the Saxons and other Viking factions.

Dual-wielding allows you to use a selection of axes, blades, and shields at the same time, and the options in combat makes fighting multiple enemies an engaging and brutal battle. You get to use light and heavy attacks, but well-timed parries opens up the chance to use special attacks, and by holding in the right trigger, you can unleash a selection of special moves that can be changed as you unlock them. One sees you throwing a spear with a rope attached, allowing you to pull enemies closer to you, and another unleashes a flurry of axes into multiple foes in quick succession. Your ranged attacks also have plenty of uses. By holding in the left trigger, you can fire multiple arrows at the same time, or even use you raven to distract enemies as they fly down and peck at their heads.

A screenshot from Assassin's Creed Valhalla

Whilst playing Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla at a previous event, I got a feel for the combat, but this time I already had an idea how it worked, so I was able to mix up the way I fought and got a great sense of how each attacked flowed in tandem with one another. I adore how Raids work in Valhalla. Travelling down the channel in my longboat and picking a settlement to raid is simple enough to do, and once you blow your horn and lead the charge, raiding monasteries to pillage gold and other forms of wealth helps to build your dominance in that area. Leading my men into battle makes you feel like such a badass, but the most fun I had was when I had to penetrate fortresses and castles. These are much bigger battles, and the amount of enemies you face is staggering. They feel like mini wars. Hundreds of arrows fly through the air, warriors are fighting all around you, and bloodshed is frequent.

The familiar stealth elements are still there, but fighting face on is by far the best thing about fighting in Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla. I also got to see other mini-games this time around, like taking part in a ninth century rap battle to build by charisma. Rhyming with wordsmiths and beating them means that when it comes to bartering or talking to NPCs later in the game, you’ll likely be more successful in getting what you want. I also made a huge effort to find all the treasures within Ledecestrescire (or Leicestershire), and that involved solving environmental puzzles to find everything. These include finding actual treasure as well as Book’s of Knowledge, which unlock new skills for you to assign to the two trigger buttons.

Assassin's Creed Valhalla preview

Visually, Assassin’s Creed is stunning. Travelling across the vast landscape of Mercia saw me appreciate the natural wildlife, the green fields and farmlands, and the rivers. The towns and villages are filled with huge towers and buildings ripe with materials to loot, helping to upgrade your gear in a multitude of ways. The fortresses are huge structures packed to the rafters with soldiers, but there are also plenty of hiding places and high walls to unleash some inventive attacks, such as the one found in Templeborough. The character animations are also fantastic, and the voice acting accompanying them make everyone you interactive an interesting ally or fearsome enemy. Ivar Ragnarsson is notorious for being a sadistic warrior, and from the moment you encounter him torturing a Saxon in Repton, it’s clear Ubisoft know their stuff.

Being allowed to be let loose in Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla gave me the opportunity to get a feel for the flow of the game. I completed a story arc, but I also got to see everything else on offer. Roaming the map and finding treasures, to getting into fights and exploring every nook and cranny opened my eyes to just how big this game is going to be. I’d barely scratched the surface after seven hours of play, but I managed to formulate the opinion that Ubisoft’s latest entry into the Assassin’s Creed franchise was dense yet thrilling, providing plenty of variety in its combat, and a world ripe with adventure.

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is out on November 10th for Xbox One, Xbox Series X, PS4 & PC, and on November 12th for PS5 in North America, with a November 19th PS5 release in Europe.

Yakuza: Like a Dragon is comfortably one of the best games of 2020 https://www.godisageek.com/2020/10/yakuza-like-a-dragon-is-one-of-the-best-games-of-2020/ Mon, 12 Oct 2020 13:00:27 +0000 https://www.godisageek.com/?p=242666 Baby what've you done to your hair?

The post Yakuza: Like a Dragon is comfortably one of the best games of 2020 appeared first on GodisaGeek.com.

]]>

It’s difficult to talk about Yakuza: Like a Dragon without sounding like a fanboy about it, breathless and excited, unable to form full sentences because of how it left me feeling. But I have played a lot of Yakuza over the years, so to establish some calm I’m going to tell a story about a single experience I’ve had playing Like a Dragon, with no opinions, pure objectivity: these are the facts; this is what happened.

