Sony has announced its Days of Play week-long promotion for PlayStation games, hardware, and more, is back for 2023 and is kicking off on June 2nd.

The announcement was made via the official Sony Blog from Senior Direct of Global Store & Services, Gareth Barker, who explained that “Days of Play 2023 will begin on June 2 at 12:01 AM until June 12 at 11:59 PM local time in each region. Our official Days of Play site will be updated with more information later this week, so be sure to check the site for the latest details. Please note that offers may vary by region and are available while supplies last”.

While we don’t know specific games that will be on offer yet, we know that PlayStation Plus will be on offer, with Barker saying “For both new and current PlayStation Plus members, all 12-month plans will be offered at 25% off – this includes Essential, Extra, and Premium/Deluxe”, and that “Current PlayStation Plus Essential and Extra members can also receive 25% off a 1-month, 3-month, or 12-month membership when upgrading to a higher tier plan – it’s a great time to try PlayStation Plus Premium or Deluxe”.

There will also be deals directly from PlayStation, with codes DOPSAVE15 (up to 15% on select PS5 Accessories, including DualSense charging station, HD camera, media remote, Pulse 3D wireless headsets, select PS5 console covers) and DOPSAVE40 (up to 40% on select PS5 games) that will be applicable via this link.

As you’d expect, there will be 20% off “Gear” using the DAYSOFPLAY23 code. For those that don’t know, the Gear is PlayStation branded clothing, or things like mugs and other merchandise. There will also be sales on specific digital games, though again, we don’t know what just yet.

There’s an official Days of Play site (that will update presumably on June 2nd) you can keep an eye on for all the deals, right here.

Crash Team Rumble is a surprisingly strategic multiplayer | Hands-on preview https://www.godisageek.com/2023/04/crash-team-rumble-is-a-surprisingly-strategic-multiplayer-hands-on-preview/ Mon, 24 Apr 2023 14:23:26 +0000 https://www.godisageek.com/?p=276766 Not bad, bandicoot

The post Crash Team Rumble is a surprisingly strategic multiplayer | Hands-on preview appeared first on GodisaGeek.com.

]]>

Crash Bandicoot has been a part of gaming for a long time now, whether as part of a platformer, racer, or something else. Now, Crash and friends are back to take on the medium of online multiplayer, and so far, Crash Team Rumble is pretty good. It is by no means going to appeal to everyone, and it took me a while to appreciate what it was trying to achieve in the closed beta, but there’s a surprising element of strategy to it, and if you can team up with players who actually want to work as a team, it can be a fair amount of fun.

The main purpose of Crash Team Rumble is to collect 2000 wumpa fruit and drop them off at your team’s base. By breaking boxes and picking up the fruit, each character can collect a limited amount. As long as you don’t get killed before dropping them off, they’ll build your team’s amount and edge you closer to victory. Of course, there’re variables which stop this from happening. Your opponents can attack you and take you out, but there’re various traps you can unlock to hamper their progress as well.

There were three specific classes in the beta, and each one serves a purpose when playing. Characters like Crash are Scorers, better suited to collect fruits and drop them back on base due to their effectiveness and speed when breaking boxes and getting around the map. Dingo Dile is a Blocker, fundamentally a big strong boy who uses brute force to both protect the scorer and wipe out any meddling opponents who try to take them out. He can whip enemies with his tale and use his vacuum to suck the life out of them, quite literally. Finally, you have Boosters like Cortex who are better suited at utilising traps across the map, and activating the score multipliers.

These score multipliers are key to collecting more wumpa. Gem platforms are available for each team, and to activate them you simply need to jump on them, however, enemies can also jump on them and break the chain. Once they light up in your team’s colour, they’ll add a percentage bonus depending on how many you activated. A 40% increase in wumpa means if you plan your strategies effectively, you can gather in excess of 500 in a manner of minutes, something I witnessed first hand, if only it was my team making the most of this. One of the biggest issues I had, and not something the developers can control, was a lack of teamwork by players who either don’t know what they’re doing, or simply prefer to just go around and kill their opponents.

The multiplier mechanic is a great way for your team to plan their approach, but if everyone isn’t working together, you’ll often find your dedication to the role you’ve chosen proves to be futile. If you are intending to play Crash Team Rumble with friends, this isn’t going to be an issue. You will find players who want to work together, but for the most part of my time with the closed beta, not everyone wanted to play ball. It’s a shame really, because there’s a strong foundation of gameplay to be built on, and while at first I wasn’t particularly gripped with it, I did start to appreciate the nuanced mechanics of each class and objective when I was part of a strong team.

With many live service games, the reason for returning follows two distinct paths: enjoying the game and what the Battle Passes reward you with. While Crash Team Rumble does have potential for plenty of enjoyment to be had, the Battle Pass at present doesn’t feel that exciting. Certain rewards like cosmetics look fine for what I’ve seen, but levelling up seemed relatively slow compared to the likes of Fortnite. Of course, we’re not at full release just yet, and the likelihood of player feedback being taken into consideration for the full release is a given. Time will tell with just how these improvements come to fruition.

Based purely on the closed beta, Crash Team Rumble has potential. Its simple gameplay structure works great if teammates work together, and the visuals are vibrant enough for fans of the Crash series to appreciate. The Battle Pass could do with some improvements, especially to how slow you seem to level up, and when more maps and characters are added, there’ll definitely be a market for more players to join and enjoy as time goes on.

Crash Team Rumble is coming to PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S|X, Nintendo Switch, and PC on June 20th.

PlayStation Plus April monthly games include Sackboy: A Big Adventure https://www.godisageek.com/2023/03/playstation-plus-april-monthly-games-include-sackboy-a-big-adventure/ Thu, 30 Mar 2023 08:16:26 +0000 https://www.godisageek.com/?p=275782 Time to Meet Your Maker.

The post PlayStation Plus April monthly games include Sackboy: A Big Adventure appeared first on GodisaGeek.com.

]]>

Sony has announced the PlayStation Plus April monthly free games available across PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, and one of them is a console exclusive in the form of Sackboy: A Big Adventure. We say console exclusive because it released for PC not too long ago.

The three PlayStation Plus April games will become available to players on April 4th up until May 1st, with Sackboy: A Big Adventure perhaps leading the charge, but it might not overshadow Meet Your Maker, a brand new game launching day and date on PS Plus. Meet Your Maker is from the same developer as Dead by Daylight, and the two games are having a crossover at the moment.

We previously knew about Meet Your Maker being the main attraction of the PlayStation Plus April monthly games, and it’ll be the PS4 and PS5 version. Sony (via the official blog) gave this as the description of the title:

Meet Your Maker is a post-apocalyptic first-person building-and-raiding game where every level is designed by players. Switch between roles as you mastermind devious Outposts filled with traps and guards, then gear up for methodical fast-paced combat raiding other players’ creations, gaining an edge by choosing the right loadout (melee, ranged, defensive), perks, and consumables to match your challenge or playstyle. Combine your creativity and build with a friend or join forces to raid Outposts as a team of two.

Sackboy is also the PS4 and PS5 version, while rounding out the three titles for April is Tails of Iron (PS4 and PS5, also) which Chris White scored a 9/10, saying, “Tails of Iron is a special little game. It takes a simple approach to combat and finds a way to make every fight a tense encounter of risk and reward. The hand-drawn art style drew me right in, and the variety in gear and the need to constantly experiment against different enemy types had me hooked throughout. It’s Souls-like inspirations are felt around every corner, but it is very much its own thing”.

