]]>

Crash Bandicoot has been a part of gaming for a long time now, whether as part of a platformer, racer, or something else. Now, Crash and friends are back to take on the medium of online multiplayer, and so far, Crash Team Rumble is pretty good. It is by no means going to appeal to everyone, and it took me a while to appreciate what it was trying to achieve in the closed beta, but there’s a surprising element of strategy to it, and if you can team up with players who actually want to work as a team, it can be a fair amount of fun.

The main purpose of Crash Team Rumble is to collect 2000 wumpa fruit and drop them off at your team’s base. By breaking boxes and picking up the fruit, each character can collect a limited amount. As long as you don’t get killed before dropping them off, they’ll build your team’s amount and edge you closer to victory. Of course, there’re variables which stop this from happening. Your opponents can attack you and take you out, but there’re various traps you can unlock to hamper their progress as well.

There were three specific classes in the beta, and each one serves a purpose when playing. Characters like Crash are Scorers, better suited to collect fruits and drop them back on base due to their effectiveness and speed when breaking boxes and getting around the map. Dingo Dile is a Blocker, fundamentally a big strong boy who uses brute force to both protect the scorer and wipe out any meddling opponents who try to take them out. He can whip enemies with his tale and use his vacuum to suck the life out of them, quite literally. Finally, you have Boosters like Cortex who are better suited at utilising traps across the map, and activating the score multipliers.

These score multipliers are key to collecting more wumpa. Gem platforms are available for each team, and to activate them you simply need to jump on them, however, enemies can also jump on them and break the chain. Once they light up in your team’s colour, they’ll add a percentage bonus depending on how many you activated. A 40% increase in wumpa means if you plan your strategies effectively, you can gather in excess of 500 in a manner of minutes, something I witnessed first hand, if only it was my team making the most of this. One of the biggest issues I had, and not something the developers can control, was a lack of teamwork by players who either don’t know what they’re doing, or simply prefer to just go around and kill their opponents.

The multiplier mechanic is a great way for your team to plan their approach, but if everyone isn’t working together, you’ll often find your dedication to the role you’ve chosen proves to be futile. If you are intending to play Crash Team Rumble with friends, this isn’t going to be an issue. You will find players who want to work together, but for the most part of my time with the closed beta, not everyone wanted to play ball. It’s a shame really, because there’s a strong foundation of gameplay to be built on, and while at first I wasn’t particularly gripped with it, I did start to appreciate the nuanced mechanics of each class and objective when I was part of a strong team.

With many live service games, the reason for returning follows two distinct paths: enjoying the game and what the Battle Passes reward you with. While Crash Team Rumble does have potential for plenty of enjoyment to be had, the Battle Pass at present doesn’t feel that exciting. Certain rewards like cosmetics look fine for what I’ve seen, but levelling up seemed relatively slow compared to the likes of Fortnite. Of course, we’re not at full release just yet, and the likelihood of player feedback being taken into consideration for the full release is a given. Time will tell with just how these improvements come to fruition.

Based purely on the closed beta, Crash Team Rumble has potential. Its simple gameplay structure works great if teammates work together, and the visuals are vibrant enough for fans of the Crash series to appreciate. The Battle Pass could do with some improvements, especially to how slow you seem to level up, and when more maps and characters are added, there’ll definitely be a market for more players to join and enjoy as time goes on.

Crash Team Rumble is coming to PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S|X, Nintendo Switch, and PC on June 20th.

The post Crash Team Rumble release date announced, beta in April appeared first on GodisaGeek.com.

]]>

After being rumoured for a while, Toys for Bob and Activision have announced a release date for Crash Team Rumble, a new title featuring our fav marsupial. Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time was released in 2020 (then in 2021 on Switch), so it’s about time for a new game, and along with that release date, we’re also getting a closed beta for pre-order customers.

Lou Studdert, Associate Creative Director at Toys for Bob explained via the PlayStation Blog, “Crash Team Rumble is an all-new spin on the Crash formula, pitting players into epic 4v4 competitions, where each team aims to collect and bank more Wumpa fruit than the other”.

Before we go much further, let’s check out the new trailer, below:

In truth, the initial reveal trailer itself left me a little confused as to what kind of game it is, so the comments from Studdert were welcome. He added, also via the PS Blog, “Between the many unique and varied heroes, equipable powers to change your loadout, and map specific relic stations that can cause havoc on the enemy team, there’s a lot to unpack and experiment with in Crash Team Rumble. With all the zany chaos you’d expect from the Crash heroes and villains, the first step to understanding how to Rumble is learning your character’s role: Scorer, Blocker, or Booster”.

There will be a closed beta for Crash Team Rumble starting on April 20th, running until April 24th, and on that note, Studdert has some advice for people who get to play, saying: “Be sure to experiment with the powers and characters available in beta! Any power can be equipped to any hero, so there’s a lot of room for experimentation to see what play style suits you the best. There’s even more planned for the final launch of the game, so while this is only a small taste of what’s in store, it’s a great chance to see what strategy feels the most fun. We can’t wait to rumble with you when our beta launches on April 20”.

To get access to the closed beta you’ll need to pre-order. The game itself is coming on June 20th, 2023 to PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S|X.

The post Diablo 4 beta is downloadable from tomorrow appeared first on GodisaGeek.com.

]]>

Activision Blizzard has announced when the Diablo 4 beta will be available to pre-load, and what you’ll be able to play during it.

The early download for the early access period of the Diablo 4 beta starts from tomorrow, Wednesday March 15th at 4pm UK time. The early access period is for customers who have pre-ordered the game. Everyone else can jump into the Diablo 4 beta later, with the early download for that section starting on March 22nnd at 4pm UK time.

Just to make it entirely clear, here are the beta dates:

  • Early Access to the Open Beta begins March 17 at 9 a.m. PDT and concludes March 20 at 12 p.m. PDT.
  • The Open Beta begins March 24 at 9 a.m. PDT and concludes March 27 at 12 p.m. PDT.

In terms of what you’ll be able to play, the Diablo 4 beta will include the “snow-laden Fractured Peaks where you will find Kyovashad, a safe zone in the mountains, and many Side Quests you can find along your journeys in addition to the Main Questline”, says Activision Blizzard, who also added: “Do make sure to check out the Woodsman of Nevesk Side Quest if you find yourself near the town of Nevesk”.

During the Early Access weekend, players will have access to three classes. Assume the role of the battle-bred Barbarian, nimble Rogue, or elementally tuned Sorcerer. Once the Open Beta weekend comes around, the earthen Druid and undead-wielding Necromancer classes can also be played in addition to the original three.

A maximum of 10 characters can be made per Battle.net account. After reaching Level 25 with one character, we recommend you try repelling demonic hordes with additional classes to find your favorite. While progress will transfer from Early Access to Open Beta weekends, all characters made during these weekends will be deleted once the Beta ends.

There will also be a challenge in the beta in the form of Ashava, a boss battle that Blizzard says you should play with friends. The developer says a sizeable loot reward is on offer for those who complete it, but says “It is thought that one wanderer alone cannot bring this beast to its knees. Come prepared for an intense fight and recruit your friends and other players to pursue the ultimate glory of conquering one of the Burning Hells’ most heinous creations to date”.

The Ashava fight is available at the following times during the beta:

  • March 18 at 10 a.m., 12 p.m., 10 p.m. and midnight PDT
  • March 25 at 10 a.m., 12 p.m., 10 p.m. and midnight PDT

Players should use the Diablo forums to report and bugs and provide feedback.

Diablo 4 is coming to PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S|X on June 6th, 2023.

Blizzard has announced that the Winter Wonderland event for Overwatch 2 has started, including arcade game modes, challenges, and more.

The festivities will run from today (December 14th) right up until January 4th, and there will be chances to unlock weapon charms, player icons, sprays, and skins. Here’s the official word on the additions coming in this event:

We’ve got some ice-cold arcade modes lined up for this year’s Winter Wonderland! First up is Mei’s Snowball Offensive, where Mei no longer fires a stream of frost or icicles but instead fires snowballs to instantly knock out her opponents in a 6v6 Elimination or an 8-player FFA Deathmatch ruleset.