Like many open-world games, when previewing them, it’s tricky to know what to do. Do you mainline the story, or try to engage in the place instead, and see what it can offer. I usually try both, and after completing a mission I saw a gentlemen being accosted for baby formula down an ally. Being part of the “hero” program, I decided to help him out and beat the bad guys up using the turn-based combat (which we’ll come to), before chatting to him.

It turns out he’s a new father who is working all the hours God sends to make a better life for his family, only he’s having marital problems and they barely talk at all. His wife is snappy and cold to him, and he doesn’t understand why. As the main protagonist, Ichiban Kasuga, I decide to tell him that maybe she’s struggling more than he knows, maybe him being away all the time isn’t a good thing. I should add, this heart-to-heart chat takes place after a fight where my friend blew some kind of fire out of his mouth to defeat an enemy. We chat further and then a baby screams from a window above, and our talk has spurred him on: he wants to be a better father, not a harder worker.

Yakuza 7: Like a Dragon preview

His job is to fetch hot towels, mine to get warm water, so I run off to a cafe and get it, and I come to meet him outside again. We go in, and the babies crying… aren’t babies. They are adult Yakuza men in nappies rolling around, playing at being babies. The aggressors outside the building wanted their formula for the boss-man, as they like formula, because they’re babies, after all.

Paraphilic infantilism aside, these are Yakuza and they aren’t happy that Kasuga-San has burst into their fun time. A fight ensues, and I win, and as they pant on the floor, defeated, my new-father-friend and I explain the whole silly mix-up. Then, while still in nappies, the Yakuza boss delivers a heartfelt speech about how his wife must be struggling, as she has to look after the baby all day while he’s at work. New-Dad realises he’s in the wrong, and that his wife is exhausted, and he needs to work less and talk more. Again, they’re in nappies doing this.

Then the Yakuza boss decides he likes us and he adds himself to our Pound Mates options (he’s basically an ability you can summon in battle now for a price), and we celebrate by drinking baby formula together, before the camera fades to black, strongly suggesting Kasuga-San is forced into some phsychosexual infantilism play along with his new Yakuza mates.

A screenshot from Yakuza: Like a Dragon

And that’s a side mission. An entirely optional side-story you can miss entirely, or ignore. Or in other words: Yakuza: Like a Dragon is completely insane, and unequivocally brilliant. It takes the formula of the beloved series that’s finally found an audience in the West and adds turn-based combat that’s the closest to Final Fantasy VII I’ve played since Lost Odyssey hit Xbox 360, ramps it up to eleven, and runs with it.

The world itself has been well-trod, but it feels better looking than ever, and the facial animations have been taken up a notch too. But the truth is, you’ve likely seen tens of trailers and, let’s face it, the game has been out in Japan for over a year, so there’s footage out there. What I wasn’t prepared for is how deep the combat system and RPG-nature is. In Chapter 5 you unlock the ability to change jobs, and while that’s a simple narrative cover for the madness of the system, it works and is believable. I changed Kasuga from “Hero” class to “Chef” which meant I fought with oversized ladles and could now use fire attacks whereas my previous class was more baseball bat and ask questions later.

I turned Adachi-San into a construction worker, so he could absolutely batter folks with a huge mallet, Saeko I switched to an Idol so she could be more of a mage, or support, and best till last, I switched Nanba into a musician, which gave me a laugh out loud moment as I used his skill “We are the world”, whipped out a guitar and sang his enemies into submission. For clarity sake, his songs are buffs and debuffs, but all the while he’s dressed like someone from the Summer of Love. All the jobs have different outfits to pick from, and of course there’s items galore to help you in battle.

Yakuza: Like a Dragon preview | Comfortably one of the best games of 2020 - Namba musician

At first the combat is a little easy, but I can see it’s going to get harder, and there seems to be space for more characters to join the party. The summons are insane, some of the skills have long animations but I didn’t tire of them, and you can even add skills to the D-Pad to enact them quickly without using the menus. Battles aren’t random, and you gain XP for your overall level as well as your equipped job level. My hope is later on you can change jobs without visiting a location, but there are other things you can do that I won’t spoil here that do require turning in on location, so I’m not sure there.

