It has been announced today on the official PlayStation blog that Housemarque’s roguelike stunner Returnal is coming to PC on February 15. It was already made official that it would be coming this year back in 2022, but thanks to Mikael Haveri from Housemarque’s blog post, we now have a release date.

Some more details were revealed on the blog regarding performance on PC, including Returnal will support ray-tracing shadows as before, however, it will have support for RT reflections as well. NVIDIA DLSS and AMD FSR have also been added, and there’re two new resolutions: Ultrawide at 21:9 and Super Ultrawide 32:9.

3D Audio will also be available with compatible speakers and headphones, along with support for keyboard and mouse, and more customisation options to tailor controls for the player. The news of Returnal on PC is going to make a lot of players happy, and it becomes yet another PlayStation exclusive to make the jump to the platform.

We reviewed Returnal back when it released in 2021, and found it to be one of the best games, and shooters, of the year. We said, “Returnal is an exceptional game. The fluid, graceful movement and satisfying, punchy gunplay combine with a sense of exploration at once both wondrous and morbid, and a drip-fed progression system that makes you feel like you’re always discovering or unlocking something new. Elements that should feel at odds with one another feel effortlessly cohesive thanks to Housemarque’s deft touch and singular vision. Returnal may not appeal to everyone given its relentlessly dark nature and unwavering difficulty, but it’s an absolute must-play for anyone who craves a genuine challenge.”

Another PlayStation exclusive is coming to PC next year, as Housemarque’s third-person roguelike shooter Returnal arrives in early 2023. Announced during The Game Awards, Returnal for PC will be making the jump to PC, with Climax Studios helping to create its arrival for when it releases.

There will be an array of PC-specific tweaks that will be revealed at a later date, as Mikael Haveri at Housemarque revealed in an official PlayStation blog post. “Rest assured that you will be faced with a cutting edge Housemarque challenge, and the bells and whistles are there to support the gameplay experience including the relentless challenge of the Tower of Sisyphus and online co-op mode.

For newcomers to the game, you’ll join Selene on a dark and mysterious planet called Atropos, where she is stuck in a cycle and predicament of cosmic horror scale. Take on ruthless enemies and flurries of bullet-hell waves of projectiles, contrasted against frightening ancient backdrops. The action gameplay at the core of the game reflects the struggle that Selene needs to overcome on her journey to learn more about the situation she is trapped in.”

We reviewed Returnal back in April, 2021, and said, “Returnal is an exceptional game. It was only a matter of time, as it has been announced that The Last of Us Part I is coming to PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store on March 3, 2023. It’s not a huge surprise that PC players will get to play the well-received remake of Joel and Ellie’s adventure across America, but it’s still cool knowing the masterpiece will be arriving on PC next year.

In an official PlayStation blog post, Associate Communications Manager at Naughty Dog Faith Ries said, “We were so honored by the reception of The Last of Us Part I when it debuted on the PS5 earlier this year, and we can’t wait to welcome new and returning players on Joel and Ellie’s unforgettable adventure, newly optimized and enhanced for PC. We’ll have more information about The Last of Us Part I’s PC specs and features closer to release, so please look forward to more ahead of the March launch.”

Game Director Matthew Gallant added, “The development of The Last of Us Part I on PC provided us with an opportunity to open our game in new ways. We learned a lot from the development of Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection on PC earlier this year, and we can’t wait to make The Last of Us Part I at home on the PC as well.”

The Last of Us Part I on PC can now be pre-ordered on both Epic and Steam, and will cost $59.99.

To ensure you can play The Last of Us Part I as soon as it is released on March 3, 2023, you can pre-purchase on both Epic and Steam. By pre-purchasing now, players will gain access to bonus supplements to upgrade their skillsets, and bonus weapon parts to upgrade their arsenal.

“I’m so excited for the new players to journey across America with Joel and Ellie. Not only will they get to experience this beloved story for the first time, but they’ll be playing a game that takes full advantage of modern hardware and incorporates many of the features and improvements we’ve made in the decade since the game was originally released,” said Matthew Gallant.

A sequel to the hugely popular Octopath Traveler has been announced, coming to PS5, PS4, Nintendo Switch, and PC on February 24, 2023. Octopath Traveler II will take place in the fictional world of Solistia, “a land comprising an eastern and western continent divided by the sea.” Large shipping vessels navigate busy sea routes, with the power of steam providing new technologies to the bustling city. The signature visuals return, with HD-2D graphics, retro pixel art, and 3DCG, looking even better than in its predecessor.

Octopath Traveler II will feature eight new travelers hailing from different regions, all with their own origins, motivations, and unique skills, with players exploring the land, uncovering their stories, and using unique talents to aid them along their journey. They’ll all have a set of Path Actions to battle townspeople, obtain items, take others along on their travels, and more. Returning features like the freedom to develop jobs and skills, and the Break and Boost system, will all return for the sequel. New mechanics are also set to feature.

It’s been four years since the original released, but we gave it a solid 8.5, saying, “Octopath Traveler has brought to mind some of my fondest memories of games like Final Fantasy V, Final Fantasy X, Bravely Default, and even a bit of what I played of Romancing SaGa 2. I don’t mention those names lightly and while this is a fantastic JRPG in its own right, it continues to resonate more and more with me as I see how some aspects of my favourite games have been sprinkled in to this game that feels like a love letter to the 16-bit JRPG era but built for the modern era. Octopath Traveler is not only an essential RPG but it is a fantastic reason to buy a Switch if you’ve been craving a meaty JRPG with one of the best soundtracks in gaming and a superb battle system.

The post The Monster Hunter Rise Demo on PC is as tough as you remember on Switch appeared first on GodisaGeek.com.

]]>

With the Monster Hunter Rise Demo coming to PC on Wednesday, October 13, 2021, newcomers to the series will be wondering what exactly to expect. We’ve been playing through the content on PC ahead of the general release, and can give you the lowdown.

What content can you expect in the Monster Hunter Rise demo?

The Monster Hunter Rise demo on PC has the same content as the Switch demo that came out ahead of that format’s launch earlier this year. You can choose to take on three quests, each of which requires you to hunt a specific Monster.

Beginner: Slay a Great Izuchi

Intermediate: Slay a Mizutsune

Advanced: Slay a Magnamalo

As well as these more traditional hunts, you can also do some specific training. The Basic Training Quest will guide you into the main bits and pieces you need to know to start hunting, and so is advisable for new players to the franchise.

The Wyvern Riding Training Quest details this new addition to Monster Hunter Rise, and is useful for those who have played Monster Hunter games before but didn’t get around to Rise on Switch earlier this year.

How difficult is the demo?

Monster Hunter Rise PC Demo Magnamalo

Well, it varies. Obviously, the training missions are fairly easy to complete, and you’ll be learning as you go there. Also, the Beginner hunt for a Great Izuchi is fairly straightforward even for new players. The Intermediate and Advanced hunts though, really take things up a notch.

The main reason for the difficulty is because you’re given standard, early game gear for every quest and both Mizutsune and Magnamalo are later game monsters that pack a punch. As such you’ll find you take a lot of damage from their hits and don’t do as much damage as you can expect to in the main game.

Mizutsune is possible, with a group of capable hunters working together, whereas Magnamalo is nigh on impossible without a well-drilled team who know the game inside out. It doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try it out, but just don’t be disheartened by the difficulty. It won’t be anywhere near as challenging in the main game when you have better gear to go up against the hellfire behemoth.

The Monster Hunter Rise PC demo is available from October 13, 2021.

It gives a look at a new section of the game including Quake City, including dungeon exploration elements, and a jeep driving mini game. There’s an element of Joel and Ellie to it, with a pinch of Zelda thrown in for good measure. All in all looking pretty cool.

The post King’s Bounty II is an enjoyable blend of tactical combat and fantasy storytelling | Hands-on Preview appeared first on GodisaGeek.com.