Next is Mei’s Yeti Hunt, a unique 5v1 raid-boss brawl. A Yeti is stealing food from the local village, and it’s up to the team of five Mei players to set traps and freeze the rampaging Yeti—but be careful! If he steals too much meat, he will go into an outrage and can easily wipe out the enemy team. Carefully spread out, set your traps, and catch the Yeti!

Finally, Freezethaw Elimination is Overwatch 2’s version of freeze tag, where the goal is to freeze all the opponents by eliminating them while getting your own teammates back in the game by thawing them. No game is ever truly complete unless you make sure to chill each of your opponents to the bone in this fast-paced elimination game mode.

On top of this there will be Twitch drops for the game, such as watching for two hours to get the Ramattra “restrained” spray, or even more for the “travelling Monk” skin. You have to claim the first before you can accumulate time for the second, so don’t forget to do that.

Lastly, Blizzard has said that players who log in to their Overwatch 2 account from December 20th to January 4th will receive a wreath weapon charm and the 2023 celebration hat player icon as a “little something from us to you”.

Overwatch 2 is free to play and out now for PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch.

The latest expansion for Hearthstone, ‘Murder at Castle Nathria,’ is now live, featuring the mystery of Sire Denathrius’ murder at his own dinner party. 135 new cards are included in the newest expansion which include Legendary Suspects, a new Location card type, and a new Keyword: Infuse.

The new Location card type will be added to Hearthstone permanently, and can be activated at the cost of durability, with a Cooldown of one turn between activations. The new card type takes up a slot on the player’s board, but enemies can’t interact with them unless a card states otherwise. With each Location card comes a potential scene of the crime or alibi, and each Class will have a specific location.

Any card with the Infuse keyword will drink the “intoxicating anima” surrendered whenever a friendly minion dies, mutating into mightier versions of themselves. Players can hold these cards until they’re infused, with the transformation signified by new artwork. Finally, the Legendary Suspects are minions present at the time the murder was committed, making everyone a suspect.

For plenty more details on all the cards including the expansion, along with other important details, you can check out the official site for a full rundown.

Activision has shared a cool video today of Garry Kasparov taking on Hearthstone. It marks 25 years since the chess grandmaster lost to an A.I. opponent. In the mini-documentary titled ‘The Brain’s Last Stand,’ it follows Kasparov as he prepares for a brand new challenge.

“I enjoyed learning and playing Hearthstone very much, and not just because I like games and new challenges. What was most intriguing is that Hearthstone is a semi-open system, unlike most other games, which are closed systems like chess,” said Kasparov. “In Hearthstone, the dynamic of new cards constantly adds freshness and new tactical and strategic elements, so the values of old cards and decks aren’t static. This shifting terrain makes Hearthstone difficult to master but endlessly engaging.”

The Call of Duty Endowment today announced the #CODEMedicalHeroes campaign.  The campaign honours veteran medics and hospital corpsmen.  The initiative also aims to bring attention to the difficulties that veterans face finding jobs in the civilian healthcare industry. Through a series of Call of Duty: Warzone in-game activations, exclusive content packs, and partnerships throughout the month of May, the #CODEMedicalHeroes campaign aims to raise a total of $3 million to fund veteran employment efforts, placing over 5,800 veterans into jobs.

The centerpiece of the campaign is the Call of Duty Endowment Battle Doc Pack, now available in both Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War and Call of Duty: Warzone. All of Activision’s net proceeds for the pack will go to the Endowment. The pack features a brand-new Operator Skin created in partnership with Army Veteran Combat Medic Timothy Hobbs Jr., an avid Call of Duty player.

Bobby Kotick, CEO of Activision Blizzard had this to say:

“The Call of Duty Endowment is dedicated to unlocking the value that veterans can bring to the civilian workforce.  Unemployment and underemployment have often hit veterans hard, even more so during the ongoing pandemic, and we want to support our amazing partners who work tirelessly transitioning former service members into meaningful employment.”

Revival Challenge

#CODEMedicalHeroes will also honour medical service members in-game through the Revival Challenge in Call of Duty: Warzone. From now until May 9, players who revive five people while playing Warzone will unlock a unique Call of Duty Endowment calling card.  If one million players complete the challenge, a double-XP Day will be given to all Call of Duty: Warzone players. Additionally, Activision Blizzard will donate $1 to the Endowment for each player that completes the challenge, up to $1 million.

Activision has announced the worldwide launch of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War.

Cold War is a direct sequel to fan favourite Call of Duty: Black Ops, and infuses the 1980s pop cultures into a gripping conspiracy set at the height of the Cold War. The fictional story campaign will see players having to stop a plot decades in the making that threatens to destabilise the global balance of power and change the course of history.

Along with the single player campaign, Cold War also comes with the next generation of online multiplayer and an all-new co-operative Zombies survival mode. Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War supports cross-play across next generation and current generation systems with cross progression across all modes. Players have also been promised a series of free, post-launch content across Multiplayer and Zombies, as well as a robust schedule of in-game community events.

“Today’s launch starts the next great Black Ops experience across story, multiplayer and zombies in a direct sequel to one of the most iconic titles in Call of Duty,” said Byron Beede, Executive Vice President and General Manager, Call of Duty, Activision.  “This is just the beginning.  Our players can look forward to the biggest series of post-launch free content, community events and ongoing support ever in Black Ops plus tight integration across the ecosystem with Warzone.  It’s a great time to play Call of Duty.”

The release of a new Black Ops title adds to the momentum across Call of Duty following the recent releases of Warzone and Modern Warfare, along with Call of Duty: Mobile, pushing the franchise to more than 100 million monthly active users.

Call of Duty: Warzone is the free-to-play title that will now integrate with both Black Ops Cold War and Modern Warfare. Progression will be synchronised across all three titles, and weapon progression from Black Ops Cold War or Modern Warfare both will be shared with Warzone. From today, Black Ops Cold War Operators will be available for play in Warzone, and from December 10 at the launch of Season One, Black Ops Cold War weapons will be added too.

The Battle Pass system continues, and will start in Season One in December with brand new content for Black Ops Cold War. Warzone players can progress through the battle pass system by playing any of the three Call of Duty games.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is available now worldwide on PlayStation 5 (Australia, Japan, New Zealand, North America, Singapore and South Korea, and November 19 for the rest of the world), PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One and PC.

Today, Activision was announced there’s going to be a selection of current pro skaters added to the roster of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 and 2. When it releases on September 4, skaters Nyjah Huston, Leo Baker, Leticia Bufoni, Aori Nishimura, Lizzie Armanto, Shane O’Neill, Riley Hawk, and Tyshawn Jones will be joining the OGs.

“Modern-day skateboarding originated from a generation of skaters who grew up playing the original Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater games,” said Michelle Bresaw, Vice President of Product Management and Marketing at Activision. “The world-class pro skaters we’re adding to this remaster took the tricks and combos from the videogame and made them possible in real life. We’re proud that the remaster will represent the skate culture landscape today with a diverse roster of skaters that will appeal to any gamer.”

Some of the new pros have appeared in past Tony Hawk’s games, however, it’ll be the first time they’ve all been able to grind, ollie, and kickflip in the original two games. They’ll all bring their signature tricks to the remasters throughout all of the modes and levels. Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 and 2 can now be pre-ordered, and for those that pre-order digitally, you’ll get access to the Warehouse demo on August 14.

You can read more information, including local pricing, here. You can also watch the trailer for today’s announcement below:

The post Solos is coming to Warzone appeared first on GodisaGeek.com.

]]>

If you’ve been playing Warzone and think three is two too many for a team then this news will interest you. Solos is making its way to Warzone. No more carrying the team but on the other no one to blame if the play goes awry.