On the subject of little issues, it’s not “fully” voiced in that way that a lot of JRPGs aren’t, meaning some conversations will be punctuated with “hmm” and “yeah”, but honestly, the amount of dialogue combined with dual audio means I can absolutely forgive that. The only other complaint I can find (and I’m reaching here a bit) is that your party is visible on screen in the open world, and has collision detection, meaning you run into each other a bit.

Yakuza: Like a Dragon feels like it was made for me. There’s systems here that involve relationships, there are shops, upgrades, skills, jobs: it’s a full-on JRPG in a Yakuza skin, with a thoroughly enjoyable turn-based combat system. There’s a million and one things I could talk about here that I’ll save for nearer release, but there’s absolutely no doubt in my mind that Yakuza: Like a Dragon is one of the best games of 2020. On the outside it may look different, but it shares the same heart, warmth, and humour that the series is so loved for. It’s endlessly engaging, but crucially feels modern in how it plays. It’s just brilliant, and despite promising myself not to get breathless about it, here we are… it’s just that good.

I played an alpha build of Tainted Grail, a grimdark RPG from Awaken Realms, based on the boardgame of the same name that was the most successful kickstarter campaign of 2018. In this dark wreimagining of ancient Britain, King Arthur is lost, the Knights of the Round Table are scattered or dad, and the land of Avalon is falling to ruin at the mercy of the Wyrd, a dark cloud of evil and madness covering the land. The nights are long and dark, crops don’t grow and everyone who comes into contact with the Wyrd goes insane. Only the power of the Guardian Menhirs, ancient edificies erected by the legendary wizard Merlin, hold the growing tide of darkness at bay.

With no more heroes left to fight, it falls to a handful of untrained souls to band together and save the land. It combines Baldur’s Gate style exploration and player choice with deck-building combat, and its dark, unforgiving world oozes with atmosphere. There’s no concrete release date yet, but this is an early build and there’s lots more info and additions to come. As it stands, Tainted Grail has heaps of potential and could be a surprise hit for Awaken Realms.

This early build has only two characters, the burly smith Beor denied his place with the heroes due to a mysterious wound, and Ailei, an outcast apothecary shunned by the townsfolk of Cuanacht. At present both characters are identical in all but appearance, though we can expect greater variety in characters, gear, cards and tactics when the full game finally comes to Steam later on in the year.

In the meantime, check out the video preview below to get a peek at the world-building, combat and gameplay on offer:

Tainted Grail will be available on Steam some time in 2020.

All in all, 2019 has been a bit of a weird one. We saw Anthem flop and Ghost Recon nosedive, we saw people denied prize money they deserved for airing a political opinion, Ninja abandoned Twitch, a prominent YouTuber got banned for cheating at Fortnite, and one of the years most popular games was about a goose. Fortnite got lightsabers, Fallout 76 got a subscription model, Google Stadia became a thing, sort of. EA not only released a good Star Wars game, but they also released a single player game without microtransactions or a season pass. Halo: Reach is back in the wild, Hideo Kojima managed to somehow simultaneously unite and divide the entire games industry with Death Stranding, and thank god for Keanu Reeves. In fact, if there’s one thing 2019 has done for us, it’s make us all really look forward to 2020. Which is as good a segue as any to introduce our five most anticipated titles due next year.

5: Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Top 5 most wanted 2020

If 2019 taught us anything it’s that we could all use an escape now and then, and the Animal Crossing series has always provided a great alternative to dealing with our actual lives for a few hours a time. Animal Crossing New Leaf was a favourite here at GodisaGeek, and next year’s New Horizons is set to take the franchise to places its never been.

Good old Tom Nook is back with a brand new venture: his Deserted Island Getaway Package that will see you setting up a brand new home on a beautiful paradise island. Life management will be taken to a new level, with the ability to craft tools and furniture to outfit your home and island and make paradise your own. You’ll even be able to jump in and play with up to three other players on a given island – and we can’t wait to start living our best life in 2020.

