Guerrilla Games has released a brand new video introducing Seyka, one of the new characters set to feature in Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores. Seyka (voiced by Kylie Liya Page) is described as “an ambitious marine of the Quen tribe who has stepped up to help her people survive,” and will play a significant role along with Aloy as she fights against a sinister new threat.

Travel beyond the Forbidden West as Aloy’s story continues. Encounter new machines and a compelling new story.

South of the Tenakth Clan Lands, millennia of volcanic eruptions and violent seismic activity have carved the ruins of Los Angeles into a treacherous archipelago.

Experience the next chapter of Horizon Forbidden West as Aloy pursues a sinister new threat to the planet, hidden among these dangerous, untamed wilds.

The Burning Shores DLC contains additional content for Horizon Forbidden West, including new characters and experiences in a stunning yet hazardous new area.

To enter the Burning Shores, you must complete the main quest (up to and including Singularity) in the PS5 version of Horizon Forbidden West. Following the main quest, the player will receive a call over Aloy’s Focus, beginning the DLC.

In the video introducing Seyka, various people who’ve worked on the game talk about the new character’s impact on the story, with Ashley Birch saying that Aloy may have met her match. Kylie also talks about how her first day on set was, and how much of an honour it is to join the franchise, calling Seyka a “badass.” It’s not long now until Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores releases, and players will soon get to see both Aloy and Seyka in the highly anticipated endgame content.

You can watch the new video that introduces players to Seyka in Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores below:

Fans have been asking for it for a long time now, but from today Discord voice chat works on PlayStation 5 for beta users, with the full rollout for everyone else due later in the year.

This follows the announcement in January 2022 that you can link your PSN account to Discord and show what game you’re playing on PS4 or PlayStation 5, but this beta really is the one that users have been wanting for a long time.

You can check out a trailer promoting the integration, below:

We’re beyond excited to announce that starting today for PS5 beta testers (and coming soon for all PS5 owners), you’ll be able to use Discord voice chat with your friends on desktop, web, console, or mobile using your PS5.

Chat with your Discord friends about anything-and-everything while on your PS5, or come together and enjoy multiplayer games, no matter if people are playing on PC, mobile, or a different Discord-supported console.

Today, Discord voice chat on PS5 starts for those enrolled in the PS5 System Software Beta Program, with expanded availability on the horizon. Keep on reading through this article to learn how it’ll work when you get access to the PS5 console’s upcoming Discord voice chat integration.

If you’re in the PS5 beta, and updated to the latest software, you’ll need to “grab your controller and head into Settings > Users and Accounts > Linked Services. Here, you’ll find a new option to link your Discord account”. Then it’s a simple case of linking via a QR code and an eight digit code to get it all finished. If you’ve linked it previously, you’ll have to do it again for voice chat.

It looks handy, and we’ve used it in the past for games like Monster Hunter Rise, but with so many games going cross play, it’s going to be excellent to be able to use features like this across devices.

Voice chat for Discord on PS5 rolls out today for beta users, and is “coming soon” for everyone else.

The post There’s a giant real life God of War Leviathan Axe now in London appeared first on GodisaGeek.com.

As part of Sony’s latest PlayStation ad campaign, there are now real world items from games like God of War strewn around the globe.

Information about this campaign started to come out over the weekend, with reddit users spotting adverts for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and Horizon Forbidden West on Australian TV, showing real-life version of the games, but Sony has now confirmed the “Live from PS5” campaign, and has sent us some images of the Leviathan Axe from God of War that’s currently located in London’s Southbank for today (January 30th) and tomorrow (January 31st).

It looks absolutely massive, so my old man brain is wondering where they’ll store it when this campaign is over. Sony says that there are other locations where this kind of thing is happening, but didn’t detail what items, only that they will be taking place “in major global regions, from the Americas to Europe, Asia and the Middle East”. It does appear that the Horizon one might be a Watcher, as the ad (linked above) shows Aloy pulling something from what looks like a Watcher’s mouth.

Likewise, the Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 advert shows a load of webs connecting two buildings, so we’d guess that is what the Spider-Man item/thing will be. All the ads we’ve seen are in the form of a news broadcast, stating “This is Live from PS5”. The Reddit users reported both the adverts as being shown during an ESPN2 live broadcast.

The official trailer suggests there will also be Final Fantasy 16, Ratchet & Clank, Returnal, The Last of Us, Ghost of Tsushima, and even Destiny based items in other places in the world.

As for the God of War Axe, PlayStation says that “the Leviathan Axe appears wedged into the ground as though Kratos himself has thrown it, spreading a coating of ice and snow and breaking the ground around the impact area”.

The Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 advert we mentioned also seems to confirm the release date of somewhere between September and November this year, as the ad suggests it’s coming in “Spring” and that’s when that season is in Australia.

Project Leonardo is an accessibility controller kit for PlayStation 5 https://www.godisageek.com/2023/01/project-leonardo-is-an-accessibility-controller-kit-for-playstation-5/ Thu, 05 Jan 2023 09:45:31 +0000 https://www.godisageek.com/?p=271855 More info is coming soon.

The post Project Leonardo is an accessibility controller kit for PlayStation 5 appeared first on GodisaGeek.com.

]]>

During Sony’s CES 2023 conference, PlayStation announced Project Leonardo, a new “highly customisable accessibility controller kit” for PS5. CEO Jim Ryan said this will allow “players with disabilities to play more easily, more comfortably, and for longer periods”.

Sony has had conversations with the likes of AbleGamers, SpecialEffect, and Stack Up, and Senior Vice President, Platform Experience, Hideaki Nishino says “we’ve designed a highly configurable controller that works in tandem with many third-party accessibility accessories and integrates with the PS5 console to open up new ways of gaming. It is built to address common challenges faced by many players with limited motor control, including difficulty holding a controller for long periods, accurately pressing small clusters of buttons or triggers, or positioning thumbs and fingers optimally on a standard controller”.

Over on the PS Blog, the key features have been listed, as follows:

Hardware customizations. Project Leonardo for PS5 is a canvas for gamers to craft their own play experience. It includes a robust kit of swappable components, including a variety of analog stick caps and buttons in different shapes and sizes.

Players can use these components to craft a wide array of control layouts. And the distance of the analog stick from the game pad can be adjusted to suit the player’s preference. These components allow players to find a configuration that works for their strength, range of motion, and particular physical needs.

Project Leonardo is an accessibility controller for PlayStation 5

Software customizations. On the PS5 console players have an array of options to tailor their Project Leonardo play experience:

 • The controller’s buttons can be programmed to any supported function and multiple buttons can be mapped to the same function. Conversely, players can map two functions (like “R2” + “L2”) onto the same button.
 • Players can store their programmed button settings as control profiles and easily switch between them by pressing the profile button.
 • Up to three control profiles can be stored and accessed by the player from their PS5 console at any time.

Project Leonardo can be used as a standalone controller or paired with additional Project Leonardo or DualSense wireless controllers. Up to two Project Leonardo controllers and one DualSense wireless controller can be used together as a single virtual controller, allowing players to mix and match devices to fit their particular gameplay needs, or to play collaboratively with others.

For example, players can augment their DualSense controller with a Project Leonardo controller or use two Project Leonardo controllers on their own. A friend or family member can also assist by helping to control the player’s game character with a DualSense controller or a second Project Leonardo controller. The controllers can be dynamically turned on or off and used in any combination.

Project Leonardo is expandable through four 3.5mm AUX ports to support a variety of external switches and third-party accessibility accessories. This enables users to integrate specialty switches, buttons or analog sticks with the Project Leonardo controller. The external accessories can be dynamically connected or disconnected, and each can be configured to act like any other button.

So Morimoto, Designer, Sony Interactive Entertainment, said “Project Leonardo is part of the PS5 product family and is based on the same design concept. We were inspired by the idea of all players enjoying the world of PlayStation together. Our team tested over a dozen designs with accessibility experts, looking for approaches that would help address key challenges to effective controller use. We finally settled on a ‘split controller’ design that allows near free-form left/right thumbstick repositionability, can be used without needing to be held, and features very flexible button and stick cap swapping.

Because players can customize Project Leonardo according to their needs, there is no one ‘right’ form factor. We want to empower them to create their own configurations. The controller can also flexibly accept combinations of accessibility accessories to create a unique aesthetic. I am excited that the design will be completed through collaboration with players rather than presenting them with a single form factor”.

The controller is currently “in development” as Sony gets feedback from the community, so it’s likely a release date, price, etc will be announced later down the line.

The post Gran Turismo 7 getting a PlayStation VR 2 mode at launch appeared first on GodisaGeek.com.

]]>

Speaking at Sony’s CES 2023 presentation, CEO Jim Ryan has confirmed Gran Turismo 7 will getting a free PlayStation VR 2 update for launch.

It may not be the biggest surprise, given that GT Sport also got a VR option for PlayStation 4, but there will be high hopes for the higher spec PSVR 2 that is due out on February 22nd, with its 2000×2040 per eye resolution and OLED screens. It’s worth noting that the Gran Turismo 7 VR update won’t be a separate game, instead it’ll be a mode within the original game, which will be updated at some point during the next month to six weeks, ahead of the PSVR 2 launch.

What isn’t fully known as of yet, however, is if the entire game is playable in VR or it’ll just be a mode within the game. As noted by GTPlanet, the footage shown off does reveal that it’ll at least feature 12-car racing, though the suggestion elsewhere is that the game is fully playable in VR.

Gran Turismo 7 is currently on sale as well, at 43% off, with the offer ending in a few days (January 7th), so if you’re planning on grabbing it for that reason, it might not be a bad shout to do so ahead of time.

At the same presentation, Ryan also revealed a sneak peak at the Gran Turismo movie, with a trailer which you can see below.

During the presentation, we also found out that Beat Saber is coming to PSVR 2 as well, which will please the legion of fans behind that title. Despite being owned by Meta (Facebook), there was also a PlayStation VR version for PS4, so it’s perhaps not the biggest surprise that this has come to pass.