In Solos you’ll drop into Verdansk alone with typical Battle Royale rules. Just you, a pistol and a few bullets which has been described as a typical CoD free-for-all except on a massive scale.

You can loot, complete contracts and attempt to survive against the other 149 players. All the while the circle is getting smaller and closing you in. You can still jump into the Gulag for some 1v1 but if you lose, you’re done. As with all BR games, last standing wins.

If you’re feeling a bit nervous about taking on the Warzone on your own, Activision has your back. They’ve put together 5 tips to help you through it:

  1. Going Solo? Intel is Your Best Teammate. Along with paying attention to the Tac Map and Compass, be especially thorough about finding, and equipping, reconnaissance tools such as the Recon Drone, Heartbeat Monitor, and UAV.
  2. Same Gulag. Same Player Count. No Buybacks. You only have one life to live in Solos. Make it count, both in the Gulag and out in Verdansk.
  3. Consider Picking Up Contracts. This especially goes for Recon Contracts, as in Solos, the station capture time is halved compared to other modes. Complete Contracts and get Cash to further build up your loadout at Buy Stations.
  4. … and Stay Down. Self-Revive Kits are in Solos. If it’s getting late into a game and you’re wary of an enemy after knocking them to zero health, double check that they are out for good before moving on.
  5. Learn from Your Solos. While you may have less of a chance at winning Solos, take the lessons you learn into your next game with the squad. Who knows? A few Solos matches could be the difference between losing your next Battle Royale trios game and a hard-fought victory.

If you have your eye on the number one spot then best get some practice in.

Later in the season, Khandor Hideout will join the rotation with an isolated desert turned battleground, suitable for versatile tactics and diverse playstyles.

New Gunfight Maps: The Modern Warfare Classic, Rust will also make its appearance as a Gunfight map, delivering a new setting for intense, close-quarters 2v2 matches. In Bazaar, coming later in the season, experience a tension-filled Gunfight amongst a tightly contained cross-section of the streets of Urzikstan.

New Multiplayer Modes: In the Call of Duty League Ruleset Playlist available now, all fans can play like the pros. Later in Season Two, Gunfight Tournaments will make a return as players enter the single elimination 2v2 firefight and battle to win rewards. Throughout the season, additional modes will be available including fan-favourite mode Demolition, pitting two teams against each other with the objective of attacking or destroying bomb sites.

New Trials: Four new trials will be included in Season Two for players to put their skills to the test and earn up to a three-star ranking and XP. In Quad Race, hop onto an ATV and master the course for the fastest time. In Fire in the Hole, practice throwing skills by tossing lethal equipment on a target. In Price’s Alley, sharpen decision-making and eliminate the enemy as you face waves of hostiles mixed with civilians. In Behind Enemy Lines, find and eliminate all hostiles in the area of operations as quickly as possible.

Players that own the Season Two Battle Pass will be instantly rewarded with an unlock for iconic and fan-favourite Special Forces Operator Simon “Ghost” Riley, playable across all Multiplayer and Special Ops modes, along with access to even more Weapon Blueprints, XP tokens, Operator Skins, challenges and watches. Plus, players who reach tier 100 will have unlocked a total of 1,300 COD points that can be used to pick up even more cool content in the Store.

With the success of PUBG and Fortnite on mobile, it should come as no surprise that Activision has brought Call of Duty to the App Store and Google Play store. The only surprise is that it’s taken this long, really.

In collaboration with Tencent Games and developed by their TiMi Studios, Call of Duty: Mobile brings the blockbuster franchise to mobile as a free-to-play FPS. It includes weapons, maps and iconic characters from all across the franchise, including the Modern Warfare and Black Ops series, in an all-in-one multiplayer experience with traditional head-to-head modes and an “all-new Battle Royale experience including classic locations from Call of Duty featuring land, sea and air vehicles.”

“Call of Duty: Mobile represents a landmark moment for us to bring one of the most successful entertainment franchises in history to the world’s largest platform,” said Bobby Kotick, CEO of Activision Blizzard. “This is a triple-A, free to play experience that we’re delivering to a whole new audience of fans.”

Activision, in collaboration with Tencent, have announced that Call of Duty: Mobile will launch on October 1 in countries that support Google Play and the App Store. Unfortunately Mainland China and Vietnam aren’t included.

Call of Duty: Mobile will have fan favourite maps, modes weapons and characters from across the Call of Duty series including the Modern Warfare and Black Ops series. CoD: Mobile is being developed by Tencent’s Timi Studios and is free to play on Android and iOS.

“We are delivering the definitive, first-person action experience on mobile with signature Call of Duty gameplay in the palms of your hands,” said Chris Plummer, VP, Mobile at Activision. “We are bringing together some of the best the franchise has to offer, including Modern Warfare maps like Crash and CrossfireBlack Ops maps like Nuketown and Hijacked, and many more, into one epic title. We’ve tested the game extensively in select territories and the feedback we’ve received has helped us refine the experience for October 1st.”

CoD: Mobile will launch with multiplayer and battle royal modes with more modes, content, time limited events and playlists to be added regularly.

Multiplayer will have classic modes like Team Deathmatch, Search and Destroy and Free-for-All and include some recognisable maps like Nuketown, Crash and Highjacked. As you rank up you can earn and unlock Call of Duty characters like John “Soap” McTavish and Simon “Ghost” Riley from the Modern Warfare series and Alex Mason from Black Ops. CoD: Mobile will also include weapons, score streaks and additional gear, for equipping and customizing loadouts.

The battle royale mode has been specifically built and tailored for CoD: Mobile and will have up to 100 players facing off against each other. You can do this solo, as part of a duo or as a team of 4. You will also be fighting across land, sea and air with vehicles including an ATV, helicopter, and tactical raft. You’ll also find weapons from throughout the CoD series scattered about the map.

If CoD: Mobile sounds like your kind of thing then you can sign up and pre-register at www.callofduty.com/mobile.

]]>

Last night, the world got its first taste of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’s multiplayer. Streamed live, the event teased the game’s new 2v2 Gunfight mode, which pits two teams of two against one another on small, custom-designed maps.

In this mode, everyone gets the same loadout, so it’s all about the skill of each player on a level playing field. Every two rounds, the loadout will change, and with each round only lasting 40 seconds it’s probably going to be the most frantic Call of Duty game mode to date. After 40 seconds, if no team has won, a flag will spawn at random as part of “Overtime.” You’ll have 10 seconds to capture the flag, only then by holding it for 3 seconds. During Overtime, either capturing the flag or killing the other team will win the round. The first team to win 6 rounds is the overall winner.

Three maps were shown last night:

  • King: the interior of a warehouse.
  • Pine: the exterior of a dense forest.
  • Stack: a desert container yard.

Activision says that Gunfight can be compared to a fighting game, with its fast-paced action and quick turnaround times. How this game mode will work for those of us not very good at Call of Duty (my reflexes are those of an old man, when it comes to these games), remains to be seen.

What else remains to be seen is the remainder of the Modern Warfare multiplayer, which will be fully unveiled on August 1st via Twitch. Activision and Infinity Ward will also be releasing “intel drops” throughout July, in the run up to the full reveal.

And finally, it has been revealed that pre-orders of Modern Warfare will unlock the Classic Captain Price character in Call of Duty: Black Ops 4.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare releases on October 25th for Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC.

]]>

With National Armed Forces Day approaching, Activision has released a promotional video to support the ‘Call of Duty Endowment’ project, and raise awareness for the incredible work it does for ex-armed forces personnel.

Established in 2009, the Endowment’s initial goal was to identify and fund (through its ‘Seal of Distinction’ programme) best-in-class organisations to place 25,000 ex-service personnel into high quality jobs by the end of 2018. Now in its tenth year of operation, having met that original goal two years early (supporting more than 57,261 placements to date), the Endowment in-part through its expansion to the UK in 2017, has revised its pledge to secure placements for a total of 100,000 by 2024.