4: Dying Light 2

Top 5 most wanted 2020

No one expected much from Dying Light when it was first announced. It looked like more Dead Island but with Mirror’s Edge style free-running and frankly, no one thought Techland could pull it off. Then it hit the world and, Holy cow, established itself as one of the best zombie apocalypse games available. Fast-paced, huge and engaging, with a decent story and a superb expansion in The Following, Dying Light is a staff favourite here. Also, let’s not forget the cathartic fun of drop-kicking zombies right up the chuff.

But what has us most excited for Dying Light isn’t just returning to that world, but the fact that we’re promised almost unprecedented control over what happens in it. Techland’s hugely ambitious sequel will be shaped by the player’s actions or inactions, rewarding you with new areas or punishing you with the deaths of NPCs you failed to save, tougher challenges or darker outcomes. It won’t just be about survival, but about shaping a world worth surviving in.

3: Final Fantasy 7 Remake

Top 5 most wanted 2020

For a handful of us at GodisaGeek, yours truly included, Final Fantasy VII was one of the first truly impactful games we played. As Cloud Strife, troubled resistance fighter and Big-haired broodmeister, we faced countless challenges, battled our nemesis, Sephiroth, loved, lost, avenged, raced chocobos… We fought down enemies the size of buildings and built a team of iconic heroes to save the world of Midgar.

Next year sees Square-Enix’s massive remake finally hitting machines, and we simply can’t wait. The revamped battle system has fans somewhat divided, but everyone can agree it looks phenomenal. It’s not the only remake due next year (thank you, Capcom), but it’s been talked about and shown off so long that we’re practically frenzied for it.

2: Cyberpunk 2077

Top 5 most wanted 2020

We were already fully onboard with Cyberpunk 2077 before Keanu took to the stage at E3 this year and announced his major role in the game. CDProjektRed are responsible for one of the generation’s greatest RPGs and we can’t wait to get our hands on their latest venture.

Set in a future world where you can be anything you want for a price, 2077 promises a living world like you’ve never seen before. If you’ve ever wanted to live out a Blade Runner / Deus Ex fantasy, this is the one for you. From cybernetic augmentations to memory implants and advanced hacking, you’ll employ a ton of tricks and skills alongside the first person shooting, driving and action to stay alive in 2077’s neon dystopia.

1: The Last of Us Part II

The Last of Us was always going to be a hard act to follow, but if anyone can top Naughty Dog, it’s Naughty Dog. But imagine having to deliver something as emotionally charged, well-paced, challenging and surprising as 2013’s The Last of Us. The chemistry between protagonists Joel and Ellie was surely lightning in a bottle, as was the incredible atmosphere and immersion that held fast despite the unapologetic gameyness of some of its systems… There’s a reason, well, lots of reasons, why for many people TLOU is the best game of the decade.

Next year brings a sequel many were sure they didn’t want until. It was announced, a further exploration of Ellie and Joel’s relationship, several years after the harrowing events of the last game, introducing new characters and relationships, new enemies and challenges to overcome. Naughty Dog simply don’t make bad games, they don’t even make “good” games; they repeatedly produce masterclasses in how to fuse storytelling with gameplay, character building with epic set-pieces, and the very thought of returning to their bleak, post-apocalyptic world has us practically drooling in anticipation.

The Cycle is the new PC-exclusive (for now, I’m guessing) “PvEvP FPS Quest Shooter” developed and published by Yager Development. It looks and feels like Fortnite but with a very different set-up. For one, it’s not a Battle Royale, but a 20-minute race to complete contracts and gather resources in the short windows between cycles of planet-wracking storms.

You play a Prospector, a gun for hire who must use these windows to earn as much money as possible for your chosen faction by making and breaking pacts with other players, facing down hideous alien wildlife and braving the storm. It has a similar free-to-play model to Epic’s big-hitters, Fortnite and Dauntless, while the premise has a decidedly Borderlands-y feel.

I’ve been playing it a lot this week, and wanted to bring you a brief impressions video ahead of more coverage in the future. Check it out below.

Update: The video (and original post) erroneously reported that The Cycle is published by Epic Games, when in fact it is developed and published by Yager Development. Apologies for the misinformation.

The post The 5 Apple Arcade games you need to try right now: Part One appeared first on GodisaGeek.com.