Merging different genres together can be a dangerous balancing act. In the pursuit of innovation in a relatively flooded games market, some developers can chase uncommon melanges of styles or mechanics. Sometimes it works, and other times it feels like a complicated unwieldy mess. Thankfully after playing through the first 10 hours of King’s Bounty II, 1C’s adventure shows plenty of promise. It boasts tactical, turn-based combat, mixed with branching, narrative storytelling in a lush, fantasy backdrop. And I’m kind of hooked on it.

The story, as far as has been revealed so far, is fairly intriguing. There are reports of an accident at the local Magefactory, and no one knows quite how it happened or why. To make matters worse, pockets of the otherwise lush green landscape have turned a dark black colour. They’re inflicted with something called the Blight, and there’s a sense that something otherworldly might be afoot. It’s up to you to choose from one of three heroes and get to the bottom of it.

King’s Bounty II | Choose your Ideal

Interwoven throughout most of King’s Bounty II is the idea of four principle Ideals, two sets of two opposing views determine your characteristics. You have the Order ideal competing with the Anarchy ideal, and the Power ideal competing with the Finesse ideal. The idea behind it is that as you progress your adventure you’ll come up against situations that can be resolved in one of two ways, from opposing ideals. Once you find out the details of a conspiracy, you may side with Order and report it to the local Guard, or Anarchy and side with a group of assassins. Decisions affect how the cutscenes play out and also impact the story and your options later on.

King’s Bounty II | Choose your Ideal

The four Ideals also permeate into the construct of your character. Choosing to align with resolutions for a particular Ideal will often give you Points against that Ideal. Then as you level up, you get Talent Points to spend on bonuses. However, some bonuses are locked unless you have the required amount of Points in that Ideal. This gave me an interesting internal dilemma. My default is to always be the good guy, so I naturally veered towards the Order Ideal. However, I also found myself wanting the Anarchy bonuses and I felt conflicted. As such, it feels a character with a blend of all four Ideals was the best way to go. But it feels at odds with the system itself and doesn’t easily allow you to focus on one trait during the story.

Tailor your story

And that story is woven in a fresh but also familiar way. A blend of cutscenes, voiced NPC conversations, and text-based filler it strikes a decent balance of pacing with its storytelling. Similar to fantasy greats like Skyrim, the time has been spent on building lore, with notes, scrolls and ancient tomes provided subtext and context for what you’re experiencing. And whilst it isn’t on the scale to Bethesda’s epic, being able to tailor your story involvement is a welcome thing. This freedom to choose the immersion feels like a big plus point for King’s Bounty II. Even just wandering around, NPCs will be having meaningful, voiced conversations which you can completely ignore should you be in a hurry, but it shows the care and attention on offer here.

Tailor your story

As well as the story, and the Ideal mechanic, the other key building block of King’s Bounty II is its turn-based combat. Played out on a hexagonal grid, you position your armies and then take turns dealing damage until only one group is left alive. Various units are differentiated as melee, ranged, and magic users. There are also flying units and even enemies from the Blight itself. Like in most tactical combat situations, you can move and perform an action, such as attack an adjacent hexagon. Each unit also has a unique skill they can perform, like a specialised attack, or a heal ability. As such it’s about how your group works together to defeat what’s in front of you.

Deep, tactical combat

The combat also has a fair bit of depth. Line of sight and verticality also play a part, particularly for ranged combat. Magic also plays a really big role, either through magic users or utilising your hero themselves. As the hero you are commanding the battle, not actually fighting. But once per turn, you can cast a magic spell that you’ve learned, providing you have enough mana. Alternatively, you could use a one-time-use scroll to cast a spell. These different spells are numerous and have different levels that scale as you progress, increasing their potency. They often produce a wide range of effects from burning, to poison, or even slowing down units. It adds to the level of interaction and tactics of each turn.

Tailor your story

But there’s more. Units have their own levels which rank up through experience it gains from defeating other units in battle. Ranking up units makes them stronger, changes their appearance, and sometimes unlocks additional skills for them to use in battle. Each unit is also tied to a specific Ideal. Units from the same Ideal will have better morale when fighting providing a sense of camaraderie on the battlefield. Those with different Ideals won’t fight as well together. With such a large variety of units to choose from, you can customise your battle party for each fight, and keep an infinite number of units in reserve for when they are needed.

It’s all about the money

However in reality during my 10-hour playthrough that wasn’t quite the case. I never really amassed an army big enough to be able to chop and change my units at will. Despite there being plenty of options to recruit new members and lots of different options available to me, I just couldn’t, because of one simple hard truth. I never had enough money.

It’s all about the money

Now the thing is, I’m a bit of a pixel hunter — a completionist — always on the lookout for collectibles. And the same is true in King’s Bounty II. I’m always looking for what’s off the beaten track, as often you find plenty of glowing chests or caches containing gold and valuables. Despite always rummaging in out-of-the-way hedgerows and selling all my treasure and duplicate or worse equipment, money was always seemingly in relatively short supply. And the main reason for that is that death in King’s Bounty is permanent after every battle.

Sorry for your loss

Even if a unit is made up of ten infantry units, and you only lose two of them in the battle, you have to pay to replace those you lost, either at the end of the fight for ease, or when you next return to town. If a whole unit is lost, you need to replace them all. And as you get further into the story, you have opportunities to recruit better units, but the cost was quite prohibitive. Instead, I found myself sticking to largely the same group of five units for the whole adventure because it’s all I could afford.

Losing

Now I’m aware some of this could be because I need to “git gud” on the strategy side of things. And I’ll admit to finding I lost fewer units towards the end than at the start, so maybe that’s true. But I do wonder if newcomers could feel a little strained by their bank balance, especially if they don’t go gold hunting as I did. Or maybe that is simply part of the challenge, and it’s certainly not insurmountable to overcome. Even an average gamer like me was able to proceed just fine.

Much more to come?

With all that said, I have still really enjoyed what I played of King’s Bounty II. The 10 hours flew by, and I was a bit disappointed when I realised I’d done all I could before having to travel to a locked area that will open in the full game. Its combat is deep, as is its Ideal system which is fused into its entire world. The narrative is intriguing and some of the individual missions have been interesting and have some standout moments.

As with all openers, the key will be in how well the experience translates over a longer timeframe. It’s important that the quality and variety sustain themselves throughout the whole adventure. But there’s plenty on display already to fill me with the hope that this could be a really engaging adventure.

It’s that wonderful time of year for game announcements, and today we saw Salt and Sacrifice revealed at the E3 kickoff. The follow up to the critically acclaimed Salt and Sanctuary is coming early next year to PS5 and PC.

“Salt and Sacrifice, the next installment in the million-plus selling soulslike platformer Salt and Sanctuary series from Ska Studios and Devoured Studios, begins the hunt for Mages on PlayStation 5 and PC in Q1 2022.

In Alterstone Kingdom, captured criminals face two choices for their punishment: death or service. Most opt for execution, but a brave few choose to live life in penance as Marked Inquisitors. These wandering wrongdoers hunt wicked Mages, devouring their hearts to prevent them from terrorizing the Kingdom any further.

Customize a Marked Inquisitor’s crime, look, and class. Choose from one of eight starting classes — Highblade, Paladin, Assassin, Cleric, Dualist, Fighter, Ranger, or Sage — then partake in the Magebane Rite. Imbibe the sacred drink, speak the words, and come away from the rite Spellmarked, in a flux state between life and death. Free from mortal fears, the Inquisitors vow to spill the blood of Mages to put an end to their cruelty.

Prepare for each excursion at Pardoner’s Vale, a hub filled with friendly Inquisitors. Set out and roam eerie villages, tomb temples, and swamp kingdoms in single player or drop-in drop-out online co-op. Find clues and track down more than 20 types of Mages, including scorching Pyromancers, toxic Venomancers, and abominable Corpumancers. Wield grappling hooks and pursue them, then slay them in brawler-style side scrolling combat.

Pillage the remains of Mages to craft new equipment with Runic Arts, granting Inquisitors unprecedented new abilities. Search every decrepit corner across multiple maps for powerful melee weapons, deadly ranged weapons, and protective armor and charms. Join multiplayer factions, including the cooperation-focused Dawnlight Order and the player-killing Shroud Alliance.