Additionally, since 2009, eleven such Endowment grantees including; ‘RFEA – The Forces Employment Charity’ and ‘Walking with the Wounded’ in the UK, have been awarded a total of £28 million in grants, to support their employment programmes. As a result, ninety-three percent of ex-service personnel job placements they have made, were for full-time work, with an 87% six-month retention rate.

Funding for the Endowment predominantly comes from Activision’s direct support, corporate partners and the sale of bespoke Endowment themed ‘Call of Duty’ in-game digital items, most recently the ‘Salute Pack’ available in Black Ops 4. One hundred percent of Activision revenue from these purchases goes towards Endowment grantees, with Activision Blizzard paying for all of the Endowment’s overhead costs. It’s a result of this incredible support from our gaming community that we’ve been able to make such an impact, however, there’s still a long way to go to meet our 100,000 goal, and a role you can help play in bringing greater awareness to this important cause.

We’d like to offer Activision our full support of the project, and if you could spend a few minutes watching the ‘Changing Perspectives’ video below, it would mean a lot.

The 2019 All-Star Overwatch League Game between the Atlantic and Pacific Divisions was won by the Atlantic, while the 1v1 Widowmaker event was won by the Pacific Division’s Diem.

If you had no idea this was going on, don’t worry, I didn’t either, although I think that’s because I forgot. In a best of four series the Atlantic Division roared into a 3-0 lead before the Atlantic Division pulled a game back with Dorado before finally succumbing to their opponents.

The Pacific Division’s Diem from the Shanghai Dragons won the Widowmaker 1v1 event after taking down San Francisco Shock’s Viol2t and Seoul Dynasty’s Fleta to advance to the finals where he beat San Francisco Shock’s Nenne and take the competition. Nenne had to break his way through Philadelphia Fusion’s Carpe and his own teammate Pine to get there.

In a twist the Pacific Division earned some bragging rights by beating the Atlantic Division 3-1 in the All-Star Arcade. The winning team won on Sibling Rivalry (6v6 Genji’s and Hanzo’s per team), Healers Never Die (6v6 Supports only) and Keeping the Peace (6v6 McCree only) while Atlantic took Terrible, Terrible Damage (6v6 Damage only). Finally the Overwatch League casting team split off into two teams and at the end the Atlantic Division won, lead by Brennon Hook.

The regular season returns on Thursday June 6, and you’ll be able to catch all the action on the official Twitch channel.

The post Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is an elegant evolution of everything FromSoft do so well appeared first on GodisaGeek.com.

]]>

It’s impossible to deny there’s something unequivocally special about FromSoft games. Be it Dark Souls or Bloodborne, each arduous journey is a stark lesson that patience is indeed a virtue. Success isn’t achieved by flailing a blade or spamming the attack buttons, but by watching your enemy carefully, engaged in a respectful dance of death as you wait for an opportunity to strike. There’s no refuting Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice follows many of the tropes of a FromSoft title, but the mechanics have evolved.

You’re still tested in the fires of battle, and enemies still have distinct patterns of attack, but you’ve got some specific new abilities which make the art of war more graceful. I had the pleasure of playing around two hours of Hidetaka Miyazaki’s new game, and whilst there was an uncomfortable amount of death on my part, I got to appreciate the changes, both subtle and substantial, that the team has employed to make this more than just another ‘Soulsborne’ game.

The environments I saw made it clear that this wasn’t to be another gothic nightmare. There’s a lot of beauty in your surroundings, which at times adds to the eerie sense of serenity. One such location was Senpou Temple, filled with luscious trees and the chanting of monks. Moving through the thick grass (which you can hide in), I spotted these monks as they prayed. The second they see you, though, that calm is shattered in cascades of violence. The Hirata Estate is draped in fire, drowning in orange flames which add to the anxiety I felt travelling through the wreckage of the burning wood. Huge statues adorned the rooms, and with a rousing soundtrack to accompany the terror, Sekiro has that visual and audio perfection we’ve grown used to in From games.

You play as the “One-armed Wolf,” a pre-written protagonist who renders character creation obsolete, along with many of the RPG elements of Sekiro’s sister titles. The focus is on the tactical decisions you make in a swordfight and the ability to move fluidly though the stunning Sengoku Period environments that From Software has built so masterfully. As the wolf, you are equipped with a katana and a prosthetic arm that can be fitted with a range of appendages, including a grappling hook, that aid in battle and traversal.

The stamina bar is absent, so movement feels natural and at the same time meaningful. The first area beyond the tutorial was filled with autumnal flora, battered strongholds, and cliffs I was able to grapple onto, traversing the area efficiently and swiftly. When a green icon appears, a simple press of the L2 button lets you hoist yourself to a higher point from which to survey nearby members of the Achina clan. Points of grapple appear often, but you need to be within a certain range to be able to attach your hook to them.

Something I loved was the ability to jump into the air, or off a tall building, before launching my hook mid-plummet to pull myself towards a hanging tree branch or nearby cliff edge. There’s a great diversity in how you can move about with you grappling hook – something that feels alien and yet ultimately refreshing in a FromSoft game. You embody the Shinobi in all its glory, using stealth to find a perfect vantage point from which to strike, and it’s gratifying as you take out multiple enemies without so much as a whisper.

From above you can drop down onto foes and kill them in silence. An illuminated red dot appears on their back signifying a stealth kill is available, and with a tap of the R1 button you’ll plunge your katana deep into their unsuspecting flesh, causing a waterfall of blood to fountain from their wounds. It’s as beautiful as it is horrific, embodying the kind of wondrous gore seen in movies like Blades of the Immortal and Kill Bill. You can also sneak up from behind and do the same, and silence is as much your ally as the blade itself.

Whilst using stealth is the better option, there’ll be times when facing your enemies is a given, but this is where gameplay feels very differently to that of both Dark Souls and Bloodborne. As mentioned earlier, the stamina bar doesn’t exist. Combat now revolves around poise and posture, and after breaking down an enemy’s defence, you are provided with a moment to deliver a killer blow. It makes fights more meaningful and means you approach each encounter with an added air of strategy.

You block with L1, but also use it to parry, catching rival samurais off-guard, and by pressing R1 at the right time you can deliver that final strike – although some of the tougher enemies won’t die after one blow. Above their health bar will be red dots, each one indicating how many of these decisive hits it’ll take to kill them. This is where the difficulty really steps up: approaching someone with two dots means a longer battle is afoot, so making sure you have maximum White Spirit Emblems and Health Gourds is key.

One way in which Sekiro does share similarities with what’s come before is the different items you must use against enemies, or to help yourself. Fistfuls of Ash can be thrown to temporarily blind, and Ceramics can be thrown to distract. Oil can cover areas or enemies so you can set them ablaze, and specific Sugars can provide temporary boosts to attack and defence. Whilst Health Gourds provide a substantial increase to your vitality, Pebbles can be found and used to resupply health, even if it’s not quite as much as you’d like.

It wouldn’t be right if death wasn’t your teacher. Thankfully, Sekiro gives you a lifeline. At each Sculptor’s Idol (think Bonfire), not only do you replenish your Health Gourds (Estus Flasks), and your White Spirit Emblems (an item needed to use your prosthetic’s attachments), but it’ll give you back one chance at resurrection. This means a great deal in those moments when you get caught out by an opponent’s almighty attack, only to be thrown one more chance without returning to the last Sculptor’s Idol you rested at.

In the time I spent with Sekiro, I fought enemies that launched burning arrows at me, rushed at me with huge spears, matched my strength with swords of their own, and herculean ogres that thrashed their fists with otherworldly rage. I tangled with a mid-level boss shackled by chains, using his arms to grab me and smash my body hard into the ground. I had to adapt with each encounter, and learning when to strike became a challenge within itself. Some enemies took less time to dispatch, and I’d become too complacent, allowing my over confidence to get the better of me. Dodging is still a massive part of combat, and to think anything different is arrogant, as I found out all too often.