Apple Arcade has been available to all now for a few weeks, and at 4.99 a month you’ve got access to a lot of fantastic games. Apple has approached its video game subscription model in a way that should be making Google Stadia people take notice, because with the ability to pair either your Xbox One or PS4 DualShock 4 controller to your iPhone, iPad, or even the supported Apple TV models, it’s just a complete home run.

But while we’ve already reviewed the likes of Sayonara Wild Hearts and Overland, we wanted to bring you 5 of the best games to try so far. Bare in mind there are plenty of others we’ve not mentioned like Assemble with Care (which really requires a touch screen to show you how good it looks and sounds), and there are larger experiences such as the Zelda-like Oceanhorn 2 and even Capcom’s Shinsekai Into the Depths that delivers a metroidvania experience underwater, but we just haven’t had time to delve into those ones yet to give a full recommendation. For now, this is part one of the 5 Apple Arcade games you should try right away.

What the Golf?

What the Golf?

A divisive sport, and one many people call a good walk ruined, but What the Golf? Isn’t exactly Tiger Woods PGA Tour. Without spoiling it too much, this is a game that pokes fun at the sport and itself, with some cheeky japes. It’s got a cheery soundtrack and is easy to pick up and play a few levels thanks to the intuitive controls whether on a touch screen or using a controller. What the Golf? Even goes so far as to include boss fights that are akin to lite-versions of something you’d find in Undertale. It’s a joy to play and never stops surprising you.

The Pinball Wizard

The Pinball Wizard on Apple Arcade

While it’s unlikely we’ll be seeing developer Frosty Pop add The Who’s classic song to the game, Pinball Wizard doesn’t need it. This is a pinball game with a difference, even adding some RPG mechanics where you can unlock skills. Every time you play you start at the bottom and you have to bounce your wizard around, defeating enemies and collecting loot as you go. Handy barrels offer the chance to heal or get mana back quickly, and while it’s challenging it’s another accessible game that is well worth playing.

Skate City

Skate City on Apple Arcade

From the minds of the people who brought us the chilled out skiing game Alto’s Adventure, we’ve got Skate City which is… equally chilled out, actually. It’s simplicity is the key here, as you push off and skate with the cross button, and flick either of the sticks to do all manner of tricks. You can just pick up and play for as long as you want in the endless skate mode, or you can attempt to do challenges and progress along the career mode, which unlocks new places to skate. While it’s not as technical as something like OlliOlli, it’s not meant to be, and if you like a chilled out game with a good soundtrack, Skate City is the one for you.

Hot Lava

Hot Lava by Klei Entertainment

At this point, all I should need to say is that this game is by Klei Entertainment. Yes, the makers of the phenomenal Mark of the Ninja and hugely popular survival game, Don’t Starve. Oh, they also made Invisible Inc, and Shank – there’s some unreal pedigree here. Hot Lava take the age old childlike wonder that is “what if the floor was made of Lava?” and turns it into a first-person runner akin to Mirror’s Edge. With loads of levels, collectibles, and a multiplayer baked into the game, this one is a huge surprise. We’d like the frame rate to be a little better on Apple TV given the power inside iOS devices these days, but Hot Lava is different to most of the games on Apple Arcade right now, and definitely worth a go.

Grindstone

Grindstone by Capy Games

Speaking of developer pedigree, I’ve saved the best for last in Capy Games’ Grindstone. This game is one of the best examples of Apple Arcade giving developers free reign to produce something special. In another life, Grindstone would be filled with microtransactions, but the subscription model for Apple Arcade means that developers do not have to think of ways to monetize their game: it’s purely about the fun.

Another game that fits the “easy to understand, difficult to master” mantra, Grindstone is about taking your avatar and murdering creeps of the same colour. As you play you’ll discover multiple new ways to upgrade and become stronger. But the key to every level is chaining kills together to make big grindstones appear. Running through a grindstone allows you to change colour mid-flow, so you can get even bigger combos before you kill bosses, get the key to the treasure chest, and get out alive. It’s absolutely fantastic and hugely addictive, and the pick of all the games I’ve played so far.

Got any I haven’t mentioned? Tell us in the comments below what your favourite games from Apple Arcade are so far, and hit the subscribe button, and the bell, so you don’t miss part two of our list… when we I can pull myself away from Grindstone long enough to write it. Thanks for reading (and watching)!