Battlefield 2042 is coming to PlayStation Plus in March https://www.godisageek.com/2023/02/battlefield-2042-is-coming-to-playstation-plus-in-march/ Fri, 24 Feb 2023 08:56:40 +0000 https://www.godisageek.com/?p=274073 Essential level gets the goods.

The post Battlefield 2042 is coming to PlayStation Plus in March appeared first on GodisaGeek.com.

]]>

PlayStation has confirmed the three games for PS Plus in March subscribers will get, and Battlefield 2042 is leading the charge.

While it was off to a rocky start, Battlefield 2042 has just been updated in a major way, with a return to the class system, which is more familiar to long-time players of the series. There are now four classes (Assault, Recon, Support, Engineer), but there are also major weapon improvements, balancing changes, a reworked Breakaway map, and even the audio and visual side of the game has been overhauled.

Battlefield 2042 is now in season 4, called “Eleventh Hour”, and with it coming to PlayStation Plus in March, it’s not a bad time to have a try, if you’ve always wanted to, but been put off by the early negative impressions.

Elsewhere, Minecraft Dungeons is also joining the PlayStation Plus Essential Tier, and this is another game that’s improved over time, with a wealth of content added via DLC. Back in May 2020 when it was released, Mick said that “Minecraft Dungeons is enjoyable in small doses and will amuse younger gamers for a while. And it has potential, heaps of it, so in a year’s time it may be a very different beast. But I’m afraid that right now I can’t shake the notion that this is a bit of a squandered opportunity that really should have done more with its source material”.

The final of the three titles to join PS Plus Essential on March 7th is Code Vein. Another Mick review, he said in 2019 that “Code Vein presents a unique and, dare-I-say, slightly more casual alternative to titles like Bloodborne and Dark Souls. It’s no revolution, but, perhaps ironically, Code Vein is an enjoyable, compelling Soulslike with a great deal of heart”.

Game of the Year 2022: God of War Ragnarok https://www.godisageek.com/2022/12/game-of-the-year-2022-god-of-war-ragnarok/ Sat, 31 Dec 2022 16:00:43 +0000 https://www.godisageek.com/?p=271600 Kratos does it again.

The post Game of the Year 2022: God of War Ragnarok appeared first on GodisaGeek.com.

]]>

After 12+ hours of Game of the Year 2022 podcasts deliberations, not only did we all stay friends, but we decided on the best game of the year, and it’s God of War Ragnarok.

Here’s what the team said about God of War Ragnarok, the GodisaGeek Game of the Year 2022. It even got picked a few times in our Community Choice award, too! It dominated our day four awards when it came to best story and best moment, but also got shouts in best visuals, best audio, and was generally received well by everyone on staff.

Mick Fraser: Ragnarok is an exceptional video game. Of that there is no doubt. This is a game that positively thrums with emotion, and reflects quality in every facet of its design, from the tremendous combat to the groundbreaking cinematic direction. I cannot fault it, nor would I wish to. What Sony Santa Monica achieved with Kratos in particular here is nothing short of staggering. The characterisation is a new benchmark in terms of how to steer an arc, and it will be a long, long time before anyone tops it.

Chris Hyde: Frankly, God of War: Ragnarok is nothing short of a masterpiece. The addictive, well-executed gameplay lands on just the right side of accessible, with the light-touch puzzles and checklist of collectibles successfully dragging you into every area, tantalising you with everything it has to offer. The combat is initially simple and intuitive but the skill trees and upgrade systems give you so many versatile options to suit your preferences, or indeed, your curiosity. Traversal is efficient, satisfying, and respectful of your time, further encouraging you onto your next endeavour.

And then we move from the well-executed to the frankly astonishing. The benchmark-setting factors of God of War: Ragnarok. Visually this game is outstanding. The attention to detail in the character models, their facial animations, and the way they move, all sets the standard for others to follow in the future. The voice acting is also superb, particularly from the returning characters, and the writing gives it all meaning. These all come together to weave a heartfelt, believable story comprised of woven interactions between Kratos and Atreus that at times made me genuinely weep. You’re immersed, you’re fighting, and you are Kratos and Atreus. I wondered how Santa Monica would top 2018’s God of War. What they’ve produced in Ragnarok is another leap forward and everything you could want in the sequel.

Game of the Year 2022 GOTY 2022

Chris White: God of War Ragnarok is the most ambitious video game I’ve ever played, and more than deserves to be in my list for Game of the Year 2022. It’s story blew my mind, and the emotional depth it carries is unlike anything I’ve seen before. Kratos and Atreus’ relationship, the death of popular characters, the staggering scope of its battles, and the visually incredible worlds I explored. Honestly, it never skipped a beat, from its storytelling to its level design. Not only did it look great and featured some of the best writing to date, it succeeded in being such a fun game to play. The combat was layered and ever-evolving, the traversal was enjoyable, and throughout every step of my 30-hour playthrough, I was left in awe at the work Santa Monica has put in.

Adam Cook: After everything I said about it in 2018, the only shock to me is how good this ended up being. With emotive moments that left me borderline broken, Ragnarok did was the previous title did: for a while it left me unable to get back into anything else. I tried to just “keep playing it” but I wanted more and more. The story is one of the best I’ve seen in a game, with a redemption ark unlike anything that’s come before it, with moment after moment of well told, brilliant story beats.

But it’s the character development. The relationship between father and son: the moment a small child becomes someone you trust to have your back. Everything about God of War Ragnarok made me feel like the developer knew exactly what it was doing. This is another masterpiece of production, direction, writing, world building, design… I could lament the brilliance for a long time. It’s number one with a bullet.

And that’s it, congrats again to Sony and Santa Monica Studio, and here’s to another great year in 2023.

Capcom has announced that the enormously popular Monster Hunter Rise is coming to PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S|X, and Windows PC (Game Pass) on January 20th, 2023.

Originally released as a Nintendo Switch exclusive, the PC version came along this year unlocking the frame rate and pushing sales for Monster Hunter Rise to over 11 million units, which is — let’s face it — incredibly impressive. This new version of the game will be just the base game, with Sunbreak coming in Spring 2023.

As you’d expect, the newer consoles will give the game a push thanks to the hardware power, but it’ll also use the adaptive triggers of the PS5 DualSense as well as 3D audio on Xbox Series S|X as well. The full information is as follows:

Monster Hunter Rise features customizable optimizations, allowing hunters to enjoy their journey in 4K resolution and 60 FPS on Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5, while also offering 3D audio for Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5. Ranged and shielded weapons will also make use of DualSense adaptive triggers on PlayStation 5. Monster Hunter Rise launches on Jan 20, 2023 and is available now for pre-purchase. The game also arrives on Xbox Game Pass at launch.

It’s not a secret that we are big fans of the game, with Mick having reviewed both the PC and Switch version, and Sunbreak, and giving it the big 10/10 each time, saying: “Rise is a huge, rich game, filled with things to see and challenges to overcome, which manages to feel incredibly accessible to newcomers while still catering to the veterans. It’s a superb entry to the Switch’s bustling library, but more than that, it’s a stunning example of a game created by a dev team that know exactly what they’re doing”.

The PlayStation, Xbox, and Game Pass version will be out on January 20th, 2023. Bookmark our complete guide ready for that date.

A sequel to the hugely popular Octopath Traveler has been announced, coming to PS5, PS4, Nintendo Switch, and PC on February 24, 2023. Octopath Traveler II will take place in the fictional world of Solistia, “a land comprising an eastern and western continent divided by the sea.” Large shipping vessels navigate busy sea routes, with the power of steam providing new technologies to the bustling city. The signature visuals return, with HD-2D graphics, retro pixel art, and 3DCG, looking even better than in its predecessor.