Elsewhere, Resident Evil Village will also have a VR mode on day one of the PlayStation VR 2’s launch, and along with Horizon Call of the Mountain, it does seem that launch line-up is looking pretty good so far.

Game of the Year 2022: God of War Ragnarok https://www.godisageek.com/2022/12/game-of-the-year-2022-god-of-war-ragnarok/ Sat, 31 Dec 2022 16:00:43 +0000 https://www.godisageek.com/?p=271600 Kratos does it again.

The post Game of the Year 2022: God of War Ragnarok appeared first on GodisaGeek.com.

]]>

After 12+ hours of Game of the Year 2022 podcasts deliberations, not only did we all stay friends, but we decided on the best game of the year, and it’s God of War Ragnarok.

Here’s what the team said about God of War Ragnarok, the GodisaGeek Game of the Year 2022. It even got picked a few times in our Community Choice award, too! It dominated our day four awards when it came to best story and best moment, but also got shouts in best visuals, best audio, and was generally received well by everyone on staff.

Mick Fraser: Ragnarok is an exceptional video game. Of that there is no doubt. This is a game that positively thrums with emotion, and reflects quality in every facet of its design, from the tremendous combat to the groundbreaking cinematic direction. I cannot fault it, nor would I wish to. What Sony Santa Monica achieved with Kratos in particular here is nothing short of staggering. The characterisation is a new benchmark in terms of how to steer an arc, and it will be a long, long time before anyone tops it.

Chris Hyde: Frankly, God of War: Ragnarok is nothing short of a masterpiece. The addictive, well-executed gameplay lands on just the right side of accessible, with the light-touch puzzles and checklist of collectibles successfully dragging you into every area, tantalising you with everything it has to offer. The combat is initially simple and intuitive but the skill trees and upgrade systems give you so many versatile options to suit your preferences, or indeed, your curiosity. Traversal is efficient, satisfying, and respectful of your time, further encouraging you onto your next endeavour.

And then we move from the well-executed to the frankly astonishing. The benchmark-setting factors of God of War: Ragnarok. Visually this game is outstanding. The attention to detail in the character models, their facial animations, and the way they move, all sets the standard for others to follow in the future. The voice acting is also superb, particularly from the returning characters, and the writing gives it all meaning. These all come together to weave a heartfelt, believable story comprised of woven interactions between Kratos and Atreus that at times made me genuinely weep. You’re immersed, you’re fighting, and you are Kratos and Atreus. I wondered how Santa Monica would top 2018’s God of War. What they’ve produced in Ragnarok is another leap forward and everything you could want in the sequel.

Game of the Year 2022 GOTY 2022

Chris White: God of War Ragnarok is the most ambitious video game I’ve ever played, and more than deserves to be in my list for Game of the Year 2022. It’s story blew my mind, and the emotional depth it carries is unlike anything I’ve seen before. Kratos and Atreus’ relationship, the death of popular characters, the staggering scope of its battles, and the visually incredible worlds I explored. Honestly, it never skipped a beat, from its storytelling to its level design. Not only did it look great and featured some of the best writing to date, it succeeded in being such a fun game to play. The combat was layered and ever-evolving, the traversal was enjoyable, and throughout every step of my 30-hour playthrough, I was left in awe at the work Santa Monica has put in.

Adam Cook: After everything I said about it in 2018, the only shock to me is how good this ended up being. With emotive moments that left me borderline broken, Ragnarok did was the previous title did: for a while it left me unable to get back into anything else. I tried to just “keep playing it” but I wanted more and more. The story is one of the best I’ve seen in a game, with a redemption ark unlike anything that’s come before it, with moment after moment of well told, brilliant story beats.

But it’s the character development. The relationship between father and son: the moment a small child becomes someone you trust to have your back. Everything about God of War Ragnarok made me feel like the developer knew exactly what it was doing. This is another masterpiece of production, direction, writing, world building, design… I could lament the brilliance for a long time. It’s number one with a bullet.

And that’s it, congrats again to Sony and Santa Monica Studio, and here’s to another great year in 2023.

At The Game Awards 2023, Kojima Productions announced that Death Stranding 2 was officially in development, though that’s a working name for now.

A four minute teaser trailer was also released, which frankly, is fascinating, and shows off some of the returning cast, looking even more well motion captured. It’s also clear that Death Stranding 2 has jumped a few years into the future, as Sam Bridges has very grey hair, and the world seems somehow more apocalyptic than ever. The trailer mostly shows of Léa Seydoux with a baby, and features some fairly dark imagery.

It’s also confirmed that the cast will include returning members of Death Stranding, such as Norman Reedus,, Elle Fanning, Shioli Kutsuna, and Troy Baker. One of those is… surprising, given how the story of the original game panned out, but hey, let’s wait and see what happens there.

The original game also came to PC, with the Director’s Cut, which Chris White reviewed on PS5, saying: “Death Stranding Director’s Cut is a phenomenal game. It always was, but with these additional changes, it reaches another level. The technological improvements make it more immersive, and the fast loading times are a godsend. The new modes are OK, but the new equipment are what make it special. All the new content is entwined with the original experience, so it gives old players a reason to head back to the beginning and start again. For those who never played DS when it hit PS4, there really is no better time than now. A wonderful soundtrack, a powerful story, and enjoyable gameplay made better thanks to the additions mean Kojima Productions found a way to make a great game greater”.

Death Stranding 2 is in development for PS5, and currently only is a working title.

Sony has lifted the lid on the pricing, launch date, bundles, and software available for the PlayStation VR2, or PSVR2 as most will call it.

First up, PSVR2 is launching on February 22nd, 2023, and on that same date you can also get the PSVR2 Sense controller charging station.

Price wise, there are bundles, and they are as follows.

PSVR2 Bundles and Prices

PSVR2 bundle: 549.99 / €599.99 / £529.99 / ¥74,980 recommended retail price (including tax for GBP, EUR, and JPY). Includes PS VR2 headset, PS VR2 Sense controllers and stereo headphones

Horizon Call of the Mountain bundle: $599.99 / €649.99 / £569.99 / ¥79,980 recommended retail price (including tax for GBP, EUR, and JPY). Includes PlayStation Store voucher code for Horizon Call of the Mountain, PS VR2 headset, PS VR2 Sense controllers, and stereo headphones

PlayStation VR2 Sense controller charging station: $49.99 / €49.99 / £39.99 / ¥5,480 recommended retail price (including tax for GBP, EUR, and JPY). Players can charge the PS VR2 Sense controller through a simple click-in design, without having to connect to a PS5 console – freeing up the console’s USB ports.

Starting this month, games like Horizon Call of the Mountain will be available foZr pre-order, but Sony says more information will be coming soon.

During this initial launch phase for our next-gen headset, players in the U.S., U.K., France, Germany, Belgium, Netherlands and Luxembourg will initially be able to pre-order PlayStation VR2 solely through PlayStation’s online store at direct.playstation.com. Pre-orders will begin on November 15, and players may begin to register for pre-orders starting today. Orders from direct.playstation.com for PlayStation VR2 headsets and bundles will ship throughout the week of launch.

In other markets, PlayStation VR2 will be sold at participating retailers, with pre-orders beginning on November 15. Information will be provided through participating local retailers in these regions.

PSVR2 Specifications

Sony says it has “created the PS VR2 headset with comfort in mind, in a slightly slimmer and lighter design compared to our previous headset. We’ve also included an integrated vent for extra air flow, and a lens adjustment dial for a more customized feel. We hope players will enjoy this new design”.

While the price is high, for this level of VR headset, it’s not as bad as it might seem. Lesser headsets are out there that cost more, if that’s any comfort to you.

The post God of War Ragnarok is already showing signs of greatness | Hands-on preview appeared first on GodisaGeek.com.

]]>

After almost six hours with God of War Ragnarok, it probably won’t be a huge surprise to say that already, the second part of Kratos and Atreus’ story is proving to be yet another masterpiece. It’s continuing what the 2018 God of War did so well by introducing small yet significant changes in combat and traversal, paired with a story that is already keeping me hooked as to where it’s going, and visuals that are making the most of the PlayStation 5’s technology in every way possible.

In God of War, Kratos and Atreus made decisions that angered the Gods. It was not their intention, yet doing what needed to be done, Odin, Freya, and Thor are displeased. Not only are they dealing with their wrath, Fimbulwinter has set in, and a great winter has engulfed the nine realms, paving a way to Ragnarok. As grand as the story is, this is and always has been a tale of parenthood and the struggles of raising a child in the wake of a parent’s death, albeit with significantly extreme circumstances surrounding it.

God of War Ragnarok

We watched Atreus grow from being just a boy, and so far, Kratos hasn’t even uttered the word, highlighting just how his son has grown and changed since the first game. Bare in mind this is a completely spoiler free preview, however, it’s very clear that something is going on in the body of the teenager. As always, Kratos is trying to balance protecting him and readying him for battle, doing his best as a father while knowing how to make sure he is prepared for the dangers that lie ahead.

Speaking of dangers, there are lots of enemies in God of War Ragnarok that litter the path to the great war. Soldiers that wield the power of the Bifrost, reptilian savages that rise from the swamps, huge dragon-like beasts that dwell in the water, raiders, draugrs, trolls, and more. I’ve dealt with the dangers of both Midgard and Svartalfheim, and both harbour tough foes that require complete focus to eradicate. Death is a given unless you make full use of your powers, favour your shield to block and parry, and dodge when an enemy launches a barrage of damage towards you.

Your Leviathan Axe is one of your primary weapons. It can be imbued with frost damage for devastating attacks, and once again, it can be launched towards enemies and recalled to deal with creatures in the distance. New abilities can be unlocked with XP, as well as additional permanent boosts to damage and defence, making it an incredible part of your arsenal. The Blades of Chaos are now with you from the beginning, and can also be used to dish out punishment, available for upgrading just like your axe. You can also use a shield for blocking attacks, as well as slamming it into the ground to knock back enemies.