The post Code Vein boss guide: The Butterfly of Delirium appeared first on GodisaGeek.com.

]]>

The Ruined City Centre is behind you and you’re now face to face with the poison loving Butterfly of Delirium.

You’ll likely have a tougher time with The Butterfly as she is much faster than Oliver and every attack builds your poison meter.

Before you start you’ll either want to stock up on poison resistant and reducing items. Or, unlock the Venom Resistance and Venom Removal gifts from the Mercury Blood Code you get from Coco at Home Base.

Also, make sure to bring Yakumo along with you as he’s best suited for this fight.

Once your stocked up or have inherited/equipped the particular gifts you’re good to go.

There’s a fair few moves from The Butterfly, some of which will cause frustration, with all them building or causing poison.

The most common attacks you’ll come across are:

 • A swinging tail attack, followed by a tail lunge attack
 • A double tail swing. Essentially the tail swings at you in one direction then right back at you again the opposite way.
 • A single tail swipe. Pretty self explanatory.
 • A tail pursuit move. The tail will appear in front of The Butterfly and the next thing you’ll see is the tail making a fast snaking motion towards you. This can be easily dodged by diving in the opposite direction.
 • A.o.E poion blast – The Butterfly will wrap her wings around herself for a few seconds and this is your queue to get the Hell out of dodge. Once those few seconds are up she will release a poisonous A.o.E blast that knocks you back and fills your poison meter. There’s a poison cloud that hangs about for a few seconds and while it doesn’t do damage it will quickly build up the poison meter.

After you get about a quarter of health knocked out The Butterfly will collapse to the ground for a few seconds. You can use this time to get a few hits in or, preferably, heal up and sort any poison effect or build up.

Once The Butterfly is back in the air, the stronger attacks become more frequent. You can now expect to see more of these:

 • A poison mist spray attack – You will see The Butterfly’s tail appear above her for a couple of seconds which then proceeds to spray a poisonous mist. The mist causes damage and quickly builds your poison meter so it’s best to hang back and let it play out. The attack lasts for a few seconds so it’s best to use this time to heal up and sort any status effects.
 • Poison orb attack. If you’re too far away for any melee attacks The Butterfly will decide to lob 5 poisonous orbs your way. The orbs fan out and eventually drop to the ground. They’re easy enough to dodge but if you aren’t confident in your dodge abilities keep hammering the dodge button to move backwards to take you out of range.
 • There is another poisonous orb move where the Butterfly will spin and send out a host of poisonous orbs in random waves. If she does start to spin the best thing to do is dodge backwards and wait for the spinning to stop. The A.o.E isn’t too large so you should be able to get out of range quickly and use the time to heal up.
 • The last move involves a homing poisonous orb. When down to around the last third of health the tail will shoot out a homing poisonous orb, almost always intended for your character. It moves at a decent speed but the best thing to do is keep dodging until it disappears. It doesn’t do too much damage but it will build the poison meter fast. The best thing to do is keep dodging.
The Strategy!

That’s enough scene setting, onto the main reason why you’re here: a strategy!

The Butterfly is adverse to fire and there are good few items and gifts that can help you with this fight.

You can pick up an item from Coco back at Home Base that adds flame damage to your equipped weapon that will do a decent amount of extra damage. Alternatively you can learn the Flame Weapon gift from Louis’ Blood Code to save having to spend any Haze. The Flaming Weapon gift does need to be unlocked with Prometheus Vestige I. There is also the Fire Storm gift, also from Louis’ Blood Code, that shoots a series of flaming projectiles and can also stagger the enemy. Fire Storm is also low in ichor cost and doesn’t take long to recharge.

This fight is best fought at range as the melee attacks from The Butterfly are fast and devastating when coupled with being poisoned. A melee fight can be won but it’ll be a hard fought battle if you can’t get the poison under control and those dodges timed perfectly.

As mentioned before, Yakumo is best suited for this fight and also best suited for doing most of the major lifting. If you’re looking for a relatively easy win then I’d suggest keeping your distance and sending a barrage of ranged attacks, flame based if possible, and let Yakumo get up close and personal.

If you can keep your distance and your health and poison meter under control it shouldn’t take long before you end the Butterfly.