Octopath Traveler II will feature eight new travelers hailing from different regions, all with their own origins, motivations, and unique skills, with players exploring the land, uncovering their stories, and using unique talents to aid them along their journey. They’ll all have a set of Path Actions to battle townspeople, obtain items, take others along on their travels, and more. Returning features like the freedom to develop jobs and skills, and the Break and Boost system, will all return for the sequel. New mechanics are also set to feature.

It’s been four years since the original released, but we gave it a solid 8.5, saying, “Octopath Traveler has brought to mind some of my fondest memories of games like Final Fantasy V, Final Fantasy X, Bravely Default, and even a bit of what I played of Romancing SaGa 2. I don’t mention those names lightly and while this is a fantastic JRPG in its own right, it continues to resonate more and more with me as I see how some aspects of my favourite games have been sprinkled in to this game that feels like a love letter to the 16-bit JRPG era but built for the modern era. Octopath Traveler is not only an essential RPG but it is a fantastic reason to buy a Switch if you’ve been craving a meaty JRPG with one of the best soundtracks in gaming and a superb battle system.

The post PlayStation Plus catalog getting Yakuza games, Dead by Daylight, and more appeared first on GodisaGeek.com.

]]>

This month it seems the PlayStation Plus is getting a load of new additions, but these are on top of the “regular” games being added to the library and are titles being newly added to the “premium” and “extra” membership tiers.

Staring off, the first three Yakuza games are coming, including Zero. So that’s Yakuza 0, Kiwami, and Kiwami 2. That’s hundreds of hours of playtime, easily, with 0 being particularly lengthy (and brilliant). Chris White reviewed it back in 2017, scoring it 8.5/10, saying “Yakuza 0 is a wonderfully crazy game, and there’s always something new to do. There are loads of challenges to do, giving completion addicts their hit, and even if you’re not into that, it doesn’t matter. Just go with Yakuza 0 and embrace the craziness; you’ll feel much better for it”.

Then there’s Dead by Daylight, a game so popular it just had a dating spin-off released in Hooked on You.

Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands is in a far better state now than when it launched, and is a bit of fun in three player co-op, and that’s also coming to PS Plus Extra/Premium.

Bugsnax is another major title, which got DLC recently, while the rest of the list includes Metro Exodus, Trials of Mana, Uno, Monopoly Madness, and Monopoly Plus.

All in all, a decent month for PlayStation Plus, it seems. Nothing massive, but after Yakuza: Like a Dragon, Little Nightmares, and Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2 were added as the monthly games, that does seem plenty to be getting on with.

The rest of the Yakuza games will be added before 2022 is out, as well, so you’ll have plenty of Kiryu in your life if you want it, coming pretty soon.

Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection coming to PS5 in January https://www.godisageek.com/2021/12/uncharted-legacy-of-thieves-collection-coming-to-ps5-in-january/ Tue, 07 Dec 2021 14:26:47 +0000 https://www.godisageek.com/?p=258142 I got this.

The post Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection coming to PS5 in January appeared first on GodisaGeek.com.

]]>

Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection brings together Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End and Uncharted: The Lost Legacy in one package, all remastered for PlayStation 5. That’s two of the best in the Uncharted series. This one? This is gonna be good, folks.

The two games are both being remastered for PS5, which means a higher resolution and frame rate. It also means 3D audio if you have a compatible headset or device. On top of that, there’s adaptic triggers functionality being added to the PS5’s DualSense triggers. The trailer below shows off how good it looks in motion. Let’s face it, these were already two stellar looking games.

Graphics modes for Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection

 • Fidelity Mode – For those of you who have a 4K display and want super sharp resolution above all else to enjoy the stunning environments and details the Uncharted series is known for, select Fidelity Mode and play in native 4K resolution with a 30fps target framerate.
 • Performance Mode – We carried over the high framerate PS4 patch with Performance Mode, which targets a 60fps frame rate.
 • Performance+ Mode – If you’re all about the smoothest gameplay possible and don’t mind a resolution drop, try out our first ever Performance+ Mode which targets 120fps* at a 1080p resolution.

It’s hard to believe that Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End came out way back in 2016. It scored a massive 10/10, as did The Lost Legacy in August 2017, with Chris White saying: “I hope they never stop making Uncharted games as long as I live because I love them so much. I love the thrill of it, the bonds built, the set pieces that unfold, and the world than exists in the deep recesses of civilisation, whether it’s a 100 or 1000 miles away”.

If you owned any of the games originally on PS4, you can even upgrade. $10 gets you the PS5 remastered versions. There’s some fine print, mind you. PlayStation Plus members who claimed Uncharted 4 via their PS Plus subscription are not eligible for the digital PS5 upgrade.

Uncharted is a busy franchise right now, because there’s also a movie of the same name coming to theaters on February 18th, 2022. Between now and February 3, 2022 11:59pm PT, players in select countries can purchase or upgrade via PlayStation Store and receive a voucher code for one standard ticket to see the Uncharted movie in participating theaters starting from February 2022.

Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection is coming to PS5 on January 28th, 2022. It’s also head to PC sometime in 2022.

Sucker Punch has today announced that Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut will be coming to PS5 and PS4 on August 20. It was announced on the official PlayStation blog by Andrew Goldfarb, Communications Manager at Sucker Punch. Firstly, the cut will feature a brand new island to explore. Secondly, there will be PS5-specific features like DualSense haptic feedback, Japanese lip sync, and more.

Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut will come with every piece of content released so far, along with Iki Island. Jin will venture there in a brand new chapter of his story. After investigating rumours of a Mongol presence, “he finds himself caught up in events with deeply personal stakes that will force him to relive some traumatic moments from his past.” Iki Island features tons of new content, including new environments; armour, minigames; techniques; enemy types; and more.

As for the PS5-exclusive features, it’ll feature Japanese lip sync thanks to the console’s ability to render cinematics in real time. Haptic feedback and adaptive triggers will also feature, as well as enhancements to 3D audio; drastically improved load times; 4K resolution options; and a targeted framerate of 60fps. Players will be able to transfer save data from PS4 to PS5. For new players, Iki Island becomes available at the beginning of Act 2. Alongside the release of the Director’s Cut, a free update will be available with new photo mode updates, new accessibility options for controller mapping, and the option to enable a target lock-on during combat.

There will be an all new mode announced in the following weeks. For more information on pricing, special editions, and more, check out the blog here. Watch the announcement trailer below:

The post First major PS5 update brings new storage options and more appeared first on GodisaGeek.com.

]]>

Sony has announced the first major system software update for the PS5 console will be rolling out globally on April 14, 2021. The update will let you store PS5 games on USB extended storage, share gameplay across PS5 and PS4 consoles, and more.

PS5 Storage Expansion and Management

PS5 update

You will be able to transfer your PS5 games to compatible USB extended storage from your console’s internal storage. This means you can extend the storage capabilities of your PS5 console, and you can seamlessly copy your PS5 games back to the console’s internal storage when you’re ready to play. It is faster to reinstall PS5 games from USB extended storage than to re-download or copy them from a disc.

It’s worth noting that PS5 titles can’t be played from USB extended storage or directly downloaded to USB extended storage. However, games that you transfer or copy back to internal storage will automatically update when applicable. In addition, you can select which game modes you want to install (such as campaign or multiplayer) for select titles that support the option.