God of War Ragnarok

Atreus uses his bow for additional support, becoming more of an ally to Kratos when in battle. With all the brutality you find yourself engaging in, your weapons play a pivotal role in getting around, solving puzzles, and generally progressing through the realms. The axe can freeze water and lock mechanisms in place like before, but the Blades of Chaos are also a massive part of solving environmental puzzles and getting around now. You can use them to swing from one place to another, yank obstacles out of place, as well as burn blockades of brambles and bushes that stand in your way.

Everything at your disposal serves a purpose, and there’s always something there for you to solve. Atreus can now use an ability to remove glowing teal objects which help both in puzzles and combat. One puzzle had me freezing water to change its flow so it could turn huge water wheels, but I also needed to use Atreus’ ability in tandem with my axe to bring a moving platform into my path so I could swing onto it using the Blades of Chaos, deep in the dwarven mines of Svartalfheim. Everywhere you go in God of War Ragnarok, there’s always a problem to overcome, whether it’s a blocked path or a bunch of enemies to destroy.

Outside of progressing through the story, there are lots of collectables to find, too. Odin’s ravens are flying around the world for you to strike with your axe again; artefacts are hidden everywhere and a brief story supports each one, told by Mimir; chests that can be opened by lighting runic fires nearby; and more. Crafting materials for upgrading your weapons and armour can be found in chests and from fallen foes, along with hacksilver to be spent on upgrading and buying new weapons and armour when visiting Brok and Sindri, and XP in gained when defeating enemies. You can get new abilities that help greatly in the fight, which can be made more powerful by spending hard-earned experience, too.

God of War Ragnarok bow

The writing in God of War Ragnarok so far is excellent. Returning and new characters are all fleshed out, and story beats are just as impactful as before thanks to a great voice cast that deliver their lines with aplomb. I’d already shed a tear within the first 15 minutes, but there’re still plenty of laughs to be had thanks to the wise talking head of Mimir, who does a stunning job of relating just how the player is feeling with intelligent and astute dialogue. It’s also worth pointing out that the environments look stunning, filled with incredible attention to detail. I’ve only seen two realms so far, but already, I’m left in awe of what I’ve seen.

The smooth transitions between cutscenes and gameplay is ever present, and I’ve been caught off guard by knowing what is a playable moment and what isn’t. The grand and bombastic nature of these cutscenes are not only on par with the original, but in certain places so far, they even excelled beyond it. God of War Ragnarok has already given me so much to enjoy through it’s excellent gameplay and engaging story. The writing and acting is brilliant, and the visuals are on another level. I’m still getting used to all the upgrades, rune placements, and abilities, but that’ll come with time. If there was a slither of doubt that this wouldn’t be as good as the original, I’d happily say at this point it would be safe to cast them aside.

God of War Ragnarok is coming to PS4 and PS5 on November 9th, 2022.

The post Sackboy: A Big Adventure is coming to PC in October appeared first on GodisaGeek.com.

It’s one of the worst kept secrets in gaming right now, but Sackboy: A Big Adventure has been confirmed for PC release on October 27th.

Following on from God of War early this year, then Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered, with Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection out just before it, Sony is slowly bringing some of the top tier PlayStation 4 and 5 titles to PC, which often includes versions that work perfectly (and are verified) on Steam Deck.

Sony has confirmed that the Sackboy: A Big Adventure is getting some serious graphical options, with the following features included:

 • 4K with target @ 120FPS1. The stunning patchwork of Craftworld is rendered in beautiful 4K detail.
 • Deep Learning Super Sampling. NVIDIA DLSS2 increases graphics performance using dedicated processors found only on GeForce RTX GPUs, boosting frame rates with uncompromised image quality.
 • VRR. Variable refresh rate support makes Sackboy more responsive than ever.2
 • Widescreen: the game supports a wide range of display ratios, including ultrawide 21:9.3

Here’s the minimum specs for the PC version, too:

Sony has also added DualSense support for the PC version of Sackboy: A Big Adventure, but if you do want to use keyboard & mouse, that’s supported in the game as well as with the UI. There are achievements, too, whether you play on Steam or on Epic Games Store. If you pre-order (again, on either storefront) you will get four special PlayStation Icon costumes and emotes: Jin, Sam Porter Bridges, Connor, Deacon St. John.

Chris White gave the game a 9/10 when it was released in November 2020, saying “Sackboy: A Big Adventure features some great platforming across gorgeous levels, with plenty to do and collect along the way. The music is a lovely touch to a rich and fulfilling adventure, and playing with others is the best way to enjoy it. There is so much customisation, with plenty of outfits and colour palettes to change your look as much as you want. This is yet another happy place in gaming, and we all know how important that is right now”.

Sackboy: A Big Adventure is out now for PS4 and PS5, and comes to PC on October 27th.

PlayStation adds 1440p support to PS5 for beta testers https://www.godisageek.com/2022/07/playstation-adds-1440p-support-to-ps5-for-beta-testers/ Thu, 28 Jul 2022 09:22:21 +0000 https://www.godisageek.com/?p=265780 Also coming: Gamelists, and more.

The post PlayStation adds 1440p support to PS5 for beta testers appeared first on GodisaGeek.com.

One of the features some PS5 players have been missing, is the ability to max out their 1440p monitor, but Sony is now trialling this via a beta test.

Getting a PS5 1440p update is going to please a lot of people who use monitors for their gaming, and Sony has detailed this beta update, as follows:

1440p HDMI Video Output

 • The PS5 beta introduces support for 1440p HDMI video output, enabling players to choose an additional visual setting on compatible PC monitors and TVs.
 • If the game you’re playing supports 1440p rendering you can experience native 1440p output on your display.
 • Or, if you’re playing a game with a higher native resolution like 4K, then you may benefit from improved anti-aliasing through supersampling down to 1440p output.
 • You can check if your HDMI device is compatible by selecting “Test 1440p Output” under “Screen and Video” options within system settings.

PlayStation adds 1440p

Another new update is the “Gamelists” function, described thus:

 • In your Game Library you can now create gamelists, which make organizing your games even easier.
 • To start, go to the [Your Collection] tab and select [Create Gamelist]. Choose games to add to your gamelist, then decide what to name it.
 • You can have up to 15 gamelists and 100 games per gamelist. All games under the “Your Collection” tab of your Game Library can be added to a gamelist, including disc, digital and streaming titles.*** You can also add the same game to multiple gamelists.

PS5 update: the best of the rest

There’s also the option to compare 3D and Stereo audio to see which you prefer, and an update to the activity system which lets you literally click “resume activity” and it’ll take you back to where you were as fast as possible.

New social features round off the beta update, allowing you to “request share screen”, which is exactly what it sounds like. There’s also a “joinable game notification” which, if you join a party, tells you if a player is playing a game you can join.

It’s worth noting that PS5 beta access is available to selected participants in the U.S., Canada, Japan, U.K., Germany and France, but if the features work well, it’ll roll out to everyone else in a main update.

The post New PlayStation Plus service set to roll out from June appeared first on GodisaGeek.com.

]]>

After months of speculation, Sony has officially announced its brand new PlayStation Plus subscription service which will be rolling out from June. On the official PlayStation blog, Jim Ryan, President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, revealed that PS Plus and PS Now were combining to become a brand new service “that provides more choice to customers across three membership tiers globally.”

The three tiers include various benefits that range from the standard cloud storage and online multiplayer of the current PS Plus package, to a catalogue of over 700 games from every generation so far.

The new PlayStation Plus tiers

PlayStation Plus Essential

This is the first tier that is pretty much what players are getting now as part of the standard PS Plus. It’ll cost £6.99 per month, £19.99 quarterly, and £49.99 yearly. Players will get two monthly downloadable games, exclusive discounts, cloud storage for saved games, and online multiplayer access.

PlayStation Plus Extra

The next tier involves all the benefits of the Essential tier, along with a catalogue of up to 400 games from PS4 and PS5. These will include both first-party and third-party titles, and will be downloadable. PlayStation Plus Extra will cost £10.99 per month, £31.99 quarterly, and £83.99 yearly.

PlayStation Plus Premium

The final tier is where the biggest and best benefits come in. Along with the Essential and Extra benefits, players will get up to 340 more games including classics from the PSOne, PS2, and PSP era, available to download or stream. PS3 games will also be available, but only via cloud streaming. It will also include time-limited game trials so that players can try selected games before purchasing. Premium will cost £13.49 per month, £39.99 quarterly, and £99.99 yearly.

There will also be another service called PlayStation Plus Deluxe for certain markets where cloud streaming isn’t available. This tier will be available for a lower price, but no details regarding the cost have been unveiled at this time.

What games are on offer?

Although there are no details regarding what games will feature from the older generations, Ryan has said that they’re “working closely with our imaginative developers from PlayStation Studios and third-party partners to include some of the best gaming experiences available with a library that will be regularly refreshed.” However, it has been announced that Death Stranding, God of War, Marvel’s Spider-Man, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Mortal Kombat 11, and Returnal will be available at launch on the Extra and Premium tiers.

When the new services launch, PlayStation Now subscribers will migrate to PlayStation Plus Premium with no increase to their current subscription fee. They will initially launch the new PlayStation Plus from June in Asia, with North America, Europe, and the rest of world gaining access by the end of the first half of 2022. Although it aims to be a competitor to Xbox’s Game Pass service, it will not offer Day One releases for upcoming first-party games. More details are set to be announced over the coming months, but it sounds like Sony are putting some serious work into evolving their subscription services to match the fantastic work Microsoft has done with theirs.

Sony has revealed that the first State of Play for 2022 will focus on the highly anticipated Gran Turismo 7.

We’re just a few months away from the release of the latest edition of Sony’s legendary racing title. The official PlayStation Blog promises to showcase 30 minutes of footage from Polyphony Digital’s stunning racer.

Just last year, Sony dedicated an entire State of Play to Arkane’s time-bending thriller Deathloop, giving us – at the time – our best and deepest look at the shooter right before its release. Following on from that, we can expect something similar for Gran Turismo 7.

Sony announce a special Gran Turismo 7 State of Play

First released on PS1 in 1997, Gran Turismo was once the champion of racing games. Some maintain it still is – or at least, can be again. GT7 is the 16th title in the series, including spin-offs and region-locked exclusives, but the 8th mainline release following 2017’s Gran Turismo Sport.