Instead of having a light and heavy attack, the R2 button is now used to play with your prosthetic upgrades. I managed to play around with some of these, and they gave me some advantages when approached by the enemy. One such weapon was a giant axe that, while slow, deals a decent amount of damage when used at the right time. I also had a ranged attack in the form of the Shuriken, so whenever a distant archer fired at me, I’d dodge and launch a slew of metal stars to take them out. Using them against enemies with shields or swords was less effective as they can block them, but at the right time when they’re off guard, I could still make use of their deadly advantage.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is a much different game to what’s come before, but the similar teachings we’ve been privy to from Miyazaki and company sit at its heart. The ability to jump, reach greater heights with the grappling hook, and use brand new attacks with the katana are all original, but knowing when to strike and mastering the art of the dodge are all just as imperative as before. These new mechanics won’t divide fans of From Software – quite the contrary – they’ll push them to learn new ways to take down the wave of evil terrorising their version of 16th century Feudal Japan. Less RPG and more action, Sekiro is the next punishment you’ll visit upon yourselves, and the demonic forces at work in FromSoft’s latest epic will make fighting the monsters of Yarnham seem like child’s play.

Tomorrow the final of KFC’s first ever eSports tournament and sixteen players will fight it out over a £50,000 prize pool and a KFC Black Card.

For those that don’t know (like me until about 5 minutes ago) a KFC Black Card entitles the user to unlimited KFC chicken, which is surely worth the price of the tournament itself? But the winner will also walk away £15,000 richer as well. There were sixteen qualifying rounds over five weeks leading up to this, and now the sixteen finalists have teamed up with a bunch of content creators and have been training together ready to kick ass in the name of chicken.

You’ll be able to watch the final from 3pm uk time tomorrow via the streams of the content creators, details for which you can find here: http://www.kfcroyale.com/kfc/leagues/final/1257-grand-final

Destiny developer Bungie and Activision have called it quits on the relationship that brought us Destiny and Destiny 2, with the developer set to self publish future Destiny games.

As Activision look to concentrate on their own IP projects Bungie (in a post over on Bungie.net) state that thanks to the strength of the Destiny community that they will retain the publishing rights to Destiny and “continue to deliver on the existing Destiny roadmap”. As the two companies arrange the handoff to ensure that it’s completed as smoothly as possible, Bungie state that they’re “releasing more seasonal experiences in the coming months” and “surprising our community with some exciting announcements about what lies beyond.”

Bungie are obviously confident that they will be able to continue to deliver good experiences in Destiny going forward. Mick reviewed the Forsaken expansion back in September 2018 giving it 8.5/10, but believes that the latest part of the roadmap – Niobe Labs – is just a bit too much.

What do you think about this development? Do you even play Destiny any more? Let us know below

Destiny 2: Why Niobe Labs is a grind too far https://www.godisageek.com/2019/01/destiny-2-niobe-labs-grind-far/ https://www.godisageek.com/2019/01/destiny-2-niobe-labs-grind-far/#respond Wed, 09 Jan 2019 11:22:38 +0000 http://www.godisageek.com/?p=218273 With the launch of the Niobe Labs content for The Black Armory, Bungie are moving Destiny 2 in yet another new direction. But is it what the community asked for, or yet another misstep? Mick Fraser suspects it may be the latter.

Well, it’s been a while hasn’t it? But we’re back again now having vanquished Christmas and defeated New Year with a more or less informed and semi-intelligent opinion on Destiny 2‘s Black Armory content. But – and here’s the important question – has the content been worth talking about? In a word, yes – but not for all the right reasons.

I say “content”, of course, because calling it an “expansion” isn’t really accurate. It’s more just a series of long-ass checkbox quests with 4 versions of a new event and one damned infuriating puzzle. At the time of writing it’s 16 hours from the unveiling of the Niobe Labs, the gateway to the 4th and final Lost Forge, and the community is still trying to beat the puzzle that unlocks the actual event.

For context, the Lost Forges are group events that see you charging up Black Armory weapon frames with menial tasks before hurling radiant batteries dropped from glowing enemies into a big melting pot in the middle of a small map. That’s nutshelling, obviously, but that’s the gist. As Destiny 2 events go, the Forges are quite fun. They offered a decent level of challenge initially, but once your Guardian hits around 620 Power they become way easier. At 650, they’re a doddle.

While many thought the final Forge would be the mysterious Niobe Labs where Black Armory vendor Ada-1 was first created (she’s an Exo, see?), it turns out that in actual fact the 4th Forge will be the Bergusia Forge, an area at this moment fenced off by a ridiculously convoluted puzzle in the Labs.

By peering through the scopes of the three main Black Armory weapons (the Bow, Sniper Rifle and Light Machine Gun) players can find hidden clues scrawled around the Labs. Since the event went live, fireteams all over the world have been working feverishly to solve the puzzle, but after 16 hours have only reached stage 6 of a thus far undisclosed number of stages. When the first fireteam beats it, the 4th Forge will unlock for everyone. Until then, you need to jump in and start working it out or sit on the sidelines and wait.

I have a problem with this. Firstly, let me say that it’s a great piece of content in of itself. As an optional puzzle, or an Exotic Weapon quest, it would be fine. But I get to play games for a few hours a day most days. I spent two hours doing what I could in Niobe Labs without my fireteam (who weren’t available to play with at the time) but I got nowhere. Then I had to go do real life stuff, then eat, sleep, go to work. If the puzzle is solved before I get back on, the Forge will be unlocked for me. I could, Bungie tell me, go in and solve the puzzle myself if I want to, but it has been 16 hours of work for several thousand people to even get this far. Anyone I group with will have inevitably watched or learned the sequence to solve the puzzle, meaning the sense of accomplishment for me will always be out of reach. I can follow a bunch of instructions, but what’s the point? The puzzle, the mystery, the excitement, will fade the moment someone cracks the final stage.

This is not okay. This is pure streamer fuel. Twitch, YouTube, Twitter, Reddit, were all abuzz after the Tuesday Reset with people tackling the puzzle. But for a massive percentage of the player base, this meant waiting around for their next chance to play, or giving up after several hours of fruitless labour. I read that Bungie staff had started dropping subtle hints and cryptic clues after around a dozen hours. If you have to do that, as devs, then you have made the puzzle too hard. Simple.

I will say again that I have no problem with the puzzle itself being in the game, but even I, as an avid D2 player with a thousand + hours between the two games, do not have a chance of unlocking this puzzle for myself before anyone else does. I’ve no place in the race, because I can’t sit for 20 hours with two other people to do it. This is not okay.

Where’s my opportunity to “become legend”? If I’m relegated to waiting for someone else to do the work, while I’m actually at work, or feeding my kids, or doing real life stuff because I’m not a streamer or YouTuber or a single person with the time to sit and solve a deliberately convoluted puzzle designed to be solved by people on Twitch to keep Bungie in the spotlight, what am I really getting out of this? The buzz of watching a community come together? Yeah. Great. That lasted a good hour, then I went off to do something else.

Maybe Bungie really can’t win. We want content to last longer, but really the Black Armory has only lasted longer because of time-gated missions, ridiculous grinds and stuff like Niobe Labs. If this is the way Destiny 2 is heading, I don’t think I’ll bother sticking around. If even endgame players can’t get fully involved in endgame content, then who is the content really for? YouTubers, Streamers and influencers?

Good luck to all those still banging their heads against keyboards trying to unlock Bergusia, but if a the rest of us get is another Forge to throw balls at, then in my opinion this has been yet another misfire for Bungie.

Well, what a busy couple of weeks it’s been for Destiny 2 fans. The Black Armory launched, we’ve got a new Raid, new gear, a new area in the Tower, and now we’re in the midst of the 3-week Dawning Event that will take us into the New Year. All in all, that’s a busy social calendar for any Guardian, but there’s still some lingering bad feeling between the public and Activision-Bungie.