However, if you’re more a melee style fighter you’ll want to make sure that you’re dodging reflexes are up to scratch. There are plenty of Lost to practice on if you’re not totally comfortable with dodging yet.

For a melee approach you’ll want to try and stay as close as possible as the tail will sometimes miss when The Butterfly takes a swing, without the need to dodge. This gives you a precious second or two to get some hits in.

Be warned though, the closer you stay the more likely it is you’ll be seeing the A.o.E attacks appear so you’ll need to keep an eye out for those cues and make sure you keep enough stamina to get out there fast.

Keep yourself stocked up with items to add flame damage to your weapon or enough items to replenish your ichor to use the Flaming Weapon gift and before long you’ll have dealt the finishing blow and The Butterfly will be no more.

Congratulations again! You’ve now doubled the amount of bosses defeated and it won’t be long until you’re face to face with the Insatiable Despot

The post Code Vein Boss Guide: Oliver Collins appeared first on GodisaGeek.com.

Welcome to a new guide series where we’ll be looking at the Code Vein bosses.

We’ll detail the move set, weaknesses and strategies that worked for us and will hopefully help you too. First up is none other than the boss with no doubt the most threatening name on this list: Oliver Collins.

Make sure you subscribe to our channel so you don’t miss the next guides, too. But here we are, let’s go with how to beat Code Vein’s Oliver Collins!

You’ll come across Oliver at the end of your journey through the City Underground when you manage to get back to the surface. You won’t be alone in this fight though as your new pal Louis, called the Stranger at this point, will be by your side.

As Oliver is the first boss you can expect that he’ll be on the tame side compared with other major bosses.

Oliver starts this fight with a warhammer and a few set moves:

 • A slow vertical swing,
 • An even slower overhead slam,
 • A vertical swing leading into an overhead slam,
 • And a charging leading into a jump and an overhead slam

His moves are strong but extremely slow, so timing dodges should be a piece of cake.

Around the halfway mark Oliver will double over and transform into a large Lost/Big Oliver. Be careful when this happens as an A.o.E blast couples with this transformation that will take off a decent amount of health if you’re too close.

We now enter the second half of this fight and while Oliver is now huge and more powerful, he’s just as slow.

Big Oliver has similar attacks but now has an additional A.o.E attack. His attacks now consist of;

 • A triple overhead slam – each swing takes a while to bring down so dodging is easy enough,
 • A double vertical swing leading into overhead slam – again these swings are slow so dodging shouldn’t be a problem
 • A horizontal swing leading into an overhead slam where he turns 180° – if you’re hacking away at his back be careful to take note of this swing as it will catch you out if you aren’t paying attention,
 • Big Oliver now has an A.o.E blast. He will hold his arm in the air bringing his hand into a fist producing a red glow which releases into a blast. This takes just a few seconds so you need to react quickly.

Oliver is easy enough to take down regardless of your combat choice. There should be no issue dodging his attacks as he is much slower than any of the Lost you’ll have fought against in the underground. If melee is your style it’s a simple case of dodge, get a few hits in, dodge back to get some distance, rinse and repeat.

Oliver is the best boss to test out any ranged strategies on. As he doesn’t have any sort of transportation type moves it’s easy enough to keep your distance and practice some long ranged attacks/magic. Louis will keep him busy as he is melee based, so Oliver should focus most of his attention on him while you get some practice in. If Oliver does divert his gaze to you, your character should be fast enough to put some distance between you both and you can carry on dishing out some ranged damage.

Congratulations, you have defeated your first, of many, Code Vein bosses. Onwards to boss number 2: The Butterfly of Delirium.

The post 5 things to like about Ghost Recon Breakpoint | The Breakpoint positives appeared first on GodisaGeek.com.

]]>

I like Ghost Recon Breakpoint. It has its issues, sure. I’m not going to pretend the storefront isn’t just a little bit obscene, or that the AI isn’t dumber than a bag of bricks at times. I’m not going to pretend it’s not janky in places, or that the writing isn’t some of the cheesiest I’ve seen in recent years. But I’m also not going to pretend I haven’t had a blast playing it. There’s plenty wrong with it, but in the interest of trying to celebrate the positives in Breakpoint, here are five things I actually like.