Ska Studios brings back its signature hand-drawn look, providing each candlelit cave and foggy forest with a personal feel. The expansive Bestiary features more than 100 monsters, many inspired by Scandinavian folklore. James Silva’s haunting score injects a sense of foreboding throughout the entire journey.

Salt and Sacrifice will be available for PlayStation 5 and PC for USD $19.99 Q1 2022 in English, French, Italian, German, Spanish and Portuguese.”

The original game in the Salt series was almost universally loved, and the announcement of a sequel was a big surprise. Hopefully this is the first of many big reveals we get over the coming weeks.

Chaos Wastes incorporates the rogue-lite genre superbly into Warhammer: Vermintide 2 | Hands-on preview https://www.godisageek.com/2021/04/chaos-wastes-incorporates-the-rogue-lite-genre-superbly-into-warhammer-vermintide-2-hands-on-preview/ Fri, 16 Apr 2021 20:00:22 +0000 https://www.godisageek.com/?p=248722 To the end

The post Chaos Wastes incorporates the rogue-lite genre superbly into Warhammer: Vermintide 2 | Hands-on preview appeared first on GodisaGeek.com.

]]>

The barbaric co-op multiplayer Warhammer: Vermintide 2 is action at its finest. Heading into the fantasy world of Warhammer as one of the heroes of Ubersreik is cool on its own. However, when that includes waves of monsters and buckets of gore, everyone’s in for a good time. The upcoming free DLC offers a slightly different approach to what has come before. Chaos Wastes is a rogue-lite adventure that gets the genre right, all while maintaining the slaughterhouse fantasy fun that’s made the game so popular. We were given hands-on with the new DLC, and the fact its free is insane.

Entering the Chaos Wastes is easy. Just head through the door in the hub area and the new environments are ready to explore. What makes the mode enjoyable is just how well it weaves the rogue-lite elements into it. Jewellery, Charms, and Trinkets are worthless in the Chaos Wastes. Instead, each location will offer Altars where you can spend a currency called Pilgrim Coins. They can be collected from downed bosses and supply chests. Once stockpiled, they can be spent on different Altars for improvements to gear and skills. Warrior Altars allow the tempering of weapons; Hunter Altars provide swaps for a more powerful weapon; and Seers Altars offer boons to your character, such as an improvement to your movement speed.

Chaos Wastes: Risk and reward

These features give heroes the tools needed to continue fighting through the Chaos Wastes. As well as the Altars, boons and miracles are dished out for finishing the levels, and finding Chests of Trials also provide buffs to fighters. Think of Cursed Chests in Diablo 3. Once activated, these chests spawn a boss followed by a horde. All you really need to do is defeat the boss, but it’s impossible to pick something with tens of Skaven’s still swarming around. Once the area is cleared, a special enhancement (Rare, Exotic, or Legendary) can be selected as your prize. These can range from an increase of health received when using a healing vial, to firing lightning from my weapon on a critical hit.

Chaos Wastes Skaven

Every one of the 15 new locations are unique because they’re different on every playthrough. Procedurally generated areas filled with different threats, varying Altars, and new paths to explore. Sometimes these will include seldom hordes to fight against. Other times they won’t stop coming and working together becomes integral to survival. One of the greatest things about Vermintide 2 is the combat.. What Chaos Wastes does is push players to the limits the further they get. All improvements and boons can be lost once death comes knocking, and heading all the way back to the beginning is the only option.

Teamwork makes the dream work

Certain areas are cursed by the ruler of the location, meaning enemies can come at you a lot faster. There can also be more Elites and generally a bigger presence of beasts. Whilst some areas are tough to fight through, the rewards are greater. This is where the teamwork comes into play. Deciding on the right course of action before entering every area becomes a familiar method of playing, but success is an almighty feeling in the Chaos Wastes. Along the journey, Shrines can be visited which allow parties to purchase shared miracles that provide bonuses to all players, such as an increase of Pilgrim Coins or an increase in chance of an Elite or Special dropping pickups.

Chaos Wastes Teamwork

The Chaos Wastes plays exactly as it should. Incredible combat, fantastic implementation of the rogue-lite genre, and plenty of diversity in its environments. What makes it that much better is just how good it looks. The new locations are very different. You may be in a snowy mountain range filled with abandoned and dilapidated ship hulls, or a mine that plummets deep underground. There’re ravaged villages, rank sewers, and so much more. The range of enemies is insane. Hordes of Beastmen and Skavers are bad enough, but when they’re wearing armour or firing nitrous flames at you, the challenge to defeat them completely changes. Fat Shark has really pushed the boat out on this update.

Chaos Wastes: A perfect package

Warmhammer: Vermintide 2 has received a healthy injection of change whilst managing to keep hold of the action fans have grown to love. Chaos Wastes uses the rogue-lite genre in familiar and different ways, with a great use of boon and miracles to boost abilities with each playthrough. Having the Altars provides a risk and reward system that’ll have players pondering whether or not to spend Pilgrim Coins is a neat dynamic. All in all, Chaos Wastes is a fine addition to an already excellent title.

If you’re looking to upgrade your PC, ASUS have made an announcement you need to check out. The new GeForce RTX 3060 12 GB Series Graphics Cards feature ray tracing capabilities (if you’re wanting to make Watch Dogs Legion a little prettier) and start at reasonable prices.

“ASUS today announced new ROG Strix, TUF Gaming, and ASUS Dual graphics cards that feature the latest NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 12 GB GPU. The lineup marks an expanded offering of the NVIDIA Ampere architecture, formerly featured in upmarket GPUs, and each graphics card brings out the best of the latest NVIDIA chipset with next-level thermal solutions, enhanced PCBs and robust power designs.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 12 GB GPU

With its efficient, high-performance architecture and the second generation of NVIDIA RTX™ platform, the GeForce® RTX 3060 brings amazing hardware ray-tracing capabilities and support for NVIDIA DLSS and other technologies, and is priced starting at $329.

Like all RTX 30 series GPUs, the RTX 3060 supports the trifecta of GeForce gaming innovations ―

NVIDIA DLSS, NVIDIA Reflex and NVIDIA Broadcast ― which accelerate performance and enhance image quality. Together with real-time ray tracing, these technologies are the foundation of the GeForce gaming platform, which brings unparalleled performance and features to games and gamers everywhere.”

I know plenty of people with money burning a hole in their pocket for PC upgrades, so these graphics cards might be snatched up before you know it. I’m not going to pretend I can afford an upgrade like this any time soon, but maybe a lottery win will make a dream come true!

Valheim feels like a “grown-up” survival game https://www.godisageek.com/2021/02/valheim-feels-like-a-grown-up-survival-game/ Mon, 22 Feb 2021 10:00:22 +0000 https://www.godisageek.com/?p=247026 Ragnarok & roll

The post Valheim feels like a “grown-up” survival game appeared first on GodisaGeek.com.

]]>

One of the best things about Valheim is that it it doesn’t hold your hand, but doesn’t leave you floundering in the dark, either. Although it does leave you stranded in the woods, quite literally, with nothing but your bare hands and some talking ravens for company.

The biggest difference between Valheim and other survival games I’ve played is that it’s not a slog. Remember your first hour in Ark, back in the day? Punching rocks and trees with your fists and trying to make sense of what was going on? Well, maybe partly because of time spent in other games, by the end of my first hour in Valheim I already had a crude dwelling, a cooking station, weaponry and clothing.

And you need to progress fairly quickly, because Valheim pits you not just against the elements and the creatures lurking in the procedurally-generated forest, but against huge mythological beasts that stalk the islands. Periodically, they will hurl the animals and monsters against you, and you’ll need to defend yourself, which creates a loop of desperate fighting and grateful looting as you gather up resources from your slain foes to help improve your gear or habitat.

Valheim

Like other survival games though, Valheim is an uphill battle – it’s just not one that seems constantly stacked against you. There’s something relaxing and bizarrely satisfying about cooking meat you killed on a fire you made in a hut you built, then going for a wander in the early morning to gather up stone and wood and hunt your next lunch.