There’s still a genuine question hanging over the current and eventually price-tag attached to Destiny 2 and its largest expansion, Forsaken. The business model is horribly anti-consumer, as Bungie charge for every new piece of premium content – that is, everything that permanently adds to the story or the content pool of Destiny 2. Not only are people upset about how wildly the expansions differ in both quality and volume, but questions have to be asked about the overall cost of something like the Annual Pass because, let’s be clear, we got The Dawning and Crimson Days, etc, for free in the past. They surely don’t count as part of the Annual Pass, which leaves us with three expansions: The Black Armory, Joker’s Wild (due in Spring 2019) and Penumbra (due in Summer 2019).

So let’s examine The Black Armory DLC, which has just dropped. Arguably, there is less new content here than we received in Warmind or The Curse of Osiris. There is no new gameplay zone, there are no new Strikes, and there’s not really any story added. What we’ve got is an, admittedly fun, new arena mode, The Lost Forges, a new bounty vendor and a host of new gear, including weapons, armour, Shaders, Sparrows and Ghost Shells. Now, there is a third Forge yet to drop (so far we have two), as well as a related fourth event called Niobe Labs and the quest for the return of the much-anticipated Exotic Handcannon, The Last Word. But, if you ask most players what they think, I can almost guarantee they’ll tell you it’s not enough to fully justify the individual price-tag or the cost of the Annual Pass. It equates to what would be a mid-sized title update in something like Warframe. I suppose, though, as in all things Destiny-related, if you’re willing to put in the time and spend another 12 to 30 hours grinding every last Exotic, Triumph, and armour set, you’ll get your money’s worth from The Black Armory eventually.

But, is the content itself any good? Well, we’ve yet to see the third Forge, Izunami, but it’s unlikely to be much different to either Volundr or Gofannon, and no one really knows what the Niobe Labs is going to be yet, but we’re guessing it’s another Forge-like event and part of The Last Word questline. What’s here is pretty standard though. Tess Everis has a butt-load of new cosmetic stuff to either grind for or buy from her store, there’s a new vendor selling bounties and there’s a new six-player Raid set inside the Last City itself called Scourge of the Past.

The Forges are pretty entertaining, and come as close as Destiny 2 has so far gotten to either Prison of Elders or Archon’s Forge – plus, you can matchmake into them, which is a massive bonus. There was a lot of fuss about the original Light requirement, which Bungie soon dropped in the quickest hot-fix they have ever applied, lowering the requirement by 5 Light, or should I say, Power Levels. It’s much more balanced now, but still a challenge. I began the week at 599, and was 610 by the Sunday before reset and able to finish Volundr with a similarly-levelled Fireteam without too much trouble.

I’m actually glad I couldn’t finish the first Forge on day one, because it forced me to grind my Powerful Engrams, and gave me ample time to complete the preliminary quests. See, not only do you have to follow a mini questline to unlock each Forge, but the weapons you create within them begin as frames and must be built up by completing a checklist of quests before you can finish them off by igniting a Forge.

Each Forge has three phases of enemies (in Volundr, they’re Cabal; in Gofannon, they’re Fallen) which you have to hold off. In Phase 1 and 2, a timer counts down from 60 seconds, and you have to add to it by killing glowing blue enemies. These enemies also drop Batteries, which you must pick up and throw into the Forge to ignite it. The first two rounds require 20 Batteries be deposited, while the final round asks you to kill the Forge Warden as quickly as possible. You’ll drop gear and materials for each completion, as well as finish any Black Armory weapon frames you’ve previously advanced to their final stages.

There’s not much of a story behind it all, other than that you’re helping the secretive Armory restore its former glories by reclaiming the Forges and destroying the various alien menaces who have stolen them.

Elsewhere in Destiny 2, the time of the Dawning is upon us once again, Destiny’s festive, Christmassy Event that will run for the next three weeks. While there are no additional quest lines or anything as cool as the Festival of the Lost’s Haunted Forest, there is an oven. And baking. And a Sparrow shaped like a sleigh that fires Glimmer out of its arse when you boost. So there’s that. To be honest, the Dawning Event this year is pretty entertaining, as you track down ingredients to bake snacks for the all the NPCs. The oven comes courtesy of one Eva Levante, who OG Destiny players will remember as being the Shader and Emblem vendor back in the day. Where the hell she’s been since, we don’t know, and where she got this magic oven that converts alien body parts into sugary snacks is yet another mystery – and one we probably don’t want answering. Anyway, there’s a full list of all the recipes and where to find the ingredients here.

In the Crucible, Mayhem has made a return for the week. This is by far my favourite game mode, as your ability and supers recharge at an incredibly fast rate, and heavy ammo drops like confetti. Matches truly are mayhem, and the whole thing is just frantic fun.

I’m not about to tell you The Black Armory is value for money either way, but I will say that Destiny 2 is a pretty good place to hang out right now, with a ton of stuff to do, a challenging new mode, and some tongue-in-cheek grinding to see you through to 2019.

I’ll be back as soon as possible with a report on the final Forge, the Niobe Lab, the Last Word Exotic Quest, and, hopefully, the new Raid.

Happy Dawning, Guardians. Keep those eyes up.

Christmas is a wonderful time. You “Bah, humbugs” out there can argue all you want, but you can’t dampen the Christmas spirit here at Godisageek. The latest expansion for Destiny 2, The Black Armory, has recently dropped, bringing with it a handful of changes, some new gear and some new events, including the festive yuletide extravaganza, The Dawning. Okay, “extravaganza” is a stretch, but it’s still a pretty cool event and one that most people will agree captures the gleeful spirit of Christmas while still giving us stuff to grind for.

A major element to this year’s Dawning is the return of Eva Levantes, the NPC who used to sell Shaders and Emblems in Destiny 1. Where she’s been we might never know, but she’s back now – and she came to bake. Visiting her in the Tower will grant you Eva’s Holiday Oven, a new crafting device that lets you bake festive treats for the NPCs in exchange for gear (mostly blue, boo!) and materials. But, her oven also rewards you with the new Dawning Sparrow, if you know how to use it. Once you’ve made 12 different treats, including snacks for Zavala, Amanda and Shaxx, you can grind the hell out of ingredients to unlock all the perks on the Sparrow, including one that sprays Glimmer everywhere when you boost.

Essentially you farm ingredients through various activities, then combine them in the oven to bake the treats. There are 17 recipes to find, and we’ve listed them all here, along with where to find the ingredients.

COMMON INGREDIENTS:

Essence of the Dawning: This drops from all Public Events, Strikes, Lost Sectors, Crucible and Gambit matches, and Patrols. You will need 15 per recipe, until you’ve baked 12 different treats, at which point you can Masterwork your oven reducing the requirement to 10
Ether Cane: Dropped from Fallen enemies, the best place to farm these is the Tangled Shore
Dark Ether Cane: The Scorn carry these, so again, head to the Tangled Shore for an easy life
Vex Milk: Quite obviously, this is the white fluid that may or may not house the collective Vex consciousness. And you want to cook with it. Anyway, head to Nessus to find large clusters of Vex
Taken Butter: The name of this one is almost as disturbing as Vex Milk, but this drops from the Taken. Io is the best option here.
Cabal Oil: Again, not a particularly appetising name, but I farmed this from Cabal in Sorik’s Cut on the Tangled Shore
Chitin Powder: This drops from the Hive, and the best place for huge numbers of this enemy is Mars, during an Escalation Protocol

RARE INGREDIENTS:

Bullet Spray: Get Heavy Machine Gun, Submachine Gun, or Auto Rifle kills on any enemy
Delicious Explosion: Get Grenade, Grenade Launcher, or Rocket Launcher kills on any enemy
Sharp Flavor: Get Sword kills on any enemy
Personal Touch: Score melee kills on any enemy
Perfect Taste: Score precision kills on any enemy
Electric Flavor: Score Arc kills on any enemy
Impossible Heat: Score Solar kills on any enemy
Null Taste: Score Void kills on any enemy
Flash of Inspiration: Spawn Orbs of Light