New Social Features for PS4 and PS5 Consoles

PS5 update

 • Cross-generation Share Play. PS4 and PS5 players will now be able to Share Play together while chatting in parties. This means PS5 console users can let their friends on PS4 consoles view their game screen, or even try out the PS5 games through Share Play, and vice versa. Options include the ability to share your screen with a friend, pass your controller virtually to a friend, or pass a second controller virtually to play co-op games together.
 • Request to Join Game Session. A selection of your friends’ joinable game sessions will now appear on both PS5 and PS4 consoles, allowing for more gameplay opportunities together. The “Request to Join” option also serves as a shortcut to sending a game invite, reducing the time it takes for you to get into games with friends. Through the Privacy Settings menu, you can modify who can interact with you through parties, games and messages.

Enhanced Control and Personalization Options for PS5 Consoles

PS5 update

 • Improved Game Base. The Game Base menu has been improved for quicker access to important content and features. You can now easily switch between Parties and Friends to start chatting with your existing parties or see what each of your online friends is up to. In addition, you can turn notifications on or off for each of the parties you’re in.
 • Disable Game Chat or Adjust Players’ Volume. You can now quickly disable in-game chat, which turns off your mic audio and the voice audio of other players. Additionally, you can easily adjust the individual voice chat volume of other players in the same chat so you don’t have to ask your friends to lower or increase their mic volume each time.
 • Game Update Pre-download. Once it’s enabled by developers, title updates for games will pre-download to your console if the “automatic updates” setting is enabled and your console is on or in rest mode. This will let you start playing the latest version of a game immediately after the update’s release.
 • Customize Game Library. With the ability to search your library or hide games from view, it’s now easier to find content and personalize your view of your game library.
 • Screen Zoom. You can now adjust the magnification of the screen to suit your preference from the Settings menu.
 • New Trophy Settings and Stats Screen. The level of trophies that results in automatic capture of a screenshot or video clip can now be customized — so you can now choose to only capture and save images/videos of moments when you earn higher-grade trophies, like Gold or Platinum. We’re also introducing a new player Trophy Stats screen, where you can check out the summary of your trophy level and status at a glance.

New Features for PlayStation App

New features will also be available for the PlayStation App to make it easier to connect with your console experience remotely. Recent updates introduced the ability to save products in a wishlist, get notifications when your friends are online, and change your console online status. More updates will be rolled out in the coming weeks, including the ability to join a multiplayer session on PS5 from the app, manage your PS5 console storage, compare trophy collections with friends, and sort and filter products shown in the PlayStation Store.

This PS5 update will be rolling out April 14, 2021.

Today, developers Creepy Jar has announced their hyper-realistic and critically-acclaimed survival game Green Hell will be heading to Xbox One and PS4 this June. The game is set deep in the uncharted regions of the Amazon rainforest, challenging players to survive harsh environments with dangers lurking around every corner.

Green Hell arrived on PC in Steam Early Access all the way back in August 2018, with the full release dropping September 2019. Since it first arrived, over 1.5 million players have dived into the Amazon, with the developers added tons of improvements along the way, making Green Hell a robust and deep experience. A story mode, co-op challenges, and general improvements have all been included since the game launched, with Creepy Jar now hard at work to release a next-gen upgrade as well.

The key features of Green Hell include:

 • Survive the Amazon – Resource management, base building, crafting, hunting, wound inspection, sanity management, and more. Green Hell relentlessly puts players to the ultimate survival test in the remote reaches of the Amazon rainforest.

 • Story Mode – How did you end up in the Amazon? What happened to your love, Mia? How can you escape? How can you survive? Seeking answers to these questions will take you to the brink of sanity as you rediscover well-known areas and discover new areas for the first time.

 • Survive TOGETHER – Up to 4 players can tackle the rainforest together in the ultimate bid for survival! Whether it’s story mode or endless mode, you can look forward to pulling leeches from all your friends’ nether-parts and more in co-op mode!

 • And more! – Whether it’s custom modes, achievement chasing, tackling unique challenges, or building the best jungle hut south of the equator, Green Hell is a robust experience that continues to grow with each update from the Creepy Jar team.

To celebrate the announcement, a brand new trailer has been released, which you can watch below:

Double Eleven has today announced that their successful and often brutal competitive multiplayer survival game Rust is coming to PS4 and Xbox One this Spring. When the game arrives in a few months, players will be forced to survive against up to 100 other players, bears, wolves, and more. After waking up on a post-apocalyptic island, you must find shelter and clothes whilst surviving against the elements without any rules at all. This freedom will allow for moments of deception and aggression, but if you choose to work together with others, your chances of survival will be higher.

Since Rust launched all the way back in 2013 via Early Access on Steam, millions of players have taken part in the “ultimate social experiment.” UK-based Double Eleven has been working on developing the game for console, independently from Facepunch who developed the game for PC. To celebrate the announcement, a brand new trailer showing players what to expect has been revealed, and you can watch it below:

Fans of the classic 3d platformer have a new game to check out this month, when Pumpkin Jack comes to PS4 later this month. On the 24th, you’ll be able to explore the Halloween themed world of the Arc En Ciel Kingdom for yourself on whichever Sony console you’re rocking at the moment.

“Headup is thrilled to announce the PS4 release date of the comically creepy 3D platformer from solo-developer Nicolas Meyssonnier, Pumpkin Jack. It will make its way to PS4 on February 24, and will please both fans of all-time classics like MediEvil and Jak & Daxter as well as everybody who’s looking for an eerie and diversified game to play.

Pumpkin Jack is a spooky scary 3D platformer in which you embody Jack, the Mythical Pumpkin Lord. Dive into an epic adventure through otherworldly landscapes and help the Evil annihilate the Good.

Follow the will of the Devil himself and slay your nemesis in an epic quest that will take you on a journey in the Arc En Ciel Kingdom, a mythical realm shattered by the curse. You will meet friends along the way, from a haughty owl to a snarky crow!

Discover stunning atmospheres in a colorful yet spooky scary Kingdom. Travel through epic and dramatic settings, with each level having its own eerie atmosphere. Using a vibrant palette and high-quality lighting effects, Pumpkin Jack invents its own unique cartoon universe inspired by the classic PS2 graphic style, made with Unreal Engine 4.

Pumpkin Jack is a classic 3D Platformer before anything else! Every level will challenge you through several themed platforms, all giving you new trials to complete. You will have to master the arts of dodging, timing, and movement to vanquish Jack’s foes. During the dynamic real time battles, choose which weapon you want to use and strike at the critical moment!”

Pumpkin Jack looks entirely like my kinda game, so I’m gonna make sure to play it later this month. We don’t get a ton of 3d platformers nowadays, so getting an exciting new one inspired by the classics is really exciting.

Meridiem Games has confirmed that a boxed edition of story-driven interactive drama Fahrenheit: 15th Anniversary Edition will launch on January 26, 2021, for PS4. Publisher Quantic Dream is also known for other popular titles such as Heavy Rain, Beyond: Two Souls, and Detroit: Become Human.

The Fahrenheit: 15th Anniversary Edition will include a specially created case and sleeve, a sticker set, high quality printed art book, and a thank-you letter written by the team at Quantic Dream. This boxed edition will retail for £24.99 / €29.99 and is available to pre-order in specialist gaming stores now.

Fahrenheit originally launched back in September 2005 on PS2 and Xbox, before making its way to the Xbox 360 and then eventually the PS4. It is a story-driven interactive drama played in both first and third-person perspectives. New York City is stunned by a series of brutal slayings that all follow the same pattern: ordinary people possessed by a supernatural force causing them to commit murder. The story follows Lucas Kane who finds himself hunted by police detectives Carla Valenti and Tyler Miles after fleeing the scene of one such murder with no memory of what happened. What follows, is a thrilling, story-driven adventure where your choices have a direct effect on how the story unfolds.