Considered by many to be one of the most hardcore race-driving simulators available, GT7 has some big shoes to fill when it releases in March this year. With Horizon Forbidden West due in February and God of War Ragnarok still slated for a release this year, GT7 joins a strong line-up of exclusives for Sony’s console in 2022.

If past releases are anything to go by, Polyphony Digital will be aiming to make Gran Turismo 7 a shining example of what the PS5 is capable of. Previous entries have always been known to push the graphical hardware with impressive results.

You can watch the State of Play on February 2nd via Twitch or YouTube at the following times:

2pm Pacific
5pm Eastern
11pm CET
10pm GMT

In the meantime, check out the most recent trailer below for a taste of what to expect during the event.

Gran Turismo 7 is scheduled for release on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 on March 4, 2022.

]]>

As the release date of Guerilla and Sony’s upcoming epic sequel, Horizon Forbidden West, fast approaches, the developer has revealed an exciting new trailer and key art depicting some of the new and existing characters Aloy will meet in her quest to save the world once more.

With her new adventure taking her into the titular West, Aloy will meet a host of new enemies, allies and murderous machines. Alongside returning friends like Erend and Varl, she’ll enter a land beset by war. There, the enigmatic Sylens (played by the exceptional Lance Reddick) appears to be sowing the seeds of conflict for his own gains.

Horizon Forbidden West

Released in 2018, Horizon Zero Dawn was one of the best games of the previous generation, with the Frozen Wilds DLC continuing Aloy’s story a year later. Now that the world finds itself in the grip of a deadly blight, and beset by rampaging machines, Forbidden West will build on Aloy’s adventure going forward and her quest for answers to the mysteries of the past.

The thrilling new story trailer shows these new characters (including Carrie-Ann Moss’s mysterious Tilda, pictured below), as well as some of the challenges Aloy will face. From huge machines of war to a marauding tribe led by the fierce Regalla, it seems the whole world is against her – which is great for us, because it means we get to explore this deadly new realm and all its dangers.

Horizon - Tilda

Guerilla have also released new key art depicting some of the people and environments set to feature in the epic sequel when it releases exclusively on Sony’s consoles next month.

Horizon Forbidden West

Check out the brand new story trailer below for a taste of what’s to come in Horizon Forbidden West.

Horizon Forbidden West is scheduled for release on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 on February 18, 2022.

How and why does one decide the world needs to see God of War PC gameplay? Picture the scene: it’s December, you’re aware that January is going to be cold, dark, and slow. Then you remember God of War is coming to PC, and it’s one of the best games you’ve ever played. Nice.

All told, while there is no new “content” here for returning fans, this is very much one for the PC gamers out there. The PS4 version has been updated to run better on PS5, too. But frankly, this is one of the best games on PlayStation also becoming one of the best games on PC. As with any title, if you hate the genre, it is what it is, but a mixture of storytelling, direction, graphical and audio splendour, brutal yet brilliant combat combine to make for a game that is likely only to be topped by its own sequel. Still brilliant, and a phenomenal PC port to boot.

Have a look at our God of War PC gameplay video above, where Chris Hyde and Adam Cook chat about the title, and what it means for future Sony ports. Also, the video ends up with Adam realising why PS4 ports of PS5 games aren’t going away any time soon.

God of War is coming to PC on January 14th. Check out our full 2022 release date calendar here.

GOTY 2021: Best Visuals – Returnal https://www.godisageek.com/2021/12/goty-2021-best-visuals-returnal/ Tue, 21 Dec 2021 14:00:09 +0000 https://www.godisageek.com/?p=258507 Beauty in darkness

The post GOTY 2021: Best Visuals – Returnal appeared first on GodisaGeek.com.

]]>

These days, graphics seem to take a back seat more and more when it comes to praising video games. We’ve seen what can be done with minimalist style in games like SuperHot, while 8 and 16-bit pixel art has made a massive comeback over the last few years.

And yet 2021 has been a year full of great-looking games, from Tales of Arise to Scarlet Nexus, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart and the gorgeous Kena: Bridge of Spirits. But one game in particular stood out for its use of visuals to create an oppressive, unwelcoming atmosphere that also managed to be somehow beautiful at the same time.

Housemarque’s Returnal is a dark game, one that weaves light and shadow through a world steeped in decay. Entropy has taken hold, and the planet Atropos is all but dead. From shadow-wreathed forests that stir with the passing of unseen alien stalkers, to sand-blown deserts baking under a relentless sun, or the submerged ruins of an ancient civilisation where the deep, sepulchral darkness is pierced by distant pocks of light.

GOTY 2021: Best Visuals - Returnal

But this is the studio that brought us Resogun, a stunning shooter that dazzles with its use of light and dark. And thus Returnal shatters its shadow with stark bursts of colour. Plants that glow with an eerie pale light, or leaping, chittering beasts that tear apart the gloom with bioluminescent tendrils and gleaming projectiles. It remains an excellent choice to showcase what the PS5 could do, running such insanely busy and beautiful stages at such an effortlessly smooth pace.

As a third-person bullet hell shooter, Returnal is able to fill its screen with such riots of colour and beauty that they become distracting. Death masked by spectacle. As protagonist Selene, it’s our job to pick our way through these alien hellscapes and ignore that mesmerising aesthetic. We’ve an objective to follow, and we know what horrors hide behind the swamp lights. But it’s hard to be standoffish when it all looks so damn good.

GOTY 2021: Best Visuals - Returnal

Selene’s model is detailed and believable. This isn’t your usual videogame protagonist. No exposed flesh, incongruous make-up job or wind-swept hair. She’s a middle-aged woman, singularly unremarkable in her appearance. And that’s not meant as a negative. She’s attractive, well-drawn, perhaps even beautiful – but that’s my point. Her appearance is not the focus of her character. She spends the whole time in a space suit, allowing the world around her to command our attention.

The stark contrast between the first two worlds in particular is so extreme it’s almost jarring. Games like Monster Hunter are famous for sending the player to vastly different biomes, but this isn’t the same. Because the danger in each world is just as relentless, the initial comfort you may feel of finally stepping foot outside that cloying, claustrophobic forest is replaced very quickly by a sense of agoraphobia. You want to go back in, to the tight, comparative safety of the flora.

It’s a clever move on Housemarque’s part. Give you what you think you want in that moment, only to have it be no safer, no more secure than what you’ve previously known. Returnal is able to do this because it maintains a very clear atmosphere, even when the aesthetic changes. Even under the red-tinged sky of that barren desert, the enemies and their projectiles remain vivid and distracting.

In a year of games that have either embraced an almost child-friendly style (Rift Apart, It Takes Two, Kena, Lost in Random), or stayed true to the realism that has made them successful (Call of Duty: Vanguard or Death Stranding: Director’s Cut), Returnal stands out by not only being vividly unique but also staggeringly good-looking throughout, and for that reason it’s our number one pick for Best Visuals in 2021.

Special mention goes to It Takes Two, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Scarlet Nexus, and Kena: Bridge of Spirits.

Sucker Punch has today announced that Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut will be coming to PS5 and PS4 on August 20. It was announced on the official PlayStation blog by Andrew Goldfarb, Communications Manager at Sucker Punch. Firstly, the cut will feature a brand new island to explore. Secondly, there will be PS5-specific features like DualSense haptic feedback, Japanese lip sync, and more.

Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut will come with every piece of content released so far, along with Iki Island. Jin will venture there in a brand new chapter of his story. After investigating rumours of a Mongol presence, “he finds himself caught up in events with deeply personal stakes that will force him to relive some traumatic moments from his past.” Iki Island features tons of new content, including new environments; armour, minigames; techniques; enemy types; and more.

As for the PS5-exclusive features, it’ll feature Japanese lip sync thanks to the console’s ability to render cinematics in real time. Haptic feedback and adaptive triggers will also feature, as well as enhancements to 3D audio; drastically improved load times; 4K resolution options; and a targeted framerate of 60fps. Players will be able to transfer save data from PS4 to PS5. For new players, Iki Island becomes available at the beginning of Act 2. Alongside the release of the Director’s Cut, a free update will be available with new photo mode updates, new accessibility options for controller mapping, and the option to enable a target lock-on during combat.

There will be an all new mode announced in the following weeks. For more information on pricing, special editions, and more, check out the blog here. Watch the announcement trailer below:

The post New Monster Hunter movie clip released ahead of June 18th debut appeared first on GodisaGeek.com.

With the hit gaming franchise heading to the silver screen this month, Sony Pictures UK have released a new Monster Hunter movie clip. Starring Milla Jovovich, the film will feature plenty of huge monsters and action, although I’m not sure if we should expect a bunch of Whetstones and camp fires.

“Ahead of its June 18 cinema release, Sony Pictures UK is pleased to make available a new clip for Monster Hunter, starring Milla Jovovich.

Behind our world, there is another: a world of dangerous and powerful monsters that rule their domain with deadly ferocity. When an unexpected sandstorm transports Captain Artemis (Milla Jovovich) and her unit (TI Harris, Meagan Good, Diego Boneta) to a new world, the soldiers are shocked to discover that this hostile and unknown environment is home to enormous and terrifying monsters immune to their firepower. In their desperate battle for survival, the unit encounters the mysterious Hunter (Tony Jaa), whose unique skills allow him to stay one step ahead of the powerful creatures. As Artemis and Hunter slowly build trust, she discovers that he is part of a team led by the Admiral (Ron Perlman). Facing a danger so great it could threaten to destroy their world, the brave warriors combine their unique abilities to band together for the ultimate showdown.”

With the huge success of Monster Hunter Rise this year, there couldn’t be a better time to release a movie based on the franchise. Although films based on video games don’t always work out that well, I could see a big budget action movie with huge monsters being a lot of fun.

The post New DualSense colours are on their way appeared first on GodisaGeek.com.

There aren’t many options for the innovative controllers currently, but new DualSense colours are on the way. Where its classic black or a more adventurous red you’re after, Sony has you covered.

“Since the launch of the PS5 console last November, we’ve been delighted to hear all the amazing feedback and experiences about the DualSense wireless controller from the PlayStation community.