RECIPES:

Vanilla Blades for Lord Shaxx: Cabal Oil, Sharp Flavor, Essence of the Dawning (this is required to unlock the Sparrow)
Chocolate Ship Cookies for Amanda Holliday: Cabal Oil, Null Taste, Essence of the Dawning (this is required to unlock the Sparrow)
Gjallardoodles for Zavala: Ether Cane, Delicious Explosion, Essence of the Dawning (this is required to unlock the Sparrow)
Traveller Donut Holes for Ikora Rey: Cabal Oil, Flash of Inspiration, Essence of the Dawning
Eliksni Birdseed for Hawthorne: Ether Cane, Personal Touch, Essence of the Dawning
Dark Chocolate Motes for the Drifter: Taken Butter, Null Taste, Essence of the Dawning
Telemetry Tapioca for Banshee-44: Vex Milk, Bullet Spray, Essence of the Dawning
Burnt Edge Transits for Master Rahool: Mix any two ingredients that don’t produce a treat, and add Essence of the Dawning. Note that you must do this before you Masterwork the oven or it doesn’t work.
Candy Dead Ghosts for Spider: Dark Ether Cane, Flash of Inspiration, Essence of the Dawning
Gentleman’s Shortbread for Devrim Kay: Ether Cane, Perfect Taste, Essence of the Dawning
Infinite Forest Cake for Failsafe: Vex Milk, Impossible Heat, Essence of the Dawning
Radialorian Pudding for Asher Mir: Vex Milk, Electric Flavor, Essence of the Dawning
Ill-Fortune Cookies for Petra Venj: Dark Ether Cane, Impossible Heat, Essence of the Dawning
Alkane Cookies for Sloane: Chitin Powder, Bullet Spray, Essence of the Dawning
Javelin Mooncakes for Ana Bray: Chitin Powder, Sharp Flavor, Essence of the Dawning
Strange Cookies for Xur: Taken Butter, Electrical Flavour, Essence of the Dawning

Welcome back, folks. It’s a quiet one this week, but that’s for a very good reason. Season 4, AKA Season of the Outlaw, is drawing to a close. That means you have but one week left to finish up your S4 specific Triumphs, as well as your rankings for Gambit, Crucible and Nightfall.

Season of the Forge begins on November 27th, followed by Black Armory, a DLC about a clandestine order of weaponsmiths, on December 4th. Even with details about the new DLC fairly thin on the ground, we’re still pretty excited, because there are lot of quality of life improvements coming, including changes to load times (Nine be praised!). We’re also getting a new old weapon class when heavy machineguns are reintroduced. Does this mean my Zombie Apocalypse FTW will return? Who knows? Bungie are telling us most of jack-shit right now, although this week’s TWAB should shed a little light on what’s coming up. We know there’ll be new gear, collections, triumphs and events, and we know that for the first time Bungie will be focusing on new weapon types and hybrids thanks to the Black Armory. I’m not expecting new weapon classes, but I am expecting more weird shit like Tractor Cannon, Coldheart, Wardcliff Coil and The Swarm. Bungie have already demonstrated imagination where weaponry is concerned and I’m hoping TBA pushes the boat out.

This new DLC is being co-developed by Vicarious Visions who worked on Warmind, which may be good or bad depending on your standpoint. I liked some parts of Warmind: I liked Ana Bray, returning to Mars and Escalation Protocol. I didn’t like the tiny, lacklustre story and lack of real monetary value. Still, I kind of think Vicarious Visions will nail this one.

During Season 5, we’ll also be taking part in the Dawning festival, which itself will bring some novelty quests, new gear and limited time events. This is a Christmas-themed event and should hopefully be a little more lighthearted than recent offerings. Don’t get me wrong, I like Destiny when it’s dark, but a little levity goes a long way.

So, to reiterate, Season of the Forge follows Season of the Outlaw, but will in turn be succeeded in Spring 2019 by the Season of the Drifter, in expansion Jokers Wild, which will not only explore the Drifters shady backstory, but will make significant changes to Gambit, including the introduction of new modes and Gambit-specific quests. I love Gambit mode, so any additions to it are welcome, especially if they give the mode greater legs. The Drifter, too, is a solid addition to the game’s cast, offering a replacement for Cayde-6 who’s as interesting, if not as likeable, as the fallen hero. Will they ever elect a new Hunter Vanguard? We’ll see.

Looking even further forward, year two will go out with Season of the Shadow and a DLC called Penumbra, which Bungie are describing as a “mystery box” of content which they want players to figure out for themselves. There have always been hidden quests, Easter eggs and secrets in Destiny, and an entire DLC based on the idea has me excited. There will be a Destiny vid doc going up on Bungie.net soon, detailing some of the upcoming changes.

News that Activision aren’t happy with Forsaken’s performance is worrying, but let’s be honest: no one was expecting Bungie to turn Destiny 2 around like they did. In fact, I think most people were absolutely expecting Forsaken to underperform. If only we didn’t have to base everything on sales figures, eh? Because frankly, Bungie have really upped their game since September, and it’s a great thing to see. Destiny 2 is now the game it always should have been, and this roadmap only gets us more hyped up.

So get grinding, guys and gals. Hit Gambit, rinse the Crucible, play your hearts out, and get ready to bid farewell to the Season of the Outlaw. Here’s to the Forge, and the future.

Until next Season, eyes up, Guardians.

For those of you who’ve missed the recent drama, here’s a recap: Blizzard announced the new Diablo game last week at BlizzCon. Not only is it not Diablo IV, it’s a mobile game called Diablo Immortal, news that sent a vast number of Diablo fans into something approaching apoplectic rage. It comes on the back of an otherwise successful launch of Diablo 3 on the Nintendo Switch.

I’ve been playing a lot of the Eternal Collection on Switch, so naturally I’ve been thinking a lot about the Diablo Immortal reveal. Is it necessarily a bad thing? Do Blizzard deserve all the hate? Will it really impact our lives on a meteoric scale? Probably not, to all three.

Here are my thoughts. Let us know yours.

Welcome back, folks. There’s not a whole lot to talk about this week, but you’ll be pleased to know that I did manage to get the Horror Story Auto-Rifle before the Festival of the Lost ended and Amanda Holliday went back to being very pretty furniture. It’s a beast of a gun, and replaced my Hazard of the Cast instantly.

The Festival is gone now for another year, but we still have a new expansion and the Dawning to look forward to in 2018 alone. While it’s mostly business as usual this week, something odd has appeared in Tess’ emporium.

As I rocked up to the Eververse store this week, I was surprised to see a new tab beside the Prismatic Matrix. This so-called “Temporal Surge” offers a chance to buy old Season emotes in exchange for Silver. Which, frankly, sucks.

Look I get people want Bungie to mix the older stuff in because there things people missed, especially late adopters who joined in on September 4th, but why only sell these things for raw Silver? What we really want is for Bungie to revamp old Season gear to roll with the same perks as S4 drops and run it all back into the loot table. Right now, anyone who started playing or returned at the launch of Forsaken has a chance of dropping pieces of useless shit from Faction Engrams, some of which looks fucking cool. I like the Wildwood duds for the Hunter, for example, but I’m not going to wear gear with no perks that I have to infuse all to hell before its even viable. This is an easy cosmetic fix, and it needs doing.

Anyway, with that off my chest, what’s going on this week? Aside the usual, mostly jack shit, but then the usual is still pretty hot. Weirdly I’m not getting Exotic drops at all anymore. Haven’t had one since way before the Festival of the Lost, but I have been lucky with Prime Engrams and useful rewards, so my Power Level is still steadily climbing. I can’t complain much about Exotic drop rates, because they’re at least meaningful now. Also, the newest update fixed it so we’ll get fewer dupes, which is aces.