With the release of the excellent Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War came with it the promise of much more content down the line. This week marked the first with Nuketown ’84 – with some new weapons and double XP to celebrate.

Nuketown itself has been given a post-nuclear coat of paint with cracked buildings, DIY paths and plenty of fire. The trailer down below introduces it perfectly contrasting that psychedelic inspired art with the crumbling foundation around it. Not only this, there appear to be a few more changes made this time around with new paths for the RCXD and a clock tower counting down the map time.

The layout is ever so slightly different and is designed as a “sister site to the original nuketown” tweeted:

creative specialist Miles Leslie. This is done to fit that balance in years between the singleplayer in 1981 and the multiplayer in 1983. Making it the original Nuketwon might constrain it somewhat so this allowed them to get creative. Its been abandoned for over thirty years and the aesthetic shows that.

Moving from here, there are also 6 charms, an emblem, calling card, sticker and weapon blueprint available to current owners of the game. With the number of weapons already available in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War and the time it might take you to unlock anything for the Huaer 77 shotgun, this is a welcome addition. Starting November 24th, double XP should get you there even faster.

As always, this map hides a sneaky easter egg too. Shoot the heads off all the mannequins for a nice surprise. Doing so activates a retro filter complete with a black and purple sky. You might want to keep an ear out for that addictive synthwave music too.

This is all available right now so hop in and get shooting.

If swinging swords around in a virtual and hostile world sounds like your idea of a good time, then prepare to strike when SWORDS of GARGANTUA comes to PS VR next month.

“VR sword-action game SWORDS of GARGANTUA will launch on PlayStation VR starting December 8, 2020. Already a hit title for Oculus Rift, Oculus Quest, HTC Vive, HTC VIVE COSMOS and Windows Mixed Reality, PlayStation VR fans will soon be able to engage in fast-paced rogue-lite action and realistic swordplay.

Featuring both single-player mode and online co-op with up to 3 other players, SWORDS of GARGANTUA features realistic swordplay in an immersive VR-enabled online environment. Players must level up their weapons and abilities to fight against a horde of enemies, and ultimately face their master, the towering titan named GARGANTUA. A wide variety of weapons are available, allowing you to pursue your own virtual reality action (one and two-handed swords, axes, maces, boomerangs, shields, etc.). While playing, you can use voice chat to communicate with your fellow warriors while taking on the enemies in Tesseract Abyss.”

This is definitely the kind of game that gets me interested in VR. Roguelite sword fighting with online co-op would be a day one purchase if I wasn’t such a queezy mess. For those of a more stable composition, it might be worth a purchase next month.

If you’re feeling on the fence about getting into some Formula One racing, then you’re now in luck. There’s an F1 2020 trial available now, on both PS4 and Xbox One.

“Starting today, players on Xbox One and PlayStation® 4 can download a free trial of F1® 2020, the official videogame of the 2020 FIA FORMULA ONE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP™. Offering options to suit every style of play, the trial features My Team and the return of split-screen for competitive couch play. Plus, with the introduction of the new accessible handling, players of all levels can compete the moment they take to the starting line.

In the F1® 2020 My Team trial, players begin by creating their team, picking a Formula 2™ team mate to race alongside, and compete in the first race weekend in Australia. Split-screen racing at the Austrian Red Bull Ring and all casual handling mode options are also available. Should players decide to upgrade to the full game, progress made in the trial will be automatically carried over, alongside access to staple series inclusions such as Career, Time Trial, weekly events, classic car challenges, and online multiplayer.

“The F1® 2020 free trial offers something for every race fan with the inclusion of My Team, casual handling, and split-screen,” said Lee Mather, F1® Franchise Game Director at Codemasters. “Whether you’re an avid F1® fan who’s never played before, or you’re a returning veteran player, there’s plenty to enjoy.””

With plenty of options of how to play, racing game fans owe it to themselves to try out this trial. Our own Gary Bailey loved it earlier this year, so if you’re on the fence then trying it for yourself could be worth your time.

One of the most exciting games of the next generation now has a confirmed release date. Sega have announced that Yakuza: Like a Dragon launches on Xbox Series X, S, One, PC and PS4 on November 10th. The PS5 version of the game won’t be coming for some time though, with the release set for March 2nd if you want to play it on the white monolith.

“SEGA today has announced that its one-of-a kind RPG Yakuza: Like a Dragon will be launching on Xbox Series X | S, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Windows 10 and Steam on November 10, 2020, aligning the release dates for all current-generation releases with the Xbox Series X | S launch date. As previously revealed, the Xbox Series X | S versions will offer a Smart Delivery upgrade path for Xbox One owners of the game.

SEGA is happy to announce that Yakuza: Like a Dragon will be launching on PlayStation®5 in the West on March 2, 2021, following the game’s PlayStation®4 launch on November 10, 2020. Once players purchase the digital PS4™ version of Yakuza: Like a Dragon at PlayStation®Store they are able to download the PS5™ version at no extra cost when it launches on March 2, 2021. The PS5™ version of Yakuza: Like a Dragon will also be available standalone on March 2, 2021 for $59.99, with commensurate pricing in EMEA.

An experience like no other, Yakuza: Like a Dragon brings dynamic RPG gameplay to the streets of Yokohama, Japan, with an epic adventure that combines the intense brawls, crushing drama, and over the top hilarity that the Yakuza series is known for. The game also features voice acting from a dynamic cast of actors, including George Takei, Kaiji Tang, Andrew Morgado, Greg Chun and Elizabeth Maxwell.”

After the huge purchase of Bethesda’s parent company ZeniMax Media last week, this announcement is another feather in Microsoft’s cap going into the next generation. With so many big moves happening on the Xbox side, this generation is looking like it could be much more competitive than the last between the two companies.

First Bugsnax gameplay trailer shown as part of Sony’s State of Play

I think it’s fair to say that the pure joy of the Bugsnax reveal stole the show in June, so it’s only fitting that the First Bugsnax gameplay trailer would impress in last night’s State of Play. The future PS5 title from the creators of Octodad has definitely got our attention here.

“Since its reveal, the mysterious half-bug, half-snack creatures have captured the imagination of curious players around the world, but many have wondered, “What actually is Bugsnax?” Today’s trailer showcases what players can expect when they first arrive on Snaktooth Island, and a glimpse at the mysteries it holds.

Use traps and sauces to capture Bugsnax

On top of being tasty, each of the 100 different species of Bugsnax have their own behaviors and patterns. Use that journalistic know-how! Observe and take notes to discover which handy traps, tasty sauces, and witty strategies can get the job done.

Meet and help out Grumpuses

You’re not alone on Snaktooth Island! Fuzzy and eccentric pioneers known as Grumpuses have also followed Elizabert Megafig in search of Bugsnax. They have created the cozy settlement of Snaxburg, but all is not well in this tasty paradise. Solve their Bugsnax related problems and personal drama to make Snaxburg a thriving community!

Break the biggest story of your career

Bugsnax themselves are not the only mystery on this island. Elizabert Megafig has gone missing! Interview the Grumpuses of Snaxburg to connect the dots and find out what happened. Perhaps Snaktooth Island is more than it seems.”

Gathering snack food is something of a talent of mine, so I’m excited to see that Bugsnax has been designed with me in mind. I can’t wait to get trapping towards the end of this year, especially after seeing the first Bugsnax gameplay trailer last night.