The build menu needs some work though. Even using mouse and keyboard, I struggled with the precision and placement of certain tiles, and it’s simply not fully optimised for controller yet. The buttons are all over the place and re-assigning them is not as straightforward as it should be. It took me several attempts to get the walls of my hut up and the basic tutorial left me confounded as to how to even place certain components of the building. I got there in the end, though.

Small points of interest litter the starting areas, from standing stones and burned out old dwellings that suggest someone else was here before and either moved on or got stomped by something nasty. Your own central area is equipped with towering monoliths on which to display trophies and offer sacrifices to the gods and spirits of the world, in order to boost your chances of survival.

Valheim

Despite the low-resolution and low-maintenance graphics, there’s a certain charm to a lot of Valheim, but a little more detail and polish on the visuals would go a long way. It’s not exactly “ugly”, but it’s certainly not a pretty or overly colourful game, and it can be difficult to spot wildlife or items of interest against the washed-out terrain. That said, it doesn’t take long to get used to it, or to the janky combat and movement animations.

On the surface, Valheim looks more or less the same as any other survival game of the last five or so years, but the way it pits you immediately against an unbeatable foe and demands that you get stronger or eventually die a weakling gives even the early game some much-needed impetus. It also rewards every stone you overturn, every tree you cut down, and every tiny advancement you make. Once you have a crafting table and work station you’ll be developing new items and tools in quick succession, and the bolder you grow, the further you’ll travel.

Perhaps the most appealing aspect to me is that you can disable PvP completely and suffer no adverse consequences. It’s there if you want it, but you aren’t constantly forced into it with griefers as you are in Ark and Rust. Instead, you have a button you can toggle in the menu that either allows you to fight and be fought, or blocks it. This has already led to the creation of PvP arenas, spaces designed by players using the in-game tools, where they can go to specifically and exclusively partake in PvP. It also means that if you want to be left alone to do your own thing, or just want to play alongside others to build a cooperative community, you can.

Valheim

Having hit 2 million downloads on Steam in early access, Valheim is almost certainly going to stick around and get bigger and better. If Iron Gate AB stick to their current ethos of delivering faster-paced survival with the true freedom of opt-in PvP and community spirit, this could one day be the biggest survival game available. And considering the size of some of the current dominators, that’s no mean feat.

At a time when people are desperate for things to play, the new CrossCode DLC is just what the doctor ordered. A New Home is coming in just over a week to PC (and in the summer for console players) and will add up to 10 hours of gameplay and a host of new challenges to overcome.

“More than two years after its launch CrossCode will receive its long awaited DLC. Today we can finally reveal not only its name but also the date: A New Home will launch on PC on February 26th. The console version will follow this summer.

With A New Home the story of CrossCode will expand even further. The story starts right after the events of the maingame and players will be able to finally figure out what happened to Lea and all their beloved characters. The time has come to once and for all finish the raid. And to give everyone a good feeling of what CrossCode is all about, we have prepared a fresh trailer, showcasing lots and lots of new puzzles, enemies and story snippets.

Features:

Fresh Content which will entertain players for about 8 – 10 hours

The biggest dungeon in the history of CrossCode

New challenging enemies and bossfights

New music tracks

And of course: The final chapter of the Raid.”

CrossCode is an incredible game that I’d absolutely recommend you play right this second if you haven’t already. After giving it a 10 in my review last year, you’d better believe I’ll be jumping into this new content when it comes to console this summer.

The puzzle RPG hybrid is back, as 505 games have announced Puzzle Quest 3 is coming this year. It’s been over a decade since the last Puzzle Quest game, so fortunately we don’t have to wait much longer for another.

“Global video game publisher 505 Games announced today Puzzle Quest 3 (PQ3), an all-new installment to the ground-breaking and highly successful puzzle-RPG franchise. This will be the first official release under 505 Games, following the recent acquisition of Infinity Plus Two, the Australian game development studio and creators of the critically acclaimed Puzzle Quest series, which has generated over $200 million in revenue and amassed an estimated 32 million users globally under the franchise. The team is on track to deliver PQ3 as a multiplatform free-to-play (F2P) title launching later this year.

“After an overwhelming demand from fans over the past decade for the next installment of Puzzle Quest, we’re thrilled to finally reveal the development of Puzzle Quest 3,” said Steve Fawkner, CEO and Creative Lead at Infinity Plus Two. “The vision for this latest project has been years in the making, and like any good Puzzle Quest game, it’s a delicate balance of gameplay, story, and strategic puzzle-solving while introducing something unexpected that will appeal to both old and new fans. We can’t wait to share PQ3.”

Puzzle Quest 3 returns to its origins, recalling the deep RPG mechanics and signature heroic storylines that made the original a standout hit within the Match-3 category. Now featuring a twist on traditional puzzle gameplay, PQ3 offers an intense 1-versus-1 battle system realized in a 3D game world. Taking place 500 years after the original Puzzle Quest, players will embark on a heroic journey across Etheria to discover the meaning behind the ancient Red Dragon’s dying words.

“Puzzle Quest defined the puzzle-RPG genre, creating a beloved franchise with a rich heritage that continues to resonate with a player base of millions globally today. The work that Steve [Fawkner] and his team have done to reintroduce the franchise as a F2P experience across multiple platforms will undoubtedly reinvent the puzzle genre once again. As a unified publishing and dev team, we’ve created a path for the franchise that puts the player first so we can best serve our growing community,” said Clive Robert, Head of Free-to-Play at 505 Games.

Puzzle Quest 3 features an all-new adventure to become the ultimate hero, battling and building a legacy in thrilling head-to-head combat. The game includes an immersive battle system where players unleash torturous spells and paralyzing attacks through the power of gem-crushing in an enhanced turn-based system. Puzzle Quest 3 once again pushes the genre limits by introducing new and imaginative gameplay mechanics. The game will be available to fans worldwide, across a wide variety of mobile devices and PC later this year, with additional platforms to be announced.”

There isn’t a match 3 game in existence I’ve played more than Puzzle Quest, so I really hope this new free to play game lives up to the original. After pumping so many hours into Grindstone, I need a new puzzle game to sink my teeth into.

Seacorp Technologies has today announced that the physics-based racer Kinetic Edge will be releasing February 5 on Steam for PC. The game sees you control a variety of shapes and objects to complete multiple game modes and challenges in single-player and multiplayer.

Kinetic Edge is a compendium of different games but, in truth, all have the same core: It’s like crazy golf meets Tron,” says founder Richard Seabrook. “The game finds that brilliant sweet spot between being a perfect package of fun for those wanting to play with their friends, but also serving as an addictive set of challenges for single players as well.”

Kinetic Edge will have many features including:

 • Kinetic Race – Race with friends to get the best time or against others online.
 • Kinetic Arena – Knockout other players to make them lose points and stay in the green zone for maximum points gain.
 • Kinetic Survival – Increasingly difficult challenges knocking out players, last to remain wins.
 • Kinetic Golf – A physics crazy golf game you can play with friends.
 • Kinetic Maze – A procedurally generated level that constantly changes. Currently, there are three types of maze varying in size; 10×10 20×20 and 50×50. Maze’s are colour coded and have a distance meter to help out but you will have to navigate it to find the exit. Be sure not to follow the wrong friend because they can lead you to a dead-end!
 • Kinetic Gauntlet Single-Player & Multi-Player – Can you complete the gauntlet? Seven minutes, one life, and no checkpoints. The Gauntlet is a super hard level that will test your abilities to the max within Kinetic Edge. Gauntlet also comes with Gauntlet training mode with multiple checkpoints and a slower pace for you to practice before the real deal.

There will be more announcements over the next month regarding new modes and features, but for now you can check out the brand new trailer here:

With the release of the excellent Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War came with it the promise of much more content down the line. This week marked the first with Nuketown ’84 – with some new weapons and double XP to celebrate.