In other news, there’s a new quest step to get your hands on the Thunderlord – er, I mean to solve Master Ives’ murder. This time it takes you through 4 Lost Sectors in the EDZ, which is a bit by the numbers but at least it’s easy. Once they’re all done (you only have to loot them), you’ll be told you’ve got to wait for the next set of coordinates hahahaha. The quest so far has been a bit meh, to be honest, so I’m hoping that the final part – allegedly taking place in the Cosmodrome – will rock much harder.

And that’s about all there is for this week. As always the reset brings a new Ascendant Challenge (this week is number 4 on the cycle, the Keep of Honed Edges) and a new Nightfall Strike.

So until next week, eyes up, Guardians.

Poor old Master Ives. He was the dour, dull yin to Master Rahool’s dour, dull yang, Cryptarch of the Reef and one-time System-Wide Elvis Impersonator Champion. Okay, I made that last bit up but it’s hard enough to make anyone care about Ives as it is. We haven’t seen the baldy mood-killer since Destiny 1, and now he’s dead.

Luckily for us mercenary bastards, though, his death forms the catalyst for a quest that brings back one of the best guns in Destiny history: the Thunderlord Heavy Machine Gun. Having HMGs return is pretty exciting, as the closest we’ve got currently is the Exotic Auto-Rifle, Sweet Business. You can pick up the quest from Amanda Holliday, and the first step is to collect ten missing pages from Ives’ diary. They are hidden inside Legendary and Exotic engrams, or can drop from high-level Fallen enemies in the EDZ. The easiest way to grab them is to simply throw 250 Legendary Shards at Rahool and decrypt 10 of his engrams, but what’s the fun in that?

Anyway, I’m sure it will be worth doing, as the Thunderlord was a beast in days of old, spitting out lightning and thunder and decimating whole fields of enemies. Be aware that this is only the first step, and step two won’t unlock until next week’s reset (with the final part unlocking the week after). I will say, though, that if we’ve got Thunderlord back I also want Zombie Apocalypse FTW to return. I loved that monstrosity.

Master Ives’ passing also marks the final week of the Festival of the Lost, so this is your last chance to earn enough Fragmented Souls to claim the 600-Power AR “Horror Story” from Holliday, and your last chance to grind the Haunted Forest. The event has been a lot of fun this year, and I hope Bungie put similar effort into 2018’s Dawning (which is Christmas in Destiny Land). Of course, we’ve got the Black Armory expansion between now and then, and this might be the first time a new expansion launches before I’m bored of the last one, so kudos to Bungie for that.

They’re also still tweaking the sandbox. This week’s 2.0.5 patch brought a handful of seemingly small yet actually massive changes. First of all, you can now hand in Gunsmith Materials to Banshee-44 in stacks of 25, not 10. This is huge, people, and means I won’t have to avoid visiting the addled old tin-can as much. Elsewhere Masterwork Cores are now “Enhancement Cores” and drop much more often when dismantling Legendary gear. You can also earn them in Spider’s Tier-2 Wanted Bounties and Scrapper Bounties, so yay.

While we’re still waiting for the return of Faction Rallies, there’s good news for Gambit fans as Infamy is currently paying out double and will do until 2nd November. If you’re close to hitting prestige and you’re feeling the pressure of the steadily encroaching Season 5, now’s the time to grab your gun and go look ’em in the eye.

This week’s Nightfall is Hollowed Lair, so jump in with your Clan to make the most of the improved rewards system which will increase your chance of Nightfall-exclusive loot for every run until you get some. Alternatively, the Ascendant Challenge this week is the Shattered Ruins, which is essentially a jumping puzzle through sniper alley. It’s one of the more frustrating ones, but straightforward enough in theory.

And that about does it. There have been some buffs applied to the Malfeasance Exotic handcannon to make it more worthy of the grind to earn it, while Swords will now do more damage in PvE and pick up 12 rounds per brick as opposed to six. Bad news for Sleeper Simulant users though, as the Fusion Rifle so often seen pwning noobs in Gambit now only picks up 2 rounds at a time instead of 4. It still wrecks me more often than not, though. Wait, does that make me a pwned noob!?

Anyway, that’s all for now. Until next week – eyes up, Guardians.

It has been a solid 6 weeks since the launch of Destiny 2: Forsaken, and I think it’s fair to say that Bungie are finally on the right track. There has been a steady stream of content since September 4th, including new Exotic weapon quests, strikes, and challenges. With the Dreaming City on a 3-week cycle and regular daily and weekly bounties, there’s always something new to get into after the Tuesday night reset.

This week in particular is a doozy. Not only is Lord Saladin back to head up the Iron Banner event, we’ve also got the 3-week Halloween palooza, Festival of the Lost, to get our gashers into.

Here’s a quick look at the Festival-themed Eververse inventory this week:

And here’s what’s new:

The Flashpoint Weekly Challenge is on Mars this week, so you’ll need to complete Events there and turn the quest into Ana Bray. You’ll need to complete 4 Heroic Events to get it done, but Escalation Protocol doesn’t seem to count unless you complete at least Tier 2. There’s also no Daily Heroic Story, possibly because there’s a new questline and sort-of new area to plough through instead.

That new area is the Haunted Forest, which is really just the Infinite Forest but at night. Either way, it’s nice to see Bungie utilising the only half-decent thing to come out of Curse of Osiris (not counting Morena Baccharin, obviously). You’ll find the Tower all decked out for the spooky event, and they’ve finally given Amanda Holliday sonething to do by making her the primary quest-giver.

Head to her garage in the hangar and she’ll give you a random Festival mask, which you can then wear when you complete any challenge to receive an “Ephemeral Engram” from Tess. These new Engrams, which are so awarded alongside Steadfast Engrams, contain exclusive Festival rewards, including new shaders, emotes, vehicles and armour.

The questline for the Festival begins on IO with the pillaging of a few Lost Sectors before you head into the Haunted Forest from the Tower, where a new boss rush event sees you attempting to get through as many bosses as possible in a 15-minute time limit. You can upgrade your mask along the way and the further you get, the greater the rewards are. The entire Festival will evolve over the next three weeks, too.

As for the Iron Banner, it’s Control again, but this time the Weekly Bounties will be a little more obtainable and each pays out a Powerful Engram, so yay!

In the meantime, there’s also a new Nightfall and Ascendant Challenge, and as always the Raids have reset ready for your onslaught once more.

The Festival of the Lost highlights again how much effort Bungie are attempting to put into Destiny 2 since Forsaken. Rather than just a lazy novelty quest with some silly masks and shaders, there’s a fair bit of stuff to unlock over the next 3 weeks and you’ve a much higher chance of getting it all without spending a penny on Silver this time round.

The latest patch, which you can read the notes for here, has also introduced a few changes to things like Exotic Engram drops, Masterwork Cores, pursuit tracking, and, of course, the Sleeper Simulant.

I’ll be back next week to give you the lowdown on Week 2.

Until then, eyes up, Guardians.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 is a huge success.

Activision’s recently released Call of Duty, developed by Treyarch, has broken a few records already. Having debuted on October 12 across the globe, it set a record for the biggest day one digital launch in Activision history. Physical sales details aren’t available right now. On the PlayStation side of things, Black Ops 4 set a record for day one digital full game sales on PSN. It is also now the best selling Activision Xbox One game on day one. A few people were skeptical of Black Ops 4 doing well on PC after ditching Steam. Being on Blizzard’s Battle.net was always going to be a good decision and the PC digital sales for Black Ops 4 are double last year’s entry.

Rob Kostich, EVP and GM, Call of Duty commented:

“Black Ops 4 is an incredible game, and the community’s response to it has been amazing. We have shattered multiple digital day one sales records, and the number of people who connected online on day one to play has grown year on year. But probably the most important thing is that the community is having so much fun across Multiplayer, Zombies and Blackout. We are so incredibly thankful for the community’s trust and support. This is just the beginning, it’s going to be an incredible journey with Black Ops 4.”

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 is now available on PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