Playstation has announced via Twitter that they will be holding a brand-new State of Play event on Thursday, August 6, 2020, at 13:00 PST / 21:00 BST.

You can check out the tweet from the official PlayStation account below:

From the Tweet, it is clear this is an event more focussed on PS4 and PSVR, as PlayStation has been quick to point out there will be no big PS5 announcements. So any thoughts on a price reveal for the PS5 have been quickly muted. However, that’s not to say that the August State of Play event won’t feature any PS5 updates. We can expect a few third-party updates as well as a look at some indie titles for the system too. These will likely be progress updates from the PS5 Showcase that happened in June.

There should be a decent amount of content too. The event will be over 40 minutes in length, and so expect to hear a few new tidbits of information, even if the focus isn’t on PlayStation Studios themselves.

You can find out more information on the State of Play event here, including more details about what to expect, as well as how to tune into the event live.

Focus Home Interactive and Lightbulb Crew have dropped some a new video showcasing their upcoming strategy horror game. The new Othercide gameplay overview trailer shows off the game’s brutal tactical combat, and I can’t way to jump in.

“Othercide debuts on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC in under two weeks on July 28th, and later this summer on Nintendo Switch. As Humanity’s last hope, lead your army of Daughters to combat in an intricate dance of spectacular actions and counters, and face fearsome bosses in epic battles. Today’s Othercide gameplay trailer shows off exclusive footage, taking a deep dive into the tactical combat and progression systems that make up this dark indie gem.

In Othercide, the unique Dynamic Timeline System is at the core of every battle. Rather than simply controlling where and what your units do, you will also manipulate when things happen. This can be used in many ways, from interrupting an enemy attack before it even occurs, to unleashing a devastating series of combos. Death will inevitably take you. Healing Daughters requires the sacrifice of another, and your forces cannot withstand the onslaught of Suffering forever. However, there is hope: each failed run opens up new game-changing abilities, options and opportunities for the next attempt.”

Othercide is looking to end an already packed July with a bang. Horror and strategy don’t often meet, so I hope Lightbulb Crew are able to pull this genre mashup off.

The post Top 20 Japanese Films and Comics to Check Out Ahead of Ghost of Tsushima Launch appeared first on GodisaGeek.com.

]]>

With the final (?) PlayStation 4 exclusive Ghost of Tsushima releasing this week, PlayStation UK brought in Japanese film critic, Jasper Sharp, and manga comic creator Chie Kutsuwada, to put together a list of Japanese films and comics that you might may want to check out ahead of Sucker Punch’s new game.

Ghost of Tsushima is steeped in Japanese culture and draws on the island’s rich history, which has been a source of inspiration for many film directors and manga comic creators. The game itself has been credited by producers as heavily influenced by the likes of renowned Japanese filmmaker, Akira Kurosawa, and even includes a posthumous nod to him with the inclusion of gaming feature “Kurosawa Mode”. This feature mirrors Kurosawa’s filmmaking style and allows players to explore from a black and white cinematic mode.

To start, Jasper Sharp recommends these 10 films:

Seven Samurai (Shichinin no samurai, Akira Kurosawa, 1954)

Credited as one of Japan’s best-known titles overseas, Kurosawa’s masterpiece shows the tale of a group of samurais hired by a village of farmers to fend off the regular attacks of a group of marauding bandits. The film, which directly influenced Ghost of Tsushima, vividly brings to life the ways of a samurai, showing their fight with dignity and heart.

The Samurai trilogy (Hiroshi Inagaki, 1954-6)

The life of the master swordsman Musashi Miyamoto, famed for his two-handed fighting technique, has been filmed many times. Inagaki’s epic saga charts his path along the Bushido way of the warrior through his numerous duels and battles, across the decades from his impetuous youth to his moment of spiritual awakening. The film’s rousing fight scenes gave international viewers their introduction to the ethics and codes of the samurai, which lie at the heart of the storyline of Ghost of Tsushima.

Throne of Blood (Kumonosu-jo, Akira Kurosawa, 1957)

Akira Kurosawa’s inventive adaptation of Shakespeare’s Macbeth shows the lawless realm of 16th Century feudal Japan – a hauntingly atmospheric version of this universally relatable tale of grasping ambition and retribution.

Yojimbo (Akira Kurosawa, 1961)

Another Kurosawa classic which also inspired Sucker Punch during the creation of Ghost of Tsushima, this period drama explores the wandering samurai and features Toshiro Mifune, the enigmatic sword-for-hire, freely roaming desolate towns overrun by grotesque rival criminal gangs.

Kwaidan (Masaki Kobayashi, 1964)

Masaki Kobayashi’s anthology of four classic ghost tales from old Japan is a beautiful creation, with its prowling camerawork from a supernatural perspective and exotic art design based on traditional samurai period architecture. The epic portrait of the legendary battle of Dan-no-ura of 1185, in which the warriors of the Heike clan were wiped out, is inspired by Japanese art such as 13th century emaki picture scrolls.

The Lone Wolf and Cub (Kozure okami, Kenji Misumi and others, 1972–1974) series + Shogun Assassin (US re-edit, 1980)

A masterless samurai roams through the landscapes of feudal Japan, trundling his infant son along with a hidden arsenal of deadly weapons, as they seek revenge against the evil warlord who killed his wife. With striking shots that burn into your brain, this six-film adaptation of a famous manga series is both highly stylish and incredibly violent.

Princess Mononoke (Mononoke-hime, Hayao Miyazaki, 1997)

Hayao Miyazaki’s gripping anime takes the late Muromachi Period (1336 to 1573) as its setting, adding a twist of fantasy to its richly drawn historical detail in an expansive tale of adventure set in a world caught in conflict between nature and industrialisation. It was the highest grossing Japanese film of all time upon its release.

Zatoichi (Takeshi Kitano, 2003)

Zatoichi is an itinerant blind master swordsman, with a penchant for gambling, who sliced and diced his way across Edo-era Japan (1603 to 1868). Righting wrongs while masquerading as a masseur, this is one of the most celebrated films within the ‘chanbara’ samurai action genre.

Goemon (Kazuaki Kiriya, 2009)

Kiriya’s visually dazzling action spectacle focuses on the power struggles that lead to the end of the Warring States era of the 16th century, and is one of a few films based on the mythic figure of Goemon Ishikawa, a Robin Hood like character famed for his ninja skills.

13 Assassins (Jusannin no shikaku, Takashi Miike, 2010)

Maverick cult filmmaker, Takashi Miike, breathed new life into the samurai film in his remake of a 1963 classic. Set in 1844, the film adheres closely to the Seven Samurai template, featuring a band of samurais who come together to overthrow a despotic lord for the greater good of society. Also another fan-favourite film which inspired Sucker Punch’s creation of Ghost of Tsushima, and Jin’s way of life.

Chie Kutsuwada then recommends 10 comics:

Phoenix (Osamu Tezuka, 1954 – 1988)

A classic saga that is built around fantasy with historical inspiration, this manga series explores both the future and past with one reoccurring theme – the characters’ fates all revolve around an immortal phoenix. The ultimate symbol of strength and renewal, this collection explores Japanese history and myths, particularly from the Yayoi Period (circa 300BC).

Dororo (Osamu Tezuka, 1967 – 1968)

This is a great mixture of sword fighting, dark human drama, and Japanese folklore set in the Sengoku era (1467 to 1615). The vengeful and determined protagonist hunts supernatural monsters with his katana sword, in order to regain his body parts that his father sacrificed to demons in exchange of fulfilling his greedy ambition.