Nuketown itself has been given a post-nuclear coat of paint with cracked buildings, DIY paths and plenty of fire. The trailer down below introduces it perfectly contrasting that psychedelic inspired art with the crumbling foundation around it. Not only this, there appear to be a few more changes made this time around with new paths for the RCXD and a clock tower counting down the map time.

The layout is ever so slightly different and is designed as a “sister site to the original nuketown” tweeted:

creative specialist Miles Leslie. This is done to fit that balance in years between the singleplayer in 1981 and the multiplayer in 1983. Making it the original Nuketwon might constrain it somewhat so this allowed them to get creative. Its been abandoned for over thirty years and the aesthetic shows that.

Moving from here, there are also 6 charms, an emblem, calling card, sticker and weapon blueprint available to current owners of the game. With the number of weapons already available in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War and the time it might take you to unlock anything for the Huaer 77 shotgun, this is a welcome addition. Starting November 24th, double XP should get you there even faster.

As always, this map hides a sneaky easter egg too. Shoot the heads off all the mannequins for a nice surprise. Doing so activates a retro filter complete with a black and purple sky. You might want to keep an ear out for that addictive synthwave music too.

This is all available right now so hop in and get shooting.

]]>

This week in cowboy news, new Legendary Rams arrive in Red Dead Online. If you’re feeling the need to hunt a wooly foe, or fancy finding some fossils, this latest update could be worth you jumping into the Red Dead Redemption 2 multiplayer mode.

“This week brings new clothing, discounts and a Daily Challenge bonus to all, while a wide assortment of additions come to players on Xbox One, PC and Stadia.

There are three new varieties of Legendary Ram who’ve made their way to the Xbox One, PC and Stadia: the Gabbro Horn Ram, a black and white specimen seen traversing the dry terrain of Rio Bravo; the gray Chalk Horn Ram, spotted in the heights of the Grizzly Mountains, east of the Calumet Ravine; and the Rutile Horn Ram with its dark red horns, seen roaming both Rio Bravo and Cholla Springs. Visit Harriet to launch the Rutile Ram Sighting Mission and complete it to get a free Poncho of your choice.

Collectors can dig up three new Fossil Collections on Xbox One, PC and Stadia – Coastal, Oceanic and Megafauna alike – scattered and buried all across the frontier. Speak to Madam Nazar to pick up a Fossils Map, plus a Pennington Field Shovel and Metal Detector, if not already part of your repertoire. And any amateur archaeologist who collects a single Fossil this week will receive a Tarot Card, Lost Jewelry and Arrowhead”

Can you really call yourself an Outlaw if you haven’t taken down a legendary Ram and made a poncho out of its body? Red Dead Online continues to add new content constantly, and I know a lot of people who keep going back for some cowboy action. If Rams don’t get you interested in trying the open world online game, I just don’t know what will.

Focus Home Interactive and Lightbulb Crew have dropped some a new video showcasing their upcoming strategy horror game. The new Othercide gameplay overview trailer shows off the game’s brutal tactical combat, and I can’t way to jump in.

“Othercide debuts on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC in under two weeks on July 28th, and later this summer on Nintendo Switch. As Humanity’s last hope, lead your army of Daughters to combat in an intricate dance of spectacular actions and counters, and face fearsome bosses in epic battles. Today’s Othercide gameplay trailer shows off exclusive footage, taking a deep dive into the tactical combat and progression systems that make up this dark indie gem.

In Othercide, the unique Dynamic Timeline System is at the core of every battle. Rather than simply controlling where and what your units do, you will also manipulate when things happen. This can be used in many ways, from interrupting an enemy attack before it even occurs, to unleashing a devastating series of combos. Death will inevitably take you. Healing Daughters requires the sacrifice of another, and your forces cannot withstand the onslaught of Suffering forever. However, there is hope: each failed run opens up new game-changing abilities, options and opportunities for the next attempt.”

Othercide is looking to end an already packed July with a bang. Horror and strategy don’t often meet, so I hope Lightbulb Crew are able to pull this genre mashup off.

Fans of horrific demons and tactical gameplay have something to look forward to next month, as Othercide releases July 28th on PC and console. Focus Home Interactive and Lightbulb Crew dropped this jaw dropping release date trailer today, which is a must watch.

“Descend into Humanity’s last hope. The Daughters, echoes of the greatest warrior to ever live, are all who stand before Suffering and death. Lead your army to battle with all the skill you can muster. Your prowess in combat will decide their fate, shape their abilities and personality. Make the toughest decision and sacrifice one to heal another – survivors will get stronger, ready to fight the next battle.”

Combat is an intricate dance of spectacular actions and counters: plan ahead of time and set up impressive chains of abilities to outsmart the enemy using the Dynamic Timeline System. Fight in epic boss battles against the sources of Suffering – dread creatures pulled from the worst of Humanity’s crimes against itself.”

There have been a lot of great strategy games in recent months (Desperados III and Gears Tactics have surpassed all expectations) but none are quite as breathtakingly gorgeous as Othercide looks. Horror and tactical RPG gameplay don’t often mix, abd I can’t wait to try the game for myself this July.

Xbox had a great indie game showing on day two of the Guerrilla Collective. As part of this selection, it was announced that Welcome to Elk is coming to Xbox One. This surreal mini game adventure is based on real life stories, and was definitely a highlight of the show.

“Welcome to Elk is a biographical adventure set on an island like no other, where every character you encounter has a story to tell. From the weird and wonderful to the dark and desperate, all the tales told on Elk are based on true stories of life on the road less traveled.

You play as Frigg, a young carpenter traveling to Elk for an apprenticeship. She is used to an outgoing and hectic lifestyle in the city. How will she handle the isolated life on Elk with only few young people around her and no internet?

On Elk, Frigg and you will meet the weird and wonderful characters – people whom the world has either ignored or forgotten. Follow their ups and downs, their odd drinking rituals and their unique ways of tackling whatever life throws at them. Here it’s known that humour, love and death go hand in hand. Life may seem hard sometimes, but it is always followed by laughter.

We value the importance of storytellers, those who carry the tales of others and share them. That’s why, in Elk, you will also meet the living storytellers who inspired us to make this game.”

The use of mini games as storytelling is a great hook, and one that I don’t think I’ve seen outside of What Remains of Edith Finch. This alongside the striking art style, I’ll definitely be jumping in as soon as possible. We’ll all get to discover this surreal world ourself soon, when Welcome to Elk releases later this year.

London based indie developers, Glitchers, are releasing a new vehicle combat game Drive Buy. Famed for Sea Hero Quest VR, Drive Buy is a mix of similar vehicle based games like Crazy Taxi, Twisted Metal and Mario Kart.

Drive Buy comes with cross platform play for Switch and PC players. So you won’t need to worry about you and friends having copies on the same platform. Online play also supports up to 4 players online.

When you dive in for an offline or online game you’ll be greeted by the following three game modes:

Delivery Battle

Be the first to make your drop offs and rack up the highest score

PayDay

Hold onto the most coins while trying to avoid power ups from all directions

Piggy Bank

The longer you hold the pig the more points you score. However everyone will be gunning for the pig so you’ll need to avoid other players.

Along with the above game modes you’ll have 6 characters and vehicles with unlockable cosmetic items for every character.

“Playing LAN matches with my dad and brother were some of the highlights of my childhood, moments that I found it increasingly difficult to recreate as the ecosystem of console became so complicated, so when cross-play became a reality, I wanted to get make a game which fully exploited its potential for fun” commented Max Scott-Slade, co-founder of Glitchers.

“At its heart, Drive-Buy is a vehicle-based party game with intuitive, pick up & play controls, we wanted to create an experience which avoids the frustration of track-based racing games – hence a street-based delivery battler was created!” added Hugo Scott-Slade, co-founder “We want everyone to be in with a chance of winning – so even the player in last position can turn it around and steal a last minute victory. Or they can flood the leader’s screen with emotes and emojies to get revenge”

Drive Buy will be heading to PC and Switch in July 2020.

The post Old World is a new strategy title that really makes you think appeared first on GodisaGeek.com.