Today, we’re thrilled to introduce two new colors that will be joining the DualSense controller lineup starting next month: Midnight Black and Cosmic Red. Midnight Black features two subtly different shades of black with light grey detailing to reflect how we view space through the night sky, and Cosmic Red offers a striking black and red design inspired by the unique vivid shades of red found throughout the cosmos.

The DualSense controller marked a radical departure from our previous controllers by delivering innovative features like haptic feedback and adaptive triggers. The features weren’t the only noticeable transformation – the bold, two-toned color choice was also a significant pivot from our previous controllers.”

There’s no date for when the new DualSense colours will be available. I’m hoping I’ll be able to snag myself a Cosmic Red one myself, but I’ll need to find a PS5 first.

Returnal packs Housemarque’s trademark action into a rogue-like | Hands-on Preview https://www.godisageek.com/2021/04/returnal-packs-housemarques-trademark-action-into-a-rogue-like-hands-on-preview/ Thu, 22 Apr 2021 08:37:01 +0000 https://www.godisageek.com/?p=249035 ResoLove.

The post Returnal packs Housemarque’s trademark action into a rogue-like | Hands-on Preview appeared first on GodisaGeek.com.

]]>

Mortality is a hard thing to live with, no pun intended. The thought that at some point everyone’s little bubble will burst is not something we like to talk or even think about on a regular basis, but it’s one of the most prevalent themes in video games where it’s often trivialised to an extent. I mean, if you could only play a game once, die, and then never ever play it again they wouldn’t be half as much fun, would they?

Like a multitude of games before it, the latest video game to not only feature death and respawns but to actively weave that theme into its very fabric is Returnal, the new third-person roguelike from Housemarque. Most famous for frantic top-down shooters like Dead Nation and Alienation, or the inimitable blaster, Resogun, Housemarque isn’t an outfit often associated with third-person action – but they will be after Returnal. Of that, I have no doubt. Having spent a few hours in its stunning, terrifying world, I can confidently say that as long as it continues the way it has started, Returnal has insane potential.

Returnal hands-on: Round and round again

Returnal follows Selene Vassos, a scout working for Astra, whose mission it is to investigate and survey distant worlds. In the intro she loses control of her ship, the Helios, and crashes on Atropos, a dark, apparently dead world littered with the remnants of an ancient civilization.

I was blown away immediately by how polished the opening few hours are. The swampy, forbidding forests of Atropos seethe with atmosphere; alien fauna sways and writhes, lighting the primordial gloom with bright smudges of bio-luminescence. At first, Selene believes she is alone – until she stumbles upon a body. Her own body, mauled and lifeless, discarded in the mud.

What follows is a deepening nightmare as you navigate the sepulchral undergrowth and crumbling ruins of this bizarre world, facing death over and over in a constant loop that sees you crash, survive, explore, die, each time growing just a little stronger and a little wiser. This is Metroid by way of Dark Souls, or perhaps the other way around, with Housemarque’s trademark panache for shooting and dodging stitched into every fibre.

Failure is a learning experience

As with many modern Roguelikes, each death is an opportunity to learn and adapt. Though it’s too early to comment on what Selene’s suite of abilities may eventually become, it isn’t long before you begin to unlock permanent upgrades to her suit that stay with you beyond each Cycle. Weapon upgrades remain, too, but weapons themselves don’t – and each time you rise again you’ll do so clutching your tiny sidearm and nothing else.

Returnal packs Housemarque's trademark shooting into a rogue-like

The Cycle itself is designed to throw you. I can’t tell if it’s procedurally generated or set on some kind of loop, but every new life presented me with a different version of Atropos. Some were wildly different, others identical save for an extra enemy here and there. But I saw collectibles and consumables – highlighted by spears of colour-coded light – up high on ledges I couldn’t hope to reach, hinting at suit upgrades yet to be unlocked.

As you fight, Selene will experience Adrenaline surges, each one (for a total of 5) increasing an intrinsic trait that makes her stronger or more capable for that particular Cycle. From a nifty reload mechanic to greater weapon proficiency, these surges are tactile, measurable indication that you’re getting better and tougher during the course of each Cycle, and as your abilities and confidence grow, so too will your range, aided by teleportation devices scattered around the ruins that can either target specific destinations of send you to the nearest linked device to aid in backtracking and exploration.

Die, fight, survive

So far I haven’t seen quite enough of Returnal’s exploratory mechanics to know for sure if the systems in place have legs to carry it, but the combat is another matter. Selene’s suit allows her to jump, dodge and sustain a few good hits, while the weaponry I’ve seen – sidearm, alien assault rifle, and a bizarre scattergun – are incredibly satisfying to use, with an alternate fire mode that does devastating damage and repeatedly makes me jump with its recharge sound effect.

Returnal preview

I will say that I’m finding the haptic feedback in the DualSense 5 a little distracting. Yes, it adds another dimension to the experience – you’ll feel the patter of rain, the shock of sustained damage, the buzz and shrill and whizz of technology in operation, and the palm-punch of gunfire, but the behaviour of the left trigger suggests that Housemarque don’t want you aiming down the sights of your weapon (fully depressing the left trigger charges your alternate fire mode), while the almost constant vibration through my hands made me put the controller down for a moment during the cutscenes between deaths.

Potential in death

At this early point, the greatest praise I’ll bestow upon Returnal is that I’m utterly enamoured. I’ve only come across a few mini-bosses so far; one was a huge tentacle beast that reminded me of the Mimics in Edge of Tomorrow (perhaps intentionally). It destroyed me in seconds and made me realise that I need to get much tougher before facing it again. But I was hooked in the first 20 minutes and the moment I turned off the PS5 I wanted to go back. At the moment, the biggest downfall is that coming out of the game resets your Cycle. If you want to stop midway you have to use the PS5’s rest function which, for many people (myself included) still causes issues with the PS5’s database.

Still, that aside, Returnal is shaping up to be an excellent addition to the PS5’s fledgling library of exclusives. It’s dark and stormy and immensely challenging, but so far it’s also satisfying, intriguing, and incredibly promising.

Returnal is a PS5 exclusive out on April 30, 2021.

GOTY 2020: Mick Fraser https://www.godisageek.com/2020/12/goty-2020-mick-fraser/ Wed, 30 Dec 2020 16:00:56 +0000 https://www.godisageek.com/?p=245201 The strength we need is all around us

The post GOTY 2020: Mick Fraser appeared first on GodisaGeek.com.

]]>

It’s hard to talk about 2020 without acknowledging just how shit it’s been. The pandemic has knocked us, collectively, for six, and has revealed a side to our nature that no one wanted to admit existed. And yet, and yet, it’s not been all bad. We’ve seen tyrants toppled and medical barriers broken, we’ve seen communities come together even when it felt like the governments in charge had lost the plot, and we’ve seen an outpouring of human emotion, good and bad, like we’ve never seen before. And through it all, one thing has sustained so many of us: games. Simply, games. As film industries struggle under unprecedented restrictions, gaming has become even more of an escape than it was before, and 2020 has been a stupendous year for new releases, not just because of the advent of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.

Rather, it’s because we’ve needed games more this year – and they haven’t let us down. I could have made a list of fifty incredible titles, maybe more, but alas that’s not the way it works. So instead, along with a handful of honourable mentions, here is my list of the ten best games of 2020.

Honourable Mentions

Ghostrunner: I went back and forth a lot while playing Ghostrunner, but not ever becasue of the quality of the game itself. Rather, I just found it harder than a tin of titanium bastards. I’ve since watched people speedrun it in half an hour when it took me 14, which is humbling. But I love it. It’s gorgeous, fast, impeccably designed, and doesn’t throw false challenge at you with forced rogue-like mechanics.

Star Wars: Squadrons: It has been a fairly good year for Star Wars, all things considered. The second season of The Mandalorian has done incredibly well, and a few strong VR offerings have reminded us how fun this universe can be to play games in. But Squadrons is different – for one, it’s a combat flight sim, and a damn good one at that. It tells a solid story, but also happens to be an incredibly playable and well-made game. And the VR contingent is absolutely fantastic.

Crusader Kings III: Most people I know probably won’t have even played Crusader Kings III. It’s certainly niche, and one exclusively for the thinkers and planners, the methodical ones. Which makes it even stranger that I clicked with it so quickly. I’m anything but armchair smart, and I have the patience of a hyperactive budgie in a grain silo, but I fell in love with the scheming and skullduggery of Crusader Kings III.

Wasteland 3: This one almost, almost made the top ten. Wasteland 3 is an astoundingly good game, with an incredible sense of humour, deep mechanics and a world that begs to be explored. Mixing RPG and turn-based strategy to maximum effect, it’s one of the year’s big surprises for me.

Nioh 2: Team Ninja’s sequel takes the deep combat systems of its predecessor and adds a strong loot game and some fantastic RPG elements – but more than that, it tells a coherent, sometimes touching story at the same time. An utterly mesmerising action game.

10. Gears Tactics

I wasn’t expecting a lot from Gears Tactics, I’ll be honest. The franchise isn’t particularly well known for its deep strategy, often asking for little more than the calculations required to chainsaw an enemy clean in half. And yet The Coalition pulled a blinder with Gears Tactics. In a year filled to the brim with tactical turn-based strategy games (seriously, count the damn things), it presented what amounts to a full on Gears of War game from a top-down perspective. It’s so fast-paced the turn system barely bothers you, and it captures every ounce of atmosphere from the aesthetic to the music to the balls-out action of it all. Deep customisation, interesting skill trees for each class, and varied, meaty missions come together to produce one of the year’s most enjoyable shooters.

9. Desperados III

Desperados III is just excellent. I could leave it at that, to be honest, a succinct enough explanation as to why I love MiMiMi’s tactical western shooter. Almost unique (there a few similar titles, such as the developer’s own Shadow Tactics and Commandos, and the recent Partisans 1941), it presents each mission as a puzzle with multiple solutions. It features an array of colourful, interesting characters, each with abilties so unique to themselves that they genuinely change the way you look at each mission, and a selection of vast, intricate sandboxes in which to wreak mayhem as John Cooper and his band of vigilantes. There are few more satisfying tactical games, and the inclusion of the replay cam at the end of each level that shows all your deaths, kills, pick-ups, saves and loads is a masterstroke. As challenging or as easy going as you want it to be, Desperados III deserves to be played by any fan of tactical shooters, the Old West or solving problems with your six-shooters.