Lone Wolf and Cub (Kazuo Koike and Goseki Kojima, 1970 – 1976)

Widely known as a classic samurai story with a twist from the 70’s, this manga sees a vengeful samurai travel with his son to seek revenge for his murdered wife – despite as a samurai, their teachings asking for patience, self-discipline and honor.

Usagi Yojimbo (Stan Sakai, 1984 – present)

Set in the early Edo period (1603 to 1868), this series sees Musashi as an anthropomorphic animal named Usagi Yoginbo. A light-hearted escape, the comics explore Japanese culture and folklore, such as Yokai (Japanese mystical creatures). It was even one of Sucker Punch’s inspirations for Ghost of Tsushima, thanks to its romantic tale of the wandering samurai.

Blade of the Immortal (Hiroaki Samura, 1993 – 2012)

This is a fictional action drama with a lot of exciting, bloody fighting. The samurai protagonist kills his wicked master, and at the fate of karma, becomes an immortal being at the hands of an old mysterious nun. But the story doesn’t end there – he is then hired as a bodyguard by a girl who is looking for a villain who killed her father, and their adventure begins.

Inuyasha (Rumiko Takahashi, 1996 – 2008)

A fun and exciting sword fighting fantasy, set in both the modern day and Sengoku era (1467- 1615), Inuyasha allows you to explore two different time periods through the eyes of the half demon protagonist, while having an adventure with a girl from 20th Century Japan.

Vagabond (Eiji Yoshikawa and Takehiko Inoue, 1998 – present)

A depiction of the heralded samurai from the 16th Century, Musashi Miyamoto, Vagabond will take you on a beautifully designed, artistic tale of the samurai’s philosophies and show you how Musashi matures into a great swordsman and philosopher.

Ooku: The Inner Chambers (Fumi Yoshinaga, 2004 – present)

Set in the Tokugawa shogunate era (1600 to 1868), this is one of the best alternative history mangas. The story starts with the male population slowly becoming extinct from an unknown disease, resulting in a powershift with women becoming ‘shoguns’ – military dictators. This manga explores the uniqueness of samurai hierarchy and how different society can be.

Hagakure: The Code of the Samurai (Tsunetomo Yamamoto, Sean Michael Wilson, and Chie Kutsuwada, 2010)

One of the best manga to understand Bushi-do – the codes of an honorable samurai. One code that will undoubtedly stick with you is that the way of a samurai is death and the preparedness to face death for right and honor.

The Book of Five Rings (Musashi Miyamoto, Sean Michael Wilson, and Chie Kutsuwada, 2012)

This is a manga version of one of the very last books Musashi wrote himself – it delves into the art of the swordsman, and he asserts that knowing the way of life is the way to gain virtue and strategy as a samurai. Ghost of Tsushima’s Jin, will go through a similar journey as he endures hardships to defend his home.

Ghost of Tsushima arrives on PlayStation 4 this Friday, July 17th.

Football attire isn’t something we normally cover here at God is a Geek, but this new kit reveal is anything but normal. In an inspired marketing decision, the new Southampton FC kit was revealed via video game. The charming little runner game involves dodging obstacles through the club’s history, and collecting various items and kit pieces for a high score.

“In a kit launch like never seen before, Southampton FC has created a retro 8-bit pixel style game to encourage fans to play their way to the ultimate 2020/21 kit reveal.

The goal of the game, which was produced by ‘Tech Company of the Year’ UNIT9, is simple; dribble your way through history collecting as many points as possible by picking up various objects, avoiding obstacles and ‘defying the odds’ along the way. And like all the best games, those who make it to the top of the leader board are in with a chance of winning a number of different prizes including the ultimate football gaming pack featuring a PS4 or Xbox and FIFA 2020.

And that’s not all, the game bolsters a number of hidden Easter Eggs guaranteed to appeal to wider footballing fans, such as appearance from fan favourite Matt Le Tissier, Kevin Keegan and even the infamous Ali Dia, who supposedly tricked his way into playing for Southampton FC for a total of 53 mins back in 1996!”

The game really is very charming, and packed full of references that fans of The Saints will appreciate. You can play it here, and don’t forget to submit your score for the chance to win some gaming goodies. I’m seriously impressed with this unique way to show off a footie kit, and I guess now I’m Southampton til I die. Next time I’m playing Fifa, I’m taking them to the top of the league.

Fans of one of Cartoon Network‘s biggest shows are in luck later this year, as Ben 10 Power Trip is announced for October 9th. With an emphasis on co-op, you can expect a lot of alien transformation as you help Ben save the world solo or with a buddy.

“Ben and his family are enjoying their European vacation… until evil magician Hex unleashes the power of four mysterious crystals! Only Ben 10 can break the curse – so get ready to transform into powerful aliens to battle enemies, solve puzzles and freely explore an exciting 3D world. It’s hero time!

With Gwen and Grandpa Max on your side, all the humor and rivalry from the Cartoon Network show is here. And since four arms are better than two, Kevin Levin is along for the adventure in local split-screen co-op. This is one Power Trip you’ll want to take again and again.”

I can’t imagine a better way to get a youngster into video games, than playing a co-op version of their favourite show. After the recent success of the Spongebob remaster, Ben 10 is ready to provide more cartoon fun this October.

Fans of horrific demons and tactical gameplay have something to look forward to next month, as Othercide releases July 28th on PC and console. Focus Home Interactive and Lightbulb Crew dropped this jaw dropping release date trailer today, which is a must watch.

“Descend into Humanity’s last hope. The Daughters, echoes of the greatest warrior to ever live, are all who stand before Suffering and death. Lead your army to battle with all the skill you can muster. Your prowess in combat will decide their fate, shape their abilities and personality. Make the toughest decision and sacrifice one to heal another – survivors will get stronger, ready to fight the next battle.”

Combat is an intricate dance of spectacular actions and counters: plan ahead of time and set up impressive chains of abilities to outsmart the enemy using the Dynamic Timeline System. Fight in epic boss battles against the sources of Suffering – dread creatures pulled from the worst of Humanity’s crimes against itself.”

There have been a lot of great strategy games in recent months (Desperados III and Gears Tactics have surpassed all expectations) but none are quite as breathtakingly gorgeous as Othercide looks. Horror and tactical RPG gameplay don’t often mix, abd I can’t wait to try the game for myself this July.

The post So far, The Last of Us Part II’s combat is deeper, with vastly improved AI appeared first on GodisaGeek.com.

]]>

It’s not an easy thing to do, really. How do you follow up a game that was adorned with ten out of ten scores, yet also almost universally considered to be a game that didn’t need a follow up. Indeed, previewing a game like The Last of Us Part II, that has this level of hype around it and comes from a developer that has delivered stories that are memorable and, frankly, rife for spoiling, isn’t easy either. In that respect, you won’t be hearing anything about the story of The Last of Us Part II here aside to say that this specific section of the game we can talk about as of now, is from around the middle of the game and focuses on Ellie’s journey to a Hospital in search of someone. If that sounds vague, good, because from here on we’re only talking about the combat.

Looking back on that first game, however, one thing that springs to mind is that, while I loved it, others found the story interesting but the gameplay less than stellar. While this two hour section of the game isn’t going to change non-believers to those that worship at the altar of Naughty Dog, it’s definitely a major step forward in a lot of ways.

Most crucially, the AI is so much better. In fact, even based on this small slice, it’s better than any Naughty Dog AI before it. The human combatants are no longer faceless goons, and if you put a shotgun slug into someone’s belly, they fall clenching their chest, screaming in pain before a death rattle gurgles to its gory conclusion. Then the shouting begins. If you’ve broken stealth in favour of loud combat, or just because you messed up, your victim’s death will be noticed and his or her friend will scream “Oh God, no, not Dave!”. This feels organic and as though these characters lived before you met them, contributing to the oppressive darkness that begs the question of who the bad guys even are in this adventure.