The Solitude

5 things we like about Ghost Recon: Breakpoint

I know I’m talking about solitude in a game that’s supposed to be about the squad, marking and executing orders, etc, but just as I enjoyed the sense of being a lone wolf while exoloring the carcass of Washington DC in The Division 2, I’m also enjoying picking my way through the jungles of Auroa. Playing with others is fun, and the multiplayer is a passable distraction, but for me the meat is creeping around the underbrush, camp on my face purely for role-playing purposes, scouting enemy placements and then sniping them one by one.

It might be nothing, literally nothing, we haven’t done in tons of games before, but it still feels good to have the tactical high ground and only have yourself to rely on. If it goes pear-shaped it’s on you, and it’s up to you to dig yourself out of the shit. The atmosphere might go to pot in the unnecessary social hub, but out in the world it’s just me, my guns and the enemies in our way.

The Sunsets

Just imagine it. Feet in the sand, breeze in your hair, the auburn glow of a perfect sunset caressing the landscape like silk, as you relax, breathe in, and squeeze the trigger on your rifle, and send a high velocity round clean through the brain pan of a scumbag mercenary hostage-taker a few hundred yards away.

Character animations can be a little janky outside of cutscenes, but those sunsets – and sunrises, actually – sure are damn pretty.

Exploring the World

To be fair, the world itself is fairly impressive. You can label it generic if you like – I mean, it’s not all that different to Far Cry 5’s Montana – but there are some truly beautiful views to savour. Not to mention that there’s alway something off the path, maybe a cave where Jonny Mercenary stashes his collection of antique boxes and, for some reason, little box of syringes. Maybe a hole in the ground with a chest in which someone has seen fit to store a pair of perfectly good military-issue boots.

There are little cabins in the woods, waterfalls and snowy mountaintops to parachute off. There are side paths and vantage points and ancient ruins, and all manner of ways to get yourself into and out of trouble. Just watch that Azrael Drone: if it spots you, it will unleash a couple of nigh-unkillable murderbots to punish you for being you. If you see it, hide.

The Sniping

I like sniping in games. Well, in PvE games, anyway, when I can take my time. I like scoping out a base, marking targets. I like orchestrated mayhem. When a game implements this correctly, it can be exceptional. Now, Ubisoft can do this. We know they can, we’ve seen them do it in Far Cry, wherein you can set up a distraction, maybe free a couple of caged animals, pop a few oil drums, and then pick the enemy apart in the ensuing chaos.

Breakpoint doesn’t do this as well, and the main reason is that the AI is literally too stupid to be funnelled or manipulated into a specific situation that makes planning worth it. In Breakpoint, the enemy has one and only one strategy: to pick their way directly towards you from cover to cover, allowing you to line up headshot after headshot like ducks in a gallery. Sounds boring, maybe broken. Maybe it is. But it’s also a lot of fun. There are bullet-sponge drones and robots, enemies with miniguns and armour, but almost all humans can be put down with a gunshot to the head. And taking out a cluster of enemies before they have time to react, or even plugging a whole encampment undetected, is still a god-tier feeling and another of Breakpoint’s positives.

The Details

For every time you get hit by a speeding truck and somehow survive, or plough a motorcycle into a tree and walk it off, or outright fall off a cliff and barely sprain an ankle, there’s some tiny detail that makes you nod and smile to yourself and almost, almost, forget the bad stuff.

Clothes that muddy when you roll down a hill, tyres that pick up clinging dirt, the ability to camouflage yourself with the mud from the ground, the way you throw up a hand as you stumble down a hill into a cliff face, filling up your canteen in a river or eating to give yourself a temporary buff between camps. These tiny details matter, and Breakpoint is full of them. They might seem like small comfort compared to the towering technical issues, but they’re still impressive in their own right.

Adam has been playing Astral Chain, Platinum’s Switch-exclusive sci-fi action game, and to say he’s impressed is a bit of an understatement. As a rookie cop in the special Neuron task force, you must work together with your team and a special living weapon called the Legion to defend against an interdimensional invasion.

Check out the video below to see why it might just be Platinum’s best game yet:

Astral Chain will be released exclusively on Nintendo Switch on August 30th 2019.