8. Assassin’s Creed Valhalla

Ubisoft have had one of their best and worst years in 2020. Beset by accusations that have seen their organisation shaken to the highest levels, they have a long road to walk before they can fully win back the public trust – if it’s possible at all. And yet, they’ve also managed to put out some of the year’s most enjoyable games – a feat that should be credited to the development teams, rather than the suits who run the show. And you can’t disparage a lot of the work they’ve done with titles like Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. Further evidence, if indeed it was required, that the old Creed is dead, Valhalla follows the open-world RPG route of Origins and Odyssey, but changes the way it handles fundemental elements like the loot system and the side-quests. Yes, it’s still a busy checklist of a map, but it’s filled with points of interest now, places you’ll want to explore, secrets you’ll want to find. It has its share of Ubisoft Jank, but it’s also charming, gorgeous and, crucially, compelling.

7. Hades

After a long stint in early access, Hades finally celebrated its full release this year on PC and, surprisingly, Nintendo Switch – and the world fell in love. Many had played it on PC (including myself), and watched it grow and evolve, but it found favour with the newcomers who had never dipped a toe in its glorious waters thanks to the percieved dangers of early access. A rogue-like that feels challenging but not punishing, Hades is the story of Zagreus, son of the titular Lord of the Underworld, who dreams of escaping Hell and joining his family on Mount Olympus. But Hades’ greatest strengths may not even lie in its stellar combat, but rather in the way it weaves its story even through your many failed runs, opening new conversations and dialogue options, revealing new secrets with every death that make you feel rewarded simply for playing, whether you succeed or not. This coupled with the perfectly paced character progression and, yes, that stellar combat I mentioned, make it one of the best games of 2020, and one of the Switch’s absolute must-plays.

6. Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales

Far more than just an addition to 2018’s incredible Marvel’s Spider-Man, the more compact and focused Miles Morales tells a great story of its own while giving its new lead time to shine ahead of the full-blooded sequel we know is on the cards. Miles himself is an endearing and lovable main character, and while the small cast of villains is hardly the strongest ever assembled, it once again changes up the story to surprise fans of both the comic universe and the MCU to produce something that feels like its own entity. And the power of the PS5 delivers some gorgeous visuals, with some of the finest detail I’ve seen in a game world. Absolutely wonderful.

5. Final Fantasy VII Remake

There was a moment early on when playing Final Fantasy VII Remake that I had to stop and just appreciate the fact that I was finally experiencing it – that I was finally going to return to Midgar, to the oversized boots and silly hair of Cloud Strife, the star of perhaps my favourite game of all time. My love for FFVII is such that I won’t even replay it: I don’t want my natural aversion to retro games to sour my strongest gaming memories – which was what I was afraid of when playing the Remake. That somehow Square Enix would mess it up, pour murky pondwater over my rose-tinted glasses and somehow lessen my love for the original with all their swanky new features, but if anything it made me appreciate those memories more.

Final Fantasy VII Remake is an exceptionally good video game, one that consistently surprised and moved me even though I was always sure I knew where the story was going. It takes a great deal from its source of course, but adds enough to it that not only does the original remain reverent and unsullied, but the Remake feels like its own entity. If there’s a complaint, it’s that some of story and the side content feels a little like filler – but that’s a minor gripe next to the improved writing, character development, dizzying combat and staggering visuals. An absolute treat for fans and newcomers alike.

4. Cyberpunk 2077

Arguably 2020’s most controversial game, Cyberpunk 2077 is nevertheless the game I’ve had the most overall fun with this year. Lucky enough to be able to play on a decent PC, I haven’t experienced many of the more game-breaking bugs others have seen. Beyond occasional visual glitches and texture pop, I’ve had a mostly untarnished experience – and as such, I became utterly, completely immersed in Night City.

I found a game that let me play how I wanted to play, that gave me multiple options to tackle objectives how I saw fit, and introduced me to a stunningly beautiful yet knowingly grim vision of the future. The writing repeatedly impressed me, and the main characters felt real to me, the detail in the environments and the character work making me care about the world and its people – and the way it handles the story and side quests, weaving them in and out of one another, is fantastic. And as for Keanu Reeves’ turn as the hard-worn Johnny Silverhand, former rock star turned cyber ghost trapped in your protagonist’s head – well, I loved every minute of my time with him.

3. Demon’s Souls

Wow. That was the first thing I said as the Demon’s Souls remake began. It was the first game I played on the day my PlayStation 5 arrived, and what a way to welcome in the new generation. Bluepoint Games have done an incredible job, recapturing everything – everything – that made the original a cult classic, but making it feel more accessible, more playable, and more hauntingly beautiful than ever before. The use of light and sound to tell stories through the environment is possibly unmatched, its grim world dripping with an atmosphere that feels hopeless, dangerous, insurmountable – and still managing, somehow, to issue a challenge it’s impossible to ignore.

There were moments while playing through it that I was transported back to the 2009 original, remembering how I felt trying to get through it then, before the “Soulslike” was even a thing, before there were speedruns and boss guides all over the internet, when it was entirely unknown and simply pushing through it was reward enough. Never has there been a remake so complete and yet so respectful of what made the original so beloved.

2. Immortals Fenyx Rising

If you had told me last year that this game was going to make my GOTY list, I’d have laughed you out of the room. For what it’s worth, I don’t dislike the title – it’s no more generic than Gods & Monsters would have been, and in fact is more indicative of what this game is. Because it’s the story of Fenyx, a lovable protagonist helping Greece’s ancient Pantheon regain their power in a world that borrows heavily from Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. And when I say “borrows heavily from” I mean outright copies at times.

There are elements that are almost brazen, but at the same time Fenyx brings quality of life improvements to the formula made possible by the benefit of hindsight. And it tells what feels like a more cohesive story, filled with genuine humour as well as high advenure. And my god, it’s the first Ubisoft game I’ve played in years that feels not just polished but impeccably free of the usual jank that plagues their games. Immortals Fenyx Rising is a beautiful, charming epic.

1. Ghost of Tsushima

To say I’ve been captivated by Ghost of Tsushima would be a gross understatement. I’ve been enthralled by it for months. Even having to walk away from it to review so many other titles since its summer release, I’ve always returned to its staggering world. Jin Sakai may not be the most compelling protagonist of the year, but his journey from loyal, honour-bound Samurai to hard-bitten guerilla warrior is an incredible tale. At times I simply got lost in the world, and the truth is that the story takes just a little too long to grip – but when it does, it doesn’t let up. By the final hours, everything I had done, everyone I had helped, every life I had saved, came together to produce a thrilling final third that had me close to tears as the credits rolled.

But more than this, Ghost of Tsushima takes risks that shouldn’t pay off but do. The lack of a lock-on button in combat forces you to be aware of the enemies encircling you, and spreading so may collectibles across its map leads you to see every inch of it, and soak up its breathtaking splendour. An immersive, deep and rich open world combine with the year’s best combat system and some of the most consistently polished gameplay I’ve seen to produce the best game of 2020. Well done, Sucker Punch, you deserve it.

2020, a year that we will never forget. I’m not exaggerating when I say that it was easily one of the most challenging years of my life, but I am very certain that many would echo that statement. Video games have always been there for us, but we really needed their help this year.

We have had some seriously big hitters, too. Many have spent countless hours checking turnip prices, others have faced warriors in intense standoffs; jaw’s have dropped at the loss of a very important character. Then to top it all off, the next generation of video game hardware arrived. If I was to add it to my list, the overall escapism in video games for 2020 would be my number 1.

The magic of video games I will forever love, and I am so grateful for their existence. Without further ado, here are my favourite games of 2020.

Honorable Mentions

Hades: I have played many roguelike games, and just when I thought that I’d seen it all within the genre, along comes Hades. This is easily Supergiant Games at their best. It is insanely addictive, incredibly written, and visually stunning. Get on this ASAP.

Spiritfarer: This really took me by surprise. I knew nothing about this title when it was announced for Switch, and I was so glad that I went in blind. The story pulls massively on the heartstrings and tackles a theme that every single one of us has to face. If Spiritfarer looks like a game that draws you in by its visuals, then just go for it. The less you know, the better.

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2: Simply put, they didn’t fuck it up. It plays perfectly, it’s still so addictive, looks excellent, and even though I am not a fan of the newly added music tracks, I am so delighted that they also kept the original soundtrack. THUG next, please.

Paper Mario: The Origami King: Probably the funniest Mario game that I have ever played. The dialogue at times is downright genius, and it’s no surprise really, but this game looks outrageously good. The real downside unfortunately are the repetitive and unrewarding moments of combat – but this is still such a great Paper Mario game and a must for Switch owners.

Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales: It is more of that incredible Spidey action from Insomniac, but even more polished. Miles is a brilliant character and that alone is a testament to Insomniac’s development. If I played as Batman and it wasn’t Bruce Wayne, that would not work for me. But here we have Peter Parker out of the picture, and it just works. Insomniac Games know exactly what they are doing with Spider-Man and all I want is more of it.

5. Resident Evil 3

It’s not that I wasn’t up for Resi 3, but with the year that it was becoming there was something in the back of my mind that made me wonder if I was really up for a game such as Resident Evil at that current time. I am so glad that I went for it. I actually preferred this remake to 2. The pacing is incredible, Nemesis is pissed and I loved every encounter with him, which then delivered very memorable boss fights. 3 is a far more action-packed entry than even the original is.

4. Astro’s Playroom

Like, holy smokes. Astro is the new mascot king of PlayStation in my opinion. The fact that this is free with the PS5 is bananas. I would straight up buy a physical edition of this game if it was available. The love, humor, and overall celebration of PlayStation within this game is a full-on triumph. If I was to discuss my favourite moments of the year, Astro contained one that made my jaw drop. Pure joy.