A screenshot from The Last of Us Part II (Preview)

But these enemies aren’t idiots, either. They will work as a team and flank you – quickly, I might add. Using the returning “Listen” mode that allows you to hunker down and hear enemies through walls or around corners, you may be trying to plot their course and before you know it the one you were tracking seems less important because another is bearing down on you, gun out, and BOOM, you’re on your back. You can choose to fire back from a knocked-down prone position, but you can also get up quickly, then run and hide, trying to regain stealth. Options are key to the combat in The Last of Us Part II.

Options like stealth, for example. It’s not a stretch to see Ellie in a different light as she, or you (the lines blur) sneak around the grass, in and out of cover, hiding in broken down buildings that offer darkness to ensconce yourself from sight. Then you grab someone, dragging them as their desperate muffled voice tries to scream, and then you shank them: neck slit, then chest stabbed. Early impressions are that these human enemies don’t have obvious set patterns. They are numerous, but they seem organised, like they are told “don’t be an AI routine, don’t make it easy for them to shank you!”, and they absolutely got the memo.

Ellie stealth in the grass from The Last of Us Part II

And boy, that’s just the humans, and just some of the options. I’ve not mentioned how throwing a glass bottle or brick (they return, obviously) at an enemy stuns them, or how if you do this while equipping a melee weapon there are unique kills that are brutal like I’ve never seen in a game. But like in The Last of Us, the true brilliance of the combat is in the encounters with the infected. Clickers scream into the darkness, while runners shuffle like zombies only somehow more feral. I’m not going to even risk spoiling anything at this stage, but while humans have guns, the fear a clicker instills is next-level. In the moments where I met a Clicker, The Last of Us: Part II felt like a horror game. Escaping with my life felt like an achievement and seeing the light after a scuffle with the infected felt like a reward, and not just because Naughty Dog has designed such a realistic, incredibly detailed world.

It’s helped in large part because the sound design is out of this world. The accompanying music is sensational, and if this brief section is anything to go by it’s possible Gustavo Santaolalla has bettered his work from the first game. But the audio design is beefy and hard. The thump of bat on bone is enough to make you wince, and the sound of gunfire pierces the desolation of the old world. Just from this small snippet of game, the audio is tantalising, offering glimpses of what might be coming.

But back to the stealth, though. As Ellie holds her grabbed foes, knife thrusting into them, her face contorts in a way I’ve never seen a videogame character before. It’s desperation and hatred, it’s that feeling of having a nightmare and wanting to scream but no sound is coming out. I was warned that this game could get dark, and in the short slice of it I can share with you right now, all I can really say is that, yes, it will get dark – but I am ready to face the darkness.

Today, Sony has announced new release dates for two of its huge upcoming first-party games, Ghost of Tsushima and The Last of Us Part II. Naughty Dog’s sequel to 2013’s post apocalyptic drama is now set to come out June 19, whilst Sucker Punch’s Samurai action adventure follows a month later on July 17.

In an official blog post earlier today, Hermen Hulst, Head of Worldwide Studios at SIE addressed the significant impact of Coronavirus on the company, and that they find themselves “having to adapt to today’s ever-changing environment.”

Hulst continued, “I want to personally congratulate and thank both the teams at Naughty Dog and Sucker Punch Productions on their achievements, as we know it’s not an easy feat to reach the finish line under these circumstances. Both teams have worked hard to deliver world-class experiences, and we can’t wait to see what you think of them when they release in just a few short months.”

Last month, Naughty Dog postponed The Last of Us Part II indefinitely due to the pandemic, but it looks as though a final release date has been settled on. As for Ghost of Tsushima, it seemed likely it would receive a slight delay. Hopefully, these new release dates give people something to look forward to as the world continues to carry on through these difficult times.

For fans of Sega Mega Drive beat-em-ups, the time has finally come. With the last game releasing in 1994, the long awaited sequel Streets of Rage 4 is coming April 30th. It launches on Xbox GamePass for users of the service, and will also be available on PS4, Switch and PC.

“Streets of Rage 4 is the franchise’s first mainline entry in more than 25 years, reuniting Axel, Blaze, and Adam while introducing fresh fighters and combat depth, an arrestingly fluid hand-drawn art style, and an all-new scenario as well as city boroughs to crack skulls in. With an original soundtrack from Olivier Derivière incorporating worldwide talent, including massive contributions from series composers Yūzō Koshiro and Motohiro Kawashima, Streets of Rage 4’s pairing of classic elements with distinctive modern direction makes this highly anticipated return the fight of a lifetime.”

The beat-em-up genre gets ignored far too often, so the return of Streets of Rage is going to make a lot of people happy. After all the characters were revealed, it was only a matter of time before we got a release date. I still have the original trilogy installed on my Xbox One, and I think I’ll be installing the 4th game later this month.

After arriving on Switch and PC last year, Oddworld lead Developer’s game Switch ‘N’ Shoot coming to PS4 and Xbox One this summer.

“Switch ‘N’ Shoot is a score-based arcade shoot ’em up with a twist…

ONE BUTTON fires your weapon but switches your direction at the same time!

This simple rule forces you to think on your feet and time your shots carefully. One misplaced shot and you’re space-toast.

Switch ‘N’ Shoot is small and simple… fast and challenging… and annoyingly addictive. Your run can be over in mere seconds, but you can instantly jump straight back in for another go. Work your way up the leaderboards, learn to Hyperdrive, and take the fight to the invading Incubators!”

Those intrigued can buy Switch ‘N’ Shoot now for only £3.99 on Switch, or wait a few months to swap some weapons on the other home consoles.

Sony has announced today that it’s offering two free games (well, technically it’s four) as part of its new Play At Home initiative. Aimed at helping people stay home during the Covid-19 pandemic, these games don’t require a subscription, they’re free to keep as long as you redeem them.

Between Thursday, April 16th and Wednesday, May 6th, Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection and Journey will be free to claim. Yours to keep. Just be aware that downloads may take a little longer than usual.

On top of that, Sony is also helping out its independent development partners in this difficult time. Sony says:

Independent developers are vital to the heart and soul of the gaming community and we understand the hardships and financial struggles that many smaller gaming studios are facing. With that, SIE has developed a fund to support them during this time. We have earmarked $10 million to support our independent development partners. More information about the fund, including participation criteria, will be made available soon.

With Resident Evil 3 out now, your next dose of survival horror isn’t far behind. Daymare: 1998 from developer Invader Studios is already out on PC, but is due for release on consoles at the end of April. Perhaps best know for developing the now-cancelled Resident Evil 2 Reborn, the fan-made remake of Resident Evil 2 before the official remake happened, Invader Studios has channeled that love of the genre into its own third-person horror game.

Daymare: 1998 is currently available to pre-order digitally on Xbox One, but is also due for a physical release on PS4 in the US and Europe, complete with the Black Edition.

The Daymare: 1998 Black Edition will include:

 • Game disc
 • Character cards
 • Stickers
 • Collectible pins (at selected retailers)

However, the publisher does state that physical copies may be affected by the current pandemic, but says:

The publishers’ distribution partners Meridiem Games (EU) and GS2 Games (US) will keep on doing their best in getting the boxes to the customers as close to the planned release date as possible.

Daymare: 1998 is out now on PC, and coming to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on April 28th.