]]>

The strategy genre has been around for decades now, and sometimes it can be hard to imagine where it goes next. The 4X sub-genre has been through a lot, from the early days of Civilization and Age of Empires right through to the impressive Total War franchise. Comparisons are always made in new strategy titles to those previous stalwarts, and the same is true of new entry Old World as it enters Early Access on PC. With Soren Johnson, Lead Designer from Civilization IV at the helm, these reflections are even more justified. What is clear straight away is that whilst Old World is all about ancient history, it’s keen to frame itself as something new in a crowded genre.

The initial premise is one you’ve seen many times before. You take control of one of the main empires of history, from the Greeks, to the Romans to the Egyptians, and try and replicate their rise to supremacy. Delaying their inevitable downfalls for as long as possible might not be a bad idea either. But in a similar way to Total War: Three Kingdoms, the focus is very much on you as an individual, and the choices you make. These will not only affect the future for you and your family but also your chances for prosperity for your future empire.

Firstly, you’ll be established as a main character from your chosen empire’s history. You’ll have a wife, and likely before long a child to call your own. Over the passage of time, you’ll be able to make decisions affecting your family, ranging from your child’s education and development, to potential nights of infidelity with unnamed members of your court. Your decisions always have consequences, sometimes this can affect whether your relationship or opinion rating from other family members flourishes or takes a hit.

But like with most things in Old World, it goes deeper than that. Your decisions really affect how everyone perceives you, including leaders of other empires and that can bode well or ill for you depending on how you manage it. Also different decisions can affect how the general population feels towards you too. You may be viewed as bold or bitter for example depending on decisions, and these traits can affect the productivity of your towns and cities, granting you bonuses or restrictions. This adds significant weight to some of the choices you need to take outside of the normal strategy management.

And there’s more than meets the eye to the management side too. There’s your familiar quantities of food and stone to manage to keep your people alive and structures maintained. You can also mine iron to help with weapon production for your militia. But aside from physical resources you’ll also be juggling other metrics that support your kingdom. You’ll manage Science to support your research, Culture to build Wonders and even a Training metric to upgrade your fighting units. It all adds a significant level of complexity to proceedings that can sometimes be missing from other strategy titles.

The other main difference in Old World is how time passes. Each turn represents a year of your empire. And your life is finite, so it’s important to make the most of it. As you get older, and eventually die or rescind command, your heir will take over. So it is important the decisions you took in their upbringing and how it affected their traits and perception. You’ll also spend your lifetime building your Renown across the land by achieving feats and goals you set yourself. It will then be up to those who come after you to continue the legacy you began.

But aside from your individual lifespan, that yearly passage of time is integral to the main strategy sim gameplay. Everything takes a matter of years to produce, which in this case is turns. There’s no instant-build button, so every building or upgrade you begin is a time commitment, making the decision bear more weight. And your options are limited to the number of units at your disposal. A Worker can build additional buildings, either rural ones like farms and mines, or urban alternatives such as libraries or barracks. Settlers travel off to other city sites and establish a new city to broaden your reach. The various militia units can attack enemy strongholds to weaken your enemy, and Scouts can traverse the map, identifying threats or harvesting materials from the land to add to your collective pool.

Any unit requires a certain number of Orders to complete an action – another type of currency. These are regenerated each turn and control how flexible you can be each year. Certain decisions and buildings can also affect your Order regeneration rate. So it’ll be up to you to figure out the best use of your units in a given year. Is it better to concentrate on improving your cities, or expanding to new areas, and potentially fighting off enemy units? New units can be created at city centres, but each of these take numerous years to develop, and so there’s never an instant solution.

Whilst some of these mechanics are explained during various tutorial stages during the first few turns of play, some of it isn’t. Old World takes more of a back seat when it comes to explaining itself, instead choosing to rely on your curiosity as a player. Hovering over a unit, resource or building will offer more insight to what’s happening, and there’s a literal encyclopedia of knowledge off the main menu of the game should you need further clarification on things. It rewards those who want to understand it’s layers and nuances, and how all of the choices you make have a real impact.

And that really is the crux of how Old World is to play. By having a lot of different metrics to juggle, a progression system that takes time to develop and purposeful choices, means it really makes you think. Everything you do carries weight, either for your empire right now, or how it might struggle or flourish in the future. If you focus on expansion instead of shoring up your military you could find yourself unstuck. Similarly if you don’t recruit enough Settlers, the enemy could tap up all the City Sites and you’re left languishing behind.

Often in strategy titles you can find a quick fix to get you out of a bind. Whether it’s rapidly creating additional military units or investing in a certain resource that you’re running low on. Old World doesn’t afford you that luxury. It requires you, well, to be more strategic than in other strategy games, because how you go about things has a long-term impact. And that makes Old World feel incredibly new and fascinating despite being a well-trodden genre in a familiar setting. It’s well thought through, reasonably well-executed, and is definitely one to keep an eye on as it progresses through its Early Access phase.

After announcing a surprise sequel in January, Perfect World & Echtra Games have revealed Player forts coming to Torchlight III. These upgradable and customisable bases will help power up your character, and add your own flair to the world.

“Perfect World Entertainment and Echtra Games are excited to share a first look at the new Forts system in Torchlight III, the highly anticipated successor to the beloved Torchlight series. While the upcoming ARPG builds on the familiar hack’n’slash combat and mechanics fans loved about the original series, it also includes brand new features for adventurers to explore, starting with the introduction of Forts. When Torchlight III releases on PC later this year, players will have the opportunity to build and customize their very own fortress on the frontier. Forts allow each adventurer to leave their personal mark on the world, as these structures can be personalized and adorned with treasures that have been crafted or earned through combat. Forts also serve as an important hub where players can meet up with friends, progress their characters, plus swap out skills and entire armor sets.”

After a great port of Torchlight 2 on the Switch, I’m sure there are plenty of people excited for the next game in the series. If you haven’t spent enough time on home design in Animal Crossing this year, then Torchlight III has you covered.

For fans of Sega Mega Drive beat-em-ups, the time has finally come. With the last game releasing in 1994, the long awaited sequel Streets of Rage 4 is coming April 30th. It launches on Xbox GamePass for users of the service, and will also be available on PS4, Switch and PC.

“Streets of Rage 4 is the franchise’s first mainline entry in more than 25 years, reuniting Axel, Blaze, and Adam while introducing fresh fighters and combat depth, an arrestingly fluid hand-drawn art style, and an all-new scenario as well as city boroughs to crack skulls in. With an original soundtrack from Olivier Derivière incorporating worldwide talent, including massive contributions from series composers Yūzō Koshiro and Motohiro Kawashima, Streets of Rage 4’s pairing of classic elements with distinctive modern direction makes this highly anticipated return the fight of a lifetime.”

The beat-em-up genre gets ignored far too often, so the return of Streets of Rage is going to make a lot of people happy. After all the characters were revealed, it was only a matter of time before we got a release date. I still have the original trilogy installed on my Xbox One, and I think I’ll be installing the 4th game later this month.

The post 2K announce XCOM: Chimera Squad, coming to PC April 24 appeared first on GodisaGeek.com.

]]>

Today, 2K and Firaxis have announced that a brand new standalone XCOM game, XCOM: Chimera Squad, is coming to PC on April 24, 2020. What’s even better, the game will be available for £8.50 upon release, up until 10am PDT on May 7, 2020, but check Steam for more details. From May 1, it will be sold at its RRP of £16.99, however, the limited-time reduction will still be available until the date mentioned..

The official synopsis for the game reads:

Set five years after the events of XCOM 2, humans, hybrids and aliens are now working together to forge a civilisation of cooperation and co-existence. However, not all of Earth’s inhabitants support the interspecies alliance. City 31, a model of peace in a post-invasion world, is opposed by mysterious groups whose agendas threaten to shatter this delicate interspecies alliance. Chimera Squad, an elite force of human, hybrid and alien agents, must work together to destroy the underground threats driving the city toward chaos.