3. Final Fantasy VII Remake

Was I nervous about how a remake of one of my favourite games of all-time would turn out? Absolutely. Did those nerves elevate even more when I heard that the remake would be split into episodes? Absolutely. Were those nerves kicked straight up the arse once I took control of Cloud, and met the entire gang? ABSOLUTELY! The FF7 remake was amazing from start to finish. I put in 80 hours, and all I want is more. The level of polish is tremendous, the musical score is my favourite of the year, and they took the combat of FFXV and made it so much better. Give me Part 2 right now.

2. Yakuza: Like a Dragon

This happened because of the love it received from the other members of the GIAG crew on this year’s GOTY deliberations. I immediately purchased it and from the second it started, I fully fell in love with everything that was going on. It is hilarious, bonkers, visually amazing, a great story, and best of all features an amazing protagonist by the name of Ichiban Kasuga. Like a Dragon is magic, it has done so much for me that I absolutely did not expect to happen. Just like Shadow of War, I just really wish that I had played it before our GOTY recordings. I can’t say enough good things about this game, and I think that is finally time to dive headfirst into the entire Yakuza series.

1.The Last of Us Part II

Probably the most controversial game of 2020, for all the wrong reasons if I’m honest, but that is a different conversation. TLOU II is one of the greatest games that I have ever played in my entire life. It left such an impact on me when the credits rolled that I just knew nothing would beat it for me, it immediately became my GOTY. I understand and respect how some people were left disappointed with how the story turned out, but I am totally not within that camp. Some say that it was too bleak and depressing, but what did you expect? That is what this story is, it needed to be brutal, it needed to be intense, it needed to take risks. There is no hope, just survival. I will never forget how I felt throughout moments of this game. Thank you, Naughty Dog.

Game Share has been a prominent feature in Sony consoles and is back on PS5 too. But as the UI looks a little different on Sony’s new console, we thought we’d give you a step-by-step guide on how to do it:

 1. Log in to your PSN account
 2. On the main hub screen, you’ll first need to access Settings which is the Cog icon. To access it, go to the top of the hub screen, and then right and you should see the cog icon in between a search icon and your avatar. Click on that.
 3. In the Settings menu scroll down to Users and Accounts
 4. Then you’ll need to scroll down to Other
 5. Now click on Console Sharing and Offline Play

In Console Sharing and Offline Play, you’ll now effectively need to make your console your home console. So now on your PS5, you would need to click the Disable option. Then, a friend can log in as you on their PS5, and they would then click Don’t Disable (a long way of saying Enable). They could then log out and log in with their own PSN and play your games on their PS5.

If you’re in any doubt, here’s a video showing you how to Game Share on PS5 too:

If you missed the Sony Showcase yesterday then you missed the news that details on the brand new PS5 have now been made available including release date and price.

The PlayStation 5 will launch on 12 November in seven key markets: the US, Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and South Korea. If you are in Europe, Middle East, South America, Asia and South Africa you will have to wait a week until 19 November for the console to release.

PlayStation 5 features two different models. The PS5 Digital Edition will release for a recommended retail price of £359.99 and PS5 with an Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive will be release for $449.99. Pre-orders are live now at select retailers.

We can’t wait for our fans to experience for themselves the incredible speed, the heightened immersion and the breathtaking games on PS5 when we launch this November.”

Singer-songwriters Emily Burns and Dan Caplen have released two unique versions of the viral hit song ‘Through the Valley,’ featured in the reveal trailer for The Last of Us Part II. It quickly became a huge success, reaching number one on Spotify’s viral chart and being covered by various fans the world over.

Both artists have given the song a very different feel, with both Burns and Caplen using their own style to make the song unique. Emily Burns is a rising pop talent, whilst Dan Caplen’s roots are in R&B and Soul (previosuly working with Macklemore and Rudimental), and both versions feel fresh, still retaining the poignancy of the original.

“I was really excited to be approached by PlayStation for my take on ‘Through the Valley’ to celebrate the launch of The Last of Us Part II,” said Emily. “I loved the song as soon as I heard it and immediately picked up my guitar and started working on my own way of singing it. I knew I could make it my own by layering my voice to create a kind of pad of vocal harmonies. It was really fun to experiment!”

“I’ve been playing the cello since I was six years old and I’ve been recording covers during lockdown to share with my fans. So it was the natural fit to rework ‘Through The Valley’ to be played on a cello,” said Dan. “I’ve seen how much the song has resonated with fans of The Last of Us and all the great covers people have been posting already. So I hope my version can do all of them justice. It’s been a really fun project to be a part of!”

The Last of Us Part II has been out for just under a week, and already it’s been a huge success. ‘Through the Valley’ fits the tone of the game perfectly, and both cover versions make the song even more special than it already is. If you’d like to hear them, you can check out both of them below:

With The Last of Us Part II only 9 days away at the time of writing, anticipation for the next installment in the Naughty Dog franchise is high. Many people I know have eagerly replayed the original in preparation, and I personally am ready to get my hands on the sequel ASAP.

It’s not an easy thing to do, really. How do you follow up a game that was adorned with ten out of ten scores, yet also almost universally considered to be a game that didn’t need a follow up. Indeed, previewing a game like The Last of Us Part II, that has this level of hype around it and comes from a developer that has delivered stories that are memorable and, frankly, rife for spoiling, isn’t easy either. In that respect, you won’t be hearing anything about the story of The Last of Us Part II here aside to say that this specific section of the game we can talk about as of now, is from around the middle of the game and focuses on Ellie’s journey to a Hospital in search of someone. If that sounds vague, good, because from here on we’re only talking about the combat.

Looking back on that first game, however, one thing that springs to mind is that, while I loved it, others found the story interesting but the gameplay less than stellar. While this two hour section of the game isn’t going to change non-believers to those that worship at the altar of Naughty Dog, it’s definitely a major step forward in a lot of ways.

Most crucially, the AI is so much better. In fact, even based on this small slice, it’s better than any Naughty Dog AI before it. The human combatants are no longer faceless goons, and if you put a shotgun slug into someone’s belly, they fall clenching their chest, screaming in pain before a death rattle gurgles to its gory conclusion. Then the shouting begins. If you’ve broken stealth in favour of loud combat, or just because you messed up, your victim’s death will be noticed and his or her friend will scream “Oh God, no, not Dave!”. This feels organic and as though these characters lived before you met them, contributing to the oppressive darkness that begs the question of who the bad guys even are in this adventure.

A screenshot from The Last of Us Part II (Preview)

But these enemies aren’t idiots, either. They will work as a team and flank you – quickly, I might add. Using the returning “Listen” mode that allows you to hunker down and hear enemies through walls or around corners, you may be trying to plot their course and before you know it the one you were tracking seems less important because another is bearing down on you, gun out, and BOOM, you’re on your back. You can choose to fire back from a knocked-down prone position, but you can also get up quickly, then run and hide, trying to regain stealth. Options are key to the combat in The Last of Us Part II.

Options like stealth, for example. It’s not a stretch to see Ellie in a different light as she, or you (the lines blur) sneak around the grass, in and out of cover, hiding in broken down buildings that offer darkness to ensconce yourself from sight. Then you grab someone, dragging them as their desperate muffled voice tries to scream, and then you shank them: neck slit, then chest stabbed. Early impressions are that these human enemies don’t have obvious set patterns. They are numerous, but they seem organised, like they are told “don’t be an AI routine, don’t make it easy for them to shank you!”, and they absolutely got the memo.

Ellie stealth in the grass from The Last of Us Part II

And boy, that’s just the humans, and just some of the options. I’ve not mentioned how throwing a glass bottle or brick (they return, obviously) at an enemy stuns them, or how if you do this while equipping a melee weapon there are unique kills that are brutal like I’ve never seen in a game. But like in The Last of Us, the true brilliance of the combat is in the encounters with the infected. Clickers scream into the darkness, while runners shuffle like zombies only somehow more feral. I’m not going to even risk spoiling anything at this stage, but while humans have guns, the fear a clicker instills is next-level. In the moments where I met a Clicker, The Last of Us: Part II felt like a horror game. Escaping with my life felt like an achievement and seeing the light after a scuffle with the infected felt like a reward, and not just because Naughty Dog has designed such a realistic, incredibly detailed world.

It’s helped in large part because the sound design is out of this world. The accompanying music is sensational, and if this brief section is anything to go by it’s possible Gustavo Santaolalla has bettered his work from the first game. But the audio design is beefy and hard. The thump of bat on bone is enough to make you wince, and the sound of gunfire pierces the desolation of the old world. Just from this small snippet of game, the audio is tantalising, offering glimpses of what might be coming.

But back to the stealth, though. As Ellie holds her grabbed foes, knife thrusting into them, her face contorts in a way I’ve never seen a videogame character before. It’s desperation and hatred, it’s that feeling of having a nightmare and wanting to scream but no sound is coming out. I was warned that this game could get dark, and in the short slice of it I can share with you right now, all I can really say is that, yes, it will get dark – but I am ready to face the darkness.

]]>

Today, Naughty Dog has released a video showcasing gameplay in The Last of Us Part II, and how the new mechanics play a part in the game. In the video, Neil Druckmann and Co discuss how survival will play a much bigger role, and even though Ellie maybe small, she can use her nimbleness to reach areas Joel can’t. Dodging, jumping, and lying prone are also a big part of The Last of Us Part II, and the AI seems to have improved dramatically.

Perhaps the biggest revelation is the fact that the game is “open-ended,” and that you may miss story beats and entire sections if you don’t explore everything. This is a big deal considering all prior Naughty Dog games have been linear. Time will tell how the overall game uses these new mechanics and features, but if the below video is anything to go by, The Last of Us Part II is going to be incredible.

Sony has announced today that it’s offering two free games (well, technically it’s four) as part of its new Play At Home initiative. Aimed at helping people stay home during the Covid-19 pandemic, these games don’t require a subscription, they’re free to keep as long as you redeem them.