“We’re inspired by our passionate community and excited by the opportunity to create a dynamic, innovative, and unique XCOM experience for both fans of our games and new players in XCOM: Chimera Squad,” said Steve Martin, President at Firaxis Games.

“With XCOM: Chimera Squad, we felt there were exciting gameplay opportunities yet to be discovered within the XCOM universe,” said Mark Nauta, Lead Designer at Firaxis Games. “Gameplay like Breach Mode, interleaved turn order, and the introduction of agents as fully fleshed-out characters will revolutionize how the game plays while still retaining the combat experience that makes the XCOM series so loved by gaming communities around the world.”

“We know fans have been eager to dive back into the world of XCOM,” said Melissa Bell, Senior Vice President and Head of Global Marketing at 2K. “XCOM: Chimera Squad offers tremendous value and we’re intentionally lowering the barriers of entry for new fans to the franchise with a game XCOM veterans will really enjoy.”

XCOM: Chimera Squad has plenty of cool features, and it looks like it could be a fantastic follow-up to the hugely successful XCOM 2. There’ll be unique Alien and Human agents, the new Breach Mode, Specialised and Complimentary Classes, and more. The new features are detailed more below:

• Unique Alien and Human Agents: Each of the 11 agents have their own distinct personality and tactical abilities, including species-specific attacks like the Viper’s tongue pull;
• Specialised and Complementary Classes: Execute devastating combos by teaming the right agents and utilising cooperative actions. The difference between mission success and failure can depend wholly on team composition;
• Re-Envisioned Tactical Combat: Missions are structured as a series of discrete, explosive encounters, keeping the action intense and unpredictable;
• Breach Mode: Players will shape the battlefield to their advantage with a new combat phase that injects squads right into action. They will strategically assign agents to different entry points and coordinate their assault plans with a range of Breach-specific skills;
• Interleaved Turns: An automatic initiative system will slot individual agents and enemies into an alternating turn order, creating new strategic possibilities based on what unit is queued to act next – and what unit is at the greatest risk when they do so;
• Suspenseful Strategy Layer: Outside of combat, players will manage the operations of a high-tech HQ, where they must prioritise competing tasks, investigations and agent assignments in the face of a ticking clock: the constantly rising unrest in the city’s various districts, driving City 31 closer and closer to total anarchy.

If you’re looking to keep up to date with all things XCOM, you can visit the official site, head over to their Facebook page, subscribe to their YouTube channel, or follow them on Twitter and use the hashtag #XCOM.

Finally, if you’re now incredibly hyped for the release, why not watch the official reveal trailer below:

Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord is equal parts frustrating and fun https://www.godisageek.com/2020/04/mount-blade-ii-bannerlord-is-equal-parts-frustrating-and-fun/ https://www.godisageek.com/2020/04/mount-blade-ii-bannerlord-is-equal-parts-frustrating-and-fun/#comments Mon, 13 Apr 2020 14:30:39 +0000 http://www.godisageek.com/?p=235074 A mix of Dragon Age and Total War.

The post Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord is equal parts frustrating and fun appeared first on GodisaGeek.com.

]]>

Like the political and military machinations in the land of Calradia, where Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord is set, answering the simple question of whether this is a game worth your time is, well, complicated. It’s an experience that will both frustrate and entice you. It will make you wince and smile at the same moment. You’ll find yourself whisked off to a medieval fantasy land and then abruptly dumped you back into your own reality. It’s a constant contradiction, a confusing melange of the good and the bad, and I kinda like it, I think.

Trying to take a stab at the genre is the first confusion, with the best description I can pinpoint as a strategy RPG. A kind of unique mix of say Dragon Age and Total War. You are the leader of an up and coming clan, looking to make a name for yourself. You’ll travel Calradia looking for fame and fortune, and spilling a fair amount of blood along the way. The gameplay is split thanks to its diverse genres. In terms of being an RPG, you explore tiny holdfasts, as well as large sprawling cities. You’ll interact with characters, take on quests and choose from various conversation trees. The strategic elements come when you take to the battlefield against warring bandits or larger armies. You control your own character as well as your band of followers, with an array of tactics and commands up your sleeve to use to your advantage

If that initially sounds intriguing, exciting even, then I do have to temper your expectations a little. Because the reality is that both the RPG and Strategy elements feel very basic in their execution. Conversations are almost entirely text conversation trees with barely any emotion displayed in facial expressions or body language. Also, most of your options (except key decisions) have little bearing on the progression of each chat. Wandering around towns should be engaging, but with no map, or indication of where to go, you can often wander around for ages fairly aimlessly. The towns also feel empty and dull with very little going on except for the various townsfolk milling around doing nothing much in particular.

One repeating quest sees you trying to unearth a spy posing as an arena contestant. To reveal the rogue you need to find clues to his appearance. Three random townsfolk will have information on what he looks like. Your job is to keep speaking to everyone you meet until you discover these clues, with many strangers simply dismissing your inquiries in repetitive responses. Once you found three helpful citizens in the tens you have questioned, you then have to piece together their description – let’s say he has hair, a beard and no war scars on his face for example. Then you wander around the town looking for someone who matches the description and also is not a generic townsperson, but has the moniker “contestant” show up on the screen when you approach. They could be anywhere in the labyrinthine alleyways and buildings, with no guide or map to help you. If you eventually find someone fitting the bill, you challenge them to an arena bout to seal the quest. Just make sure you don’t lose, or indeed challenge the wrong NPC, because if you do, you’ll fail the quest and have lost a good 30 minutes of your life and annoyed the quest-giver from an important noble family. Frustrating it most definitely can be.

The combat doesn’t fare much better, especially when compared to the likes of Total War, either in its range of options and strategy or in its execution. As the leader of the clan, you can choose to fight alongside your men on the battlefield. You can choose a variety of melee or ranged weapons, depending on the situation or the proficiency of your character in each. You can freely move and aim your attacks at the approaching enemy. There are certain commands you can issue to control how your battalion moves or deals with the enemy in front of you. It’s fairly rudimentary but gets the job done in most situations. The biggest frustration you’ll have is that moving with a controller is by far the slickest option, with using a keyboard, making your movement feel straight out of an early Resident Evil title. But the mouse and keyboard option is crucial for pinpoint aiming of ranged weapons and easily commanding your troops, so I was often juggling both methods for the best result which felt incredibly cumbersome.

Visually, it’s alright but certainly nothing special with plenty of low textures and often bland environments. The sounds during battle are not incredibly varied, mainly just a choice of a few phrases or grunts, keeping the voice acting to a minimum. The main tune that plays in the overworld does invoke the Lord of The Rings soundtrack at times though which gives it a welcome sense of grandeur. However, performance-wise Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord really suffers. There’s juttering and jank in so many places whether you’re striking up conversations, or if more than a few fighters are doing battle at once. It seems to struggle with it’s own design a lot, and I’ve had the game crash on me on numerous occasions, even after the patch that was put in to fix the known crashes once it went live on Early Access.

My critique has been pretty damning up to this point, and it may be confusing because I opened by saying I actually enjoy playing Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord. That’s because at times, I really, really do. The empire of Calradia is vast, not just in size, but in its depth as well. There’s always plenty of military and political shenanigans going on every day. As you move from town to town, various messages pop up highlighting various characters and factions have altered their allegiances in some far-flung corner. It gives the map a sense of being alive, of lots happening, and you being such a small part of a much, bigger, grander puzzle.

And behind all the jank and missteps, there’s a clear heart here, the scale of ambition is obvious when you play it. And if you embrace the spectacle – warts and all – there’s actually plenty to sink your teeth into. Fighting battles in third-person with an army at your back is much more engaging and action-fuelled because you’re not some omnipotent being affecting things from on high. Instead, you’re getting stuck in with your army as well, and nothing is as satisfying as finishing off an enemy with a solid sword strike or well-placed arrow let loose at just the right moment. Your reputation grows with your experience on the battlefield, and you feel yourself improving with your clan.

There are shops, with travelling caravans revealing where to buy cheap and sell high to maximise your profits to further invest in your army. There are arenas that test your fighting skill, both in teams and individually that reward you with riches and that all-important world renown. Progress the game, and you can recruit companions that provide perks to your clan and you can send them off on specific missions whilst you’re tied up elsewhere. You can swear fealty to lords and fight their wars for them whilst building your reputation. And you can choose to do all of these things or none of them, thanks to the sandbox nature of the game, and the hands-off approach to the main storyline and guidance it provides.

Mount and Blade II: Bannerlord is a game all about ambition. Your own drive for growth as you build your clan, but also ambition on the part of the developers as they attempt to create something truly epic. That intent, it’s fair to say, isn’t quite matched by the technical execution or in its design either. And the performance issues can be a real drag. However, for those willing to give it a go, to ignore the jank and the frustration, there’s a medieval rabbit hole here that can be quite fun to fall down. It’s certainly not perfect, and I would hope the finished game sees some serious performance upgrades, and issues are addressed. But certainly, the foundations are here for something a little bit different and very addictive.

If you enjoy your platforming randomly generated then you’re in luck, as Roguelike platformer Fury Unleashed is launching on console May 8th. It will also be leaving Steam early access the same day.

“Fury Unleashed combines design elements of modern roguelites (like Dead Cells and Rogue Legacy) with aesthetics and gameplay of classic platformer shooters (like Metal Slug and Contra). All that is built around the concept of playing through the pages of a comic book and telling the story of its author.”

There’s also a demo available on all formats right now, so if you need convincing it may be worth a download. I absolutely love a good Roguelike Platformer mashup, so as a Spelunky mega fan I’ll certainly be giving this a try.

Ubisoft has announced that their team-based sports game, Roller Champions, is getting a Closed Alpha. The free to play title will have you skating, passing, dodging and scoring to the backdrop of packed out arenas. Everything you’d expect from a roller blading game.

Roller Champions will pit two teams of three against each other as you attempt to score as many goals into the illuminated hoops. Preferably more than the opposing team if winning is your goal.

The Closed Alpha will give players the opportunity to feedback to the dev team. If you take part you can expect an exclusive in-game reward that you can keep when the full game launches.

Some new features included in the Roller Champions Closed Alpha include:

 • Character Customisation: You have a list of 70 items to customise your character with.
 • New Arena: There have been some changes to aid in improved gameplay and navigation. Changes have been made to the curvature, elevation and other environmental elements. Those taking part in the Closed Alpha will also experience the new Chichén Itzá arena.
 • New Moves: New moves have been added like the extended tackle and air tackle. There are also new team moves like the grapple boost, grapple double jump and grapple double pump.

The Closed Alpha will run from March 11, 5pm GMT to March 23 on Uplay for PC. You can sign up for a chance to take part in the Closed Alpha over on the website. The full release will launch some time in 2020.

TaleWorlds Entertainment has announced that Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord, will be released in Early Access on March 31, 2020. The anticipated sequel to Mount & Blade: Warband will be available for purchase through Steam, Epic Games Store, and TaleWorlds website. It will have an RRP of $49.99/€49.99/£39.99.

This isn’t the first time TaleWorlds has used Early Access as a means of testing games and bringing players on-board ahead of an official launch. This was their approach with the original Mount & Blade, and that worked incredibly well. Players don’t have long to wait until they can finally get their hands on a version of this anticipated sequel. TaleWolds has also promised more info on what to expect from Early Access closer to its release, so keep your eyes peeled.

There just aren’t enough 3D platformers anymore. They were staple of my gaming diet as a child (and more recently I even liked Yooka Laylee) so I’m always happy whenever a new one is announced. Fortunately Nicolas Meyssonnier has me covered, as his solo developed, spooky 3d platformer Pumpkin Jack is coming in Q4 to PC and consoles.

“Fans of games like MediEvil and Jak and Daxter will enjoy engaging in an epic battle of evil against good as you jump, dodge, and carve your way through challenging enemies and daunting puzzles. The use of Unreal Engine grants for gorgeously rendered and gruesomely colourful landscapes.

The peaceful Boredom Kingdom, with its happy citizens, monotonous calm… and adorable little bunnies, has sent the Devil himself into a flying rage! With dreams of turmoil, torture, and bloodshed on his mind, he unleashed the dreadful Curse of the Eternal Night upon the land. Not in love with the idea of a change in their peaceful lifestyle, the humans summon their saviour — a mighty wizard with the power to put an end to the evil curse.

In order to stop these party crashers from ruining his fun, the Devil summons the spirit of Jack, the Pumpkin Lord, to fight against the wizard’s army of beasts and destroy the killjoy wizard! You, as Jack, will be tearing your way through fright-filled levels as you punish those who dared defy your master!”

Any game compared to Jak and Daxter is fine by me, and I know I’ll be playing the game later this year.

Last year a kickstarter was run for a 16 bit SNES style RPG, Chained Echoes. It seems the kickstarter was a success, raising over 200% of the funding goal. That’s not too shabby a goal to reach.

The dev behind the RPG, Matthias Linda, announced that a publishing deal has been sorted. Matthias Linda will be teaming up with publisher Deck 13 to bring Chained Echoes to PC, PS4 and Switch.

Chained Echoes features customisable airships, massive mechs as well as the following features to get stuck into:

 • Fast paced turn-based battles
 • No random encounters: enemies can be seen on the map
 • Complex skill and equipment system
 • Travel and fight by foot or in your own Mech
 • Customize your own airship

There’s no firm release date yet but the aim is to release on PC, PS4 and Switch at the end of 2021. There is also a trailer for you to have a look at below:

ZA/UM has announced today its role-playing game, Disco Elysium has been updated to include a Hardcore Mode. Additionally, it is also now available to play on Steam with widescreen support. But what can fans or newcomers expect from the Disco Elysium Hardcore Mode? Check out the official list below to see what’s included:

You will fail more – The difficulty of every Check goes up, bringing down your chances of success. Solving this case without being a Total Disaster Cop is even harder than normal.

You’re going to be poorer – You’ll have even less money, meaning there’s less for you to pick up. Better get used to picking up every scrap you can find…

Prices have gone up – Pharmaceutical prices have gone up, which means failing costs you even more and they don’t heal you as much.

You’ll need to turn to the hard stuff – Booze and cigarettes are going to help you a lot, sweet ciggys clearing your head and extra drink to build courage will become more of a necessity on this playthrough.

Most treasured possessions – The few possessions you do have become more important, make sure to treasure what you have!

You’ll have to think more carefully – The Thought Cabinet debuffs are more painful when you’re already liable to fail. One the flip side, the bonuses thoughts offer might push you down paths you wouldn’t otherwise take.

You’ll level up faster – Failing builds character. You’ll gain extra token amounts of XP every time you finish a task and you’ll level faster and higher, if only marginally.

If that has piqued your interest, then check out the trailer below to see the game in action:

If you needed even more reason to try Disco Elysium, there’s now 20% off the main game as part of the Steam Lunar New Year sale. You can also get 20% off the DLC, which includes the game Soundtrack and Artbook too.

Disco Elysium is out now on PC.

Riot Games has announced that they’ll be launching an open beta for Legends of Runeterra, their new card game set in the League of Legends universe, on January 24, 2020 at 7pm GMT. The open beta will include brand new content and a variety of improvements, as well as the addition of the game’s first ranked season which will last until it launches. Like League of Legends, players will climb the ranks from Iron all the way to Master. There will also be a friends list, challenge-a-friend functionality, and the first new boards for friends and guardians. There’s been a major update to Anivia, with a further 20 cards also updated.

Legends of Runeterra was announced during the League of Legends 10-year anniversary celebration, and has been playable across two limited-access preview patches. The open beta will allow anyone to join in the fun, giving everyone the opportunity to create an account and start their journey on their official website. If you played during the two preview patches, or are already registered on PC, you’ll gain access one day early on January 23 at 7pm GMT. Accounts have been reset before the open beta, but from here on out, there will be no more resets.

Legends of Runeterra will officially launch later this year on both PC and mobile, and will be fully playable cross-platform.