Between Thursday, April 16th and Wednesday, May 6th, Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection and Journey will be free to claim. Yours to keep. Just be aware that downloads may take a little longer than usual.

On top of that, Sony is also helping out its independent development partners in this difficult time. Sony says:

Independent developers are vital to the heart and soul of the gaming community and we understand the hardships and financial struggles that many smaller gaming studios are facing. With that, SIE has developed a fund to support them during this time. We have earmarked $10 million to support our independent development partners. More information about the fund, including participation criteria, will be made available soon.

The post Predator: Hunting Grounds is gory, imperfect, but lots of fun appeared first on GodisaGeek.com.

]]>

By all accounts, the iconic Predator should be the perfect videogame protagonist or antagonist. One of the greatest movie “monsters” ever created, the highly intelligent, highly honourable alien hunter even comes equipped with a full arsenal of weaponry you can’t see until it pulls it out like it has its own built-in weapon wheel. It has heat vision, cloaking, agility, speed and strength. It’s perfect.

Which begs the question of why developers have struggled over the years to do the Yautja justice in a video game. The closest one has ever come to being “good” was 2010’s Aliens vs Predator, but even that failed to really nail the hunter’s sense of raw power. Stick around, and I’ll tell you why Predator: Hunting Grounds might be the first game to get most, if not all, of the elements in place.

The concept is a little like 2015’s Evolve, in that one player takes control of the Predator and the other four play the rough and tumble special forces commandos dropped into the meat grinder. As you can imagine, the two modes are very, very different. Playing as the soldiers is like a traditional FPS. You’ll arrive in the jungle with a small list of objectives such as retrieving stolen goods or testing a contaminated water supply, and as long as you’re quiet and efficient, you should get at least part way into the second objective before a certain fifth party arrives on the scene.

Predator Hunting Grounds screenshot 001

There are AI enemies to fend off, and as you level up you’ll unlock better weapons and mods to create custom loadouts. The overall goal here is pretty simple: complete the objectives and get to the chopper. The AI isn’t all that smart, and you can use stealth or all-out war to get the job done. But the louder you are, the quicker the Predator will find you.

Playing as the Yautja is initially incredibly gratifying. IllFonic have done a solid job capturing how it moves, the pull of his body weight as he scales trees and leaps impossible distances, and there’s no doubt that what you’re in control of ain’t no man. Switching to heat vision has that iconic sound effect you’ve heard in every one of the films, and the ominous click is ever present. But it’s a sense of power that instills you with overconfidence, and that’s where the problems start.

Because you should be overpowered as the Predator. You should feel vastly superior to the squishy meatbags on the ground. And stalking your prey is fantastic, clinging to the trees and using your vision to pick up distant signatures of heat and conflict. If you can get the drop on the fireteam, you can take at least one or two out before they have a chance to respond, or maybe skin a few AI alive and hang them from the trees as a warning. The problem here is that the fireteam know you’re coming.

Predator Hunting Grounds screenshot 002

The Predator in Hunting Grounds is not able to get ahead of the fireteam and set traps, and the camouflage cloak is less effective when the other players are looking for it and not mistaking it for a heat haze or trick of the eyes. A coordinated team using spotters and communicating as incredibly hard to take apart, especially as the Predator is so damn squishy. It definitely bleeds, and they can definitely kill it.

Using the plasma caster requires the target to either be on a direct trajectory from your position or standing still, so of course human players don’t move like AI, and instead zigzag around like headless chickens. Sustained gunfire wrecks your health bar and messwa with your vision, and using cloak while already being tracked is useless. The fireteam can also cover themselves with mud to block heat signatures for a while, which is a weird option when they’re not supposed to know they’re being hunted by body heat.

You can unlock various weapons and tools from the movies such as the net launcher and retractable spear, but the same issues persist. Getting close enough to the fireteam to make any real use of these items is incredibly hard. It’s often easier to stay hidden until the last few minutes when they’re heading to the extraction point, where there’s limited cover and they have to wait for the helo. At this point it’s like a shooting gallery, albeit one where the ducks are strafing like crazy and shooting back.

I actually had more fun as a soldier than as the Predator. Its incredibly tense having to watch the trees while trying to focus on your mission, patching yourself up as quickly as possible when injured because the mission clock and the threat of the Predator mean you ain’t got time to bleed in the mud. You’re constantly moving, seeking cover, always aware of where your team is. And when the Predator finally makes its entrance, its usually loud and frantic and scored by explosions and horrified screams. During the beta, I encountered few players who really knew what they were doing, but going up against a player who knows exactly how to control the Predator could be exceptionally good.

Elsewhere it’s business as usual for an online multiplayer game. There are dozens of weapons and mods to unlock by leveling up, and even more cosmetics to buy with in-game credits or find in Field Lockers (or loot boxes, to you and me). The beta was very generous with these boxes and the currency to unlock them, but given the speed with which I was earning cosmetics I highly doubt this system won’t be heavily yanked in the other direction.

Speaking from experience I’d say there’s not enough time between now and the projected April 24 release date to fix the issues with the build. The frame rate struggles a lot, and the physics and AI are both lacking polish. The environments, while predictably all stretches of jungle, are dense and detailed, with a wonderful verticality that allows the Predator to survey for miles around.

There’s no doubt that considerable effort has been put into the development of Predator: Hunting Grounds, but it does feel imbalanced. Regardless, as with Evolve, I can see this developing a strong core player base who’ll learn every trick and tactic. It’s an exciting, tense experience as the fireteam, though slightly underwhelming as the Predator until you’ve mastered the art of making trophies of men.

Still, many will come just for the atmosphere. The iconic score and the unmistakable ambience are on point, and for some that will be enough to bring them in, if not to keep them invested.

Sony Interactive Entertainment have announced a few stats for December 2019. Last month the total number of active users reached the heights 103 million. Showing that a lot of PS4 players had a decent amount of time off over the holidays.

On top of that, Sony Interactive Entertainment also announced that the PS4 console has reached sales of 106 million globally. PS4 software title sales from retailers took that one step further by reaching 1.15 billion. That’s a lot of content flying off the shelves.

“I am very pleased to see that so many PlayStation fans value the unparalleled entertainment experience on PS4,” said Jim Ryan, President and CEO of SIE. “This has been made possible by the support we have from our partners and fans since launching PlayStation in 1994, and I would like to truly thank everyone. We’ve consistently delivered innovative products like PlayStation VR, which has reached its 5 million unit sales milestone. There is much more entertainment experience to look forward to that the PlayStation ecosystem will provide that we can’t wait to share with our fans.”

During Sony’s CES 2020 press conference, the PlayStation 5 logo was revealed by Jim Ryan. Whilst it doesn’t come as a major surprise, the logo follows in similar footsteps to PlayStation’s last three console logos, with a similar font and style.

It wasn’t the PS5 news fans were hoping for, but the conference was a chance to share some cool information on PlayStation’s sales performance over recent years. As well as revealing the logo, Sony also announced that it has sold 5 million VR headsets since it launched all the way back in October 2016, and 104 million PS4 consoles since it released in 2014.

There’s one more State of Play left of the year and it’s happening next week. Sony have confirmed the December State of Play will commence on December 10 from 6am PT. Or 2pm GMT for any UK viewers.

It’s scheduled to last for at least 20 minutes with the promise of news, game reveals and updates.

Could this be the one that shows off some Resident Evil 3 remake footage? I’ll be keeping my fingers crossed for that at least.

Naughty Dog has confirmed via the Playstation Blog that The Last of Us Part II has been delayed until May 29, 2020. Despite having a full launch blowout just a month ago, the developers have revealed they need more time to complete the sequel. Neil Druckman, Creative Director at Naughty Dog had this to say on the reasons for the delay:

During the last few weeks, as we were closing out sections of the game, we realised we simply didn’t have enough time to bring the entire game up to a level of polish we would call Naughty Dog quality. At this point we were faced with two options: compromise parts of the game or get more time. We went with the latter, and this new release date allows us to finish everything to our level of satisfaction while also reducing stress on the team.

While we’re relieved that we won’t have to compromise our vision, we’re disappointed that we weren’t able to avoid this exact situation. We wish we could’ve foreseen the amount of polish we needed, but the size and scope of this game got the better of us. We hate disappointing our fans and for that we’re sorry.

We hope you understand that this additional time ensures that The Last of Us Part II lives up to our collective ambition as well as our commitment to the highest level of quality.

Whilst there’s always a tinge of sadness when a highly anticipated game is delayed, the reasons here are all the right ones. And we’ll all appreciate the game more with all its polish come May. Furthermore, reducing the stress on the development team to manageable levels should always be a priority.

To tide you over until then, check out the trailer from last month below:

As usual it’s a packed podcast thanks to yet more indies hitting the shelves (digital or otherwise). We’ve got more on Indivisible, plenty on 2019’s Grid, and a little known title based on a very popular movie series called John Wick Hex. Doom Eternal has been delayed, too, and the PlayStation 5 has been properly announced, so there’s almost certainly going to be some frowning faces this week. On top of that, Adam Carroll has been playing the Mega Drive mini.

Listener correspondence sees us talking about strange misunderstandings, game versions of people, horrible game names, and obscure or unknown titles. Hit us up every week with new daft questions (and serious ones, too) and we’ll answer them! Seriously, maybe you want to know more about Adam Cook’s heart attack that he never talks about, or what the team’s best gaming achievement is? You can’t un-ask these things! You can ping us across all social media platforms – seriously, ask, we won’t bite!

Sony have revealed more colours are on the way for the DS4 controllers. With the upcoming inclusion of Electric Purple, Red Camouflage, Titanium Blue and Rose Gold there are now over 25 colours to choose from.

Your favourite colour will likely be covered now. Unless your favourite happens to be Pantone 448 C, also referred to as the ugliest colour in the world, in which case you’re probably out of luck.

Each new controller will be available to buy from September this year.

In addition Sony are also releasing a Rose Gold Edition headset. This wireless headset comes with all the same features as the gold edition except this one is rose gold. The Rose Gold Edition headset will available from November this year.

If pictures aren’t enough then you’re in luck! Sony have put together a couple of trailers that you can find right here.
